American Hospital Management Company Newsletter
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
It has been and exciting and productive year so far and with
the second half of the year looking to be one of the best ever
for AHMC. As we look around and evaluate the various
markets that we currently work, we see dramatic new
developments both at the hospitals we currently manage as
well as new opportunities to explore.
In Panama, Hospital Nacional continues to lead the region in private tertiary care.
The hospital expansion of the operating rooms, intensive care units and emergency
room, with additional radiology services, is complete and occupancies are high. The
new cancer center within the hospital is online and treating patients, while the da
Vinci robotic surgery unit continues to exceed expectations in volumes and
outcomes. Recently Hospital Nacional successfully performed its first liver transplant
and the kidney transplant program continues to grow.
Construction with Clinica Delgado in Lima, Peru continues to advance and is on
target for the hospital opening in 2015.
The groundbreaking for Tbilisi- American Hospital was in June and we will open the
hospital in the fourth quarter of 2015. The ownership group for Tbilisi-American
Hospital is looking to develop a hospital twice as large in Baku, Azerbaijan and have
as well just inked a new partnership to develop an international hospital in Mongolia.
All three hospital will be managed my AHMC.
Africa still provides a tremendous opportunity in private healthcare over the next 10
to 15 years. The four Crystal Thorpe hospitals in Nigeria, with AHMC is a significant
partner, continue to move forward as well as the two hospitals in Ghana.
The Minimally Invasive Surgery Centre in Aqaba, Jordan has entered the design
phase. In Saudi Arabia AHCM began the management of Al Jazeera Medical
Hospital in Riyadh in May and will assume the management of Bakhsh Hospital, in
Jeddah, in August 2014. Al Qadi Specialty Hospital project is entering its pre-
operations and commissioning phase in the next couple months and will be looking
to open the hospital the first quarter of 2015. AHMC is currently in negotiations with
a few other private hospitals in Saudi as we continue to see the Kingdom as a long-
term opportunity.
Thank you all for being part of AHMC,
Randall Arlett

WEST AFRICAN PROJECTS
AN INTRODUCTION TO JOINT COMMISSION INTERNATIONAL AT AHMC FACILITIES
What is Quality?
Quality is a measure of excellence. It is a state of being free from defects, deficien-cies, and significant variations. This is brought about by the strict and consistent adherence to measurable and verifiable standards.
What are the Standards we need to adhere to?
They are the policies and procedures that the hospital develops according to accept-ed international best practices. This helps everyone to do something the same way and to the same level of excellence. Policies and procedures assist staff in knowing what is expected of them in their job performance. The types of standards created by the Joint Commission include those for patient rights, patient safety, medical staff credentialing, performance improvement, patient confidentiality, pain management, informed consent, and a lot more.
Why is Quality important?
When persons have access to Quality Healthcare they stay healthier overall, they recover more quickly when they become sick, and have less chance for complica-tions when they have health problems. Reaching for the highest level of quality as-sists in providing a safe environment of care for each patient. Everyone wants to receive the best care for themselves and their family members. It is our job to pro-vide them with this level of care.
What is Joint Commission International (JCI)?
JCI works with health care organizations, govern-ments, and international advocates to promote the highest quality standards of care and provide solu-tions for achieving high quality performance. JCI has been a consistent beacon for patient safety and quality improvement in the global community. It was created by the US based accreditation agency, the Joint Commission. JCI has a presence in more than 90 countries today.
Why do AHMC facilities strive for JCI accreditation?
JCI works with health care organizations, governments, and international advocates to promote the highest quality standards of care and provide solutions for achieving high quality performance. JCI has been a consistent beacon for patient safety and quality improvement in the global community. It was created by the US based ac-creditation agency, The Joint Commission. JCI has a presence in more than 90 countries today.
JCI-accredited hospitals in other countries must meet the same standards as U.S. hospitals. Without Joint Commission Accreditation in the US, hospitals have difficul-ty getting licensure and likely go out of business. Receiving JCI accreditation demonstrates to the public that this hospital operates under the highest quality rec-ognized internationally.
Who is responsible for Quality in each hospital?
AHMC facilities are in various stages of the process of creating a department specif-ically devoted to ensuring that the hospital and staff provide high quality healthcare to the citizens the individual countries in which they reside. The Quality Department cannot successfully achieve this by themselves. It requires teamwork from every staff member of the respective hospitals. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that the patients and visitors are treated well and that they receive the highest quality service.
