A Message From Our Pastor.

Dear Friends,

Every now and again I run into a young Catholic (in name at least) couple who tell me that they aren’t going to have their children baptized because they think it is a decision that should be left up to the child. I ask if their child likes to have shots at the doctor’s office. They always say No. So I ask, “Why don’t you let them decide if they want to vaccinated against disease when they are old enough to make up their own minds?”

They always say, “It’s too important. What if they got something that was preventable because I didn’t have them vaccinated? I’d feel terrible.” In other words, all their talk about the child’s freedom to decide is not and has never been the point. The point is, that to the parents, baptism really isn’t that important. And they get that message across to their children in subtle ways. Then, when the child has the freedom to choose, the practice of the faith – going to Mass, receiving the sacraments, attending religious education – seems to them to be just stealing time away from more fun things like football or ballet. If my parents didn’t think it was important, why should I?

The newly elected President of France, Emmanuel Macron, was raised in a totally non-religious family. When he was 12, he decided to be baptized, but that is rare. Most of the time, the continuity is lost, the thread of faith, which goes back for more than a thousand years, is cut off, withers and dies.

Jesus says the gift of faith is like a pearl of great price. If we know the value of the pearl, we will do anything to acquire it. Similarly, we claim the gift of faith, but do we really know and appreciate its value? Are we willing to make sacrifices to make sure the pearl of faith is not lost in our own family?

I have my great-grandfather’s pocket watch. Although I wasn’t born when my great-grandfather died so I never knew him, he is an important part of who I am. I have a picture of him in a three-piece suit, with the chain of the pocket watch across his wide vest, standing at the family farm in St.-Felix-de-Kingsey. I see the cows standing behind him and the barn over to the side. He had made his fortune as a stone carver in the United States, but he wasn’t ashamed to remember where he came from. He was proud to go back to Canada, to the farm, to his origins. I can’t tell if the cows are Holstein or Jersey or something else. I’m no dairy farmer, but I like to think I look more and more like him as I grow older and that maybe I have some of his good qualities, which my father always talked about.

The watch is a Waltham watch and recently I had it totally refurbished because I was told it is getting harder and harder to find the original parts for that type of wind-up watch. I want it to last as long as it can, to pass it on to my nephew and to succeeding generations.

I treasure the watch, but I treasure even more the gift of faith which was given to me by my ances-tors. That is truly the pearl of great price. What is the pearl of great price in your life? What are you willing to do to pass it on to the next generation?

May God bless you all, Father Bob Bruso

ADORATION OF JESUS IN THE BLESSED SACRAMENT

Adoration, silent prayer before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, has always been an integral part of Catholic spirituality. It requires noting more than faith in the Real Presence of Jesus under the forms of bread and wine, which we receive at Mass. That faith carries over to our reverence for the Sacred Elements reposing in the Tabernacle. We share in Jesus’ presence not only when we receive the Eucharist, but anytime we are in the presence of the consecrated Host.

We began Eucharistic Adoration in honor of the Year of Mercy and continued until recently. Espe-cially during Lent, we had many people coming on a regular basis, but it declined after Easter, so we decided to take some time to reconsider.

We were having Adoration 4:30-5:30 on Wednesdays. Is that a good time? What we’d like to know is: if you think you’d be interested in taking a few quiet moments of Eucharistic Adoration every week, when would be the best time for you? Let us know by calling the rectory or speaking to Father Asante or Father Bob after Mass.

The great Cure of Ars, St. Jean Vianney, saw an old man sitting in quiet contemplation before the Tabernacle one day. He asked him what he was doing during his time of prayer. He said, “I look at Jesus and He looks at me.” It is that simple, pure faith which is the heart of Eucharistic Adoration.

*Is interested in being baptized, making First Communion who has never celebrated these Sacraments?

*Has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic? *Was baptized Catholic as a child, but has not celebrated the

Sacraments of Eucharist & Confirmation? *Has a child over the age of seven who has not been baptized?

We offer an opportunity to come together in a small group to learn more about our faith. Sessions focus on the teachings and experience of Church and prepare individuals to celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation during the Easter season. There are separate sessions for children or youth. You are welcome to participate in the RCIA process with your questions, insights, and your faith story in a warm accepting setting. Please contact the rectory at 978-537-6541 and leave your name and phone number and Mrs. Patricia Secino, Director of RCIA will contact you.

Every Year, Saint Cecilia's Parish has provided a program by which persons who were not confirmed can celebrate this Sacrament. Some of these persons are confirmed in the parish Confirmation, others take part in the adult Confirmation ceremonies that are scheduled each year at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Worcester.

Adults 18 years of age or older who are baptized and have made First Communion, but have not been confirmed are invited to take part in a special course leading to Confirmation. If you or someone you know has not been confirmed and would like to be confirmed, please call Patricia Secino at the rectory 978-537-6541.

Dear Father Bruso,

I am very grateful to the parishioners of St. Cecilia Parish for exceeding their goal in the 2017 Annual Partners in Charity Appeal. Please be assured of my appreciation.

While I am confident that you had the able assistance of parish volunteers who worked with you, I am also well aware that you worked hard to inspire them. The pastor’s role is vital in achieving such a success.

I have enclosed a letter to your parishioners in which I have expressed my gratitude to them. It is my hope that you will reproduce the letter and insert it into the parish bulletins.

The Diocese remains $140,000 from its goal and some of your parishioners may not as yet have made a gift to the appeal. Your encouragement and prayers for our campaign continue to be essential. In a special way it is my hope that you will pray that St. Teresa, our patroness this year, will continue to bless our efforts. With every prayerful best wish, I remain

Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester July 20, 2017

Believe it or not it's..."Back to School" time!

Once again Catholic Charities and St. Vincent de Paul are working together to bring much needed school supplies to children. Last year’s response was amazing and because of your generosity many children who could not afford supplies went back to school with brand new backpacks and much needed school supplies.

Starting next weekend, thru August 20th barrels will be placed at all entrances of

St. Cecilia Church. If you are able to donate any school supplies from the list below,

place them in the barrel - the school supplies will be collected after each weekend Mass.

From the children in need - THANK YOU
