God’s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water God’s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water God’s spirit, given by Christ, flows through us as living water to wash, heal, and satisfy. to wash, heal, and satisfy. to wash, heal, and satisfy.
As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others. As a congregation we become a fountain, sharing this living water with others.

Prelude Chiming of the Hour Welcome Minute for Mission Dr. William T. Bogart
Introit Spirit divine, attend our prayers, and make this house Your home; Descend with all Your gracious powers; O come, great Spirit, come!
*Call to Worship Let us worship God. As a deer longs for flowing streams, so our souls long for you, O God. Our souls thirst for you, O Lord, and your face do we seek. Show us your steadfast love, and grant us your salvation, For you will speak peace to the faithful, to all who turn their hearts to you.
*Hymn 469 Morning Has Broken
*Call to Confession
*Prayer of Confession Compassionate God, you are more ready to hear than we are to speak. You are more ready to forgive than we are to confess. You invite us to open our hearts to you in prayer, but we close ourselves to you and follow other paths. Again and again you draw near, but we keep turning away. Lord, forgive us. Turn us again to you and grant us your mercy, so that we may live the abundant life you have given us in Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. (time for silent confession)
And let God's people say: Amen.
*Assurance of Pardon
*Congregational Response (hymn 4, Sampler, refrain only) The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; God’s mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning; Great is your faithfulness, O Lord, great is your faithfulness.
*The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH
A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)
July 28, 2013
Tenth Sunday after Pentecost
Anthem Teach Me How to Pray Werner
Time with the Children Hannah Norris Children, five years and younger, are invited to remain for the rest of the service
or to the nursery (downstairs in the education building).
Hymn 333 Seek Ye First
First Reading Romans 8:26-27
Psalm 85 Hopson
Refrain The Lord has long looked with favor upon the chosen land; To Jacob’s heirs, the wealth of earth is lavished in their hand. The captive chains of servitude are loosed, the slaves are free; And through God’s grace, the bonds of sin give way to liberty. Refrain Restore to us salvation, Lord, let your displeasure cease; And still the pow’r of your own wrath with gentle winds of peace. My humble heart the still small voice of your great love attend; The faithful, you from death redeem, the fearful you defend. Refrain Your steadfast love and faithful ways will meet us face to face; The arm of justice, mercy sways; the righteous, truth embrace. May wisdom dwell in human law, and justice, courts display; Let righteous ways precede your steps, and guide us on our way. Refrain
Second Reading Luke 11:1-13
Sermon Knock, Knock, Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door Sharon Youngs
*Affirmation of Faith (from A Declaration of Faith) (Presbyterian Church in the United States, 1976)
Jesus lived with a constant sense of God’s presence. He put God’s claim on his life above all else. He joined others in God’s worship and praise. He drew strength from the Scriptures. He prayed and taught his disciples to pray. We believe Christ gives us and demands of us personal lives that are centered in God and open to God’s reality and rule. We are charged to pray for ourselves and others with gratitude, boldness, and persistence, confident that God hears and answers our prayers in ways best for us all. Life in God’s presence issues in life for others, for if we do not love sisters and brothers whom we see, we cannot love God whom we do not see. Amen.

Call to Prayer (first time, choir, second time, all)
Hear our prayer, O Lord, hear our prayer, O Lord; Incline your ear to us and grant us your peace.
Prayers of the People - with The Lord’s Prayer (ecumenical version, p. 16, hymnal)
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.
Offering of God’s Tithes and Our Gifts
*Doxology Hymn 592 Old Hundredth
*Prayer of Dedication
*Hymn 276 Great Is Thy Faithfulness
*Charge and Benediction
*Congregational Response (see insert) Irish Blessing
May the road rise to meet you, may the wind blow at your back, May the sun shine warmly on your face; May the rain fall softly on your field; And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Amen.

A special Davidson Lecture—Mark your calen-
dars for August 18, a big day in the life of FPC.
Read more about it in this month's Banner. There
will be three events that day: (1) FPC will join
three other congregations for worship at the
Grove Center at 11:00 a.m. (in place of our
10:00 a.m. service). (2) We will host a 100-mile
potluck here at FPC from 1:00-3:00 p.m. that is
open to the entire community. Bring a dish for 6-
8 folks that contains at least one ingredient
grown within 100 miles of Oak Ridge. (3) Bill
McKibben, renowned speaker and environmen-
talist will present “Keep the Faith and Do the
Math,” a special FPC-sponsored Davidson Lec-
ture at 7:00 p.m. at the Oak Ridge High School.
There will be many opportunities for service as
we prepare for the day, especially the potluck.
Let Sharon or Adrienne (483-1318) know if
you're available and willing to help!
Bill McKibben
If you wish to donate flowers for worship,
please sign up on the flower chart on the
fellowship hall bulletin board.
The Nominating Committee has begun the
search for nominees for ruling elders for the class
of 2016. They will begin their service this com-
ing January. If you have a recommendation,
please let us know by either speaking to a mem-
ber of the committee or placing the person’s
name in the box at the back of the sanctuary. We
welcome your input and appreciate your partici-
pation in this important process in the life of the
church. Ruling elders must:
Be Christ-centered, prayerful, and
discerning
Be an active member of the congregation
Work well with others
Be willing and faithful in service
Members of the committee are: Bonnie Murray,
chair, Teresa Brittain, Sue Byrne, Gene Ice, and
Susan Sharp.
Volunteers needed—
FPC members staff the
Ecumenical Storehouse
during the month of
August, so please sign
up on the list on the counter in the fellowship
hall. At least four volunteers are needed each
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:45 a.m.
until noon. In addition, at least six people and
three trucks are needed to pick up furniture Sat-
urdays from 8:45 until noon.
The organizers thank all volunteers in advance
for helping to sustain the success of this local
mission project. Our congregation is one of
several Oak Ridge churches that rotate monthly
volunteer responsibilities at the storehouse.
For more information about the storehouse
and our work there, please call Ted Atkinson
at 483-4412.
Please take a few minutes today after
worship to sign the cards that are in
the fellowship hall for homebound
members and others who need some
TLC. This outreach opportunity is
available each Sunday after worship.
