OCTŌ-BER The name of the month of October has Latin origins. “Octō” is the Latin word for eight, and since October used to be the eighth month of the year when the Roman calendar was being used, it was then given its name. The name remained during the Julian calendar reform, and is now the tenth month of the year.

Beavers in the ParkBeavers have certainly been busy in the west end of Fish Creek Provincial Park - felling trees, building dams, flooding pathways, and greatly impacting park visitor experience in some areas. You may have seen beavers or the signs of beaver activity in the park and in recent years the issue of beavers has been escalating in signifi-cance for the park and community. Did you know that these water loving mammals also provide many eco-logical benefits? Their instinctual activities include the building of dams, which:• Act as speed bumps, decreasing the risk and costs of

major flooding and slowing erosion.• Pool water, allowing sediment suspended in the flow-

ing water upstream to settle out in the pond before the water continues downstream.

• Create unique habitat for plants, insects, amphibians, fish, songbirds, waterfowl and mammals.

• Retain water in times of high flow to slowly release in times of low flow.

• Improve water quality downstream of the dam.• Recharge groundwater reserves - This groundwater is

then released back into the stream during times of low flow, such as late summer.

By gnawing and felling trees, beavers help the riparian poplar forests in Fish Creek Provincial Park to regener-ate. Stumps often re-sprout, naturally diversifying the age class of the forest by creating young trees with old roots. Without beavers in the park, old stands of poplar may not be replaced naturally by younger trees. Inspired by the substantial beaver activity between Marshall Springs and Bebo Grove in Fish Creek, the Friends of Fish Creek are launching the Beaver-Human Coexist-ence Project. The goal of this project is to balance the needs of beavers and park visitors on the landscape.

Working with our partners at Alberta Environment and Parks, The City of Calgary, Cows & Fish and Miistakis Insti-tute, we will be cultivating a greater understanding of the important role this member of the wildlife community plays in the Fish Creek valley. The Friends of Fish Creek are working to foster a harmonious balance with our resident

beavers by installing some simple technology that will allow beavers to pond enough water for winter survival, while preventing the flooding of nearby pathways. We will also be offering a variety of interactive opportunities for the public to learn more about the good that beaver bring to the park and to see these technologies in action. Stay tuned to www.friendsoffishcreek.org to learn more!

Dedicate a Brick to Show Your Support for Fish Creek Provincial ParkHave you seen the individualized engraved bricks in front of the Cookhouse at the Bow Valley Ranch in Fish Creek Provincial Park? Now is your chance to dedicate a brick in the next phase of our brick project – the Fish Creek Community Terrace – which will be installed in front of the Cookhouse near the existing brick pathway. Leave a lasting legacy in Fish Creek as a gift for someone, a special milestone for you and your family, or simply to show others that you support Fish Creek Provincial Park. If you have a small or large business or are starting an entrepreneurial enterprise, consider having a brick en-graved with your company name or website. Bricks are only $250 and you will receive a valuable tax receipt for your donation. For more information, please contact the Friends of Fish Creek or visit https://friendsoffishcreek.org/brick/.

Membership Year Runs Until December 31, 2021The Friends of Fish Creek recently changed our member-ship year to reflect the calendar year and as result of that October is the best time of year to renew your commit-ment to Fish Creek Provincial Park! Membership shows that you care about the sustainability of this park, and while annual rates are very reasonable, funding through membership is essential in helping us to strengthen our conservation messaging and continue our stewardship activities. As a member you will receive more than one year of membership benefits, which include admission to Fish Creek Speaker Series presentations, discounts on courses like the popular Birding Course, and dis-counts at select local businesses. For more information, please contact the Friends of Fish Creek or visit https:// friendsoffishcreek.org/membership/.

1It was 64 years ago, a peaceful student demonstration in Budapest turned to a bloodbath in a single, explosive mo-ment. The communist secret police fired on the ranks of the students, slaying many on the spot.

As Tom Kennedy wrote, their only crime was asking for what all people should have: a decent life, without fear. In other words, the kind of existence that many Canadians today take for granted.

The student demonstration in pursuit of liberty and dem-ocratic reforms ignited a nation-wide revolt against the harsh policies and control embodied in the Communist government of the time.

Their audacity captured the attention and imagination of the world. The last ever broadcast from Freedom Radio was heard across the globe: “Nations of the world, in the name of truth and freedom, help!”

The Soviets responded quickly and cruelly. Acting in breach of promises and international law, they attacked Hungary. Despite the shining promise and rally cry for a “Free Hun-gary,” that ideal was not to be realized for at least another generation. The rest, so they say, is history.

Although the revolution failed, its consequences have been felt ever since, particularly in what is now considered the democratic transition in Central Europe, and in the lives of diaspora communities around the world.

Today, Hungarian immigrants and their descendants have contributed to every corner and part of Canadian life. To my grandparents, and to my father who was just a child when he arrived to Canada, our country was more than just a shelter from the storm.

It was the promise of a fresh start.

As we remember the events of the past, let us reflect on what comes next: building home, speaking out against injustice and honouring the sacrifices of those who came before.

We work to build what all people should have, but proves rare throughout the world: a decent life, without fear.

In other words, the great Canadian life that we must never take for granted.

Respectfully,

Jeromy Farkas, Ward 11 Councillor and Palliser Resident

RESIDENT PERSPECTIVES

The Power of

“I will…”by Elisabeth Fayt

For ten years, I was Executive Assistant to Canada’s coffee king, billionaire Ron Joyce, and I traveled the world on his private jet. Never a dull moment in the life of the rich and famous! A normal day would very naturally include meeting with business dignitaries, famous personalities, and politicians.

You might ask, “how does someone get a job like this?” Well, I remember quite vividly the day I re-ceived the job offer, and sharing it with my sister, who quickly exclaimed, “Don’t you remember? You pre-paved this!”

It all came back to me. Fresh out of high school, with an aptitude for secretarial work, I remember emphat-ically pre-paving, “One day, I will be Private Assistant to a billionaire who has his own airplane!” Not sure exactly where that came from, but I pictured myself in a business suit, briefcase in hand, walking up the tarmac with my boss.

And that’s where I left it. I went about my life, doing my very best, taking opportunities as they arose. Then came the chance to work as an Executive Assis-tant for Tim Hortons in their Calgary Regional Office. A few years into the job, the Founder noticed how I worked with great passion and purpose. He sat me down and said “Elisabeth, you make things happen. I need you on the road with me as I build my business and empire.” And there it was, my dream job, and my pre-pave come to life.

This is the power of Intention, my friends. It’s what I’ve always called pre-paving, and it starts with “I will”. Have faith and believe in the power of your words. They will not fail you, when you say them with conviction. Never underestimate your own ability to create your dreams.

What is your “I will”? Pre-pave it, and make it happen.

Dear neighbours,

October marks the time of year when the weather begins to cool, the air becomes crisp, and the leaves change col-our. I hope that you all enjoyed the warm weather and sunshine that we had in Calgary-Glenmore this summer.

COVID-19 has presented us with a variety of challenges, one of those being our economy. Our government did what it had to do in the spring to protect all Albertans, and as a result, we are faced with a historic $24.2 billion deficit. We’ve developed a bold and ambitious recovery plan to build long-term strategies to diversify our econ-omy and create tens of thousands of jobs now. By build-ing roads, schools and other core infrastructure, we are benefitting our community. By diversifying our economy and attracting investment with Canada’s most competi-tive tax environment, we are putting Alberta on a path for a generation of growth. Our government is ensuring that Alberta has the most competitive business environ-ment. Our recovery plan has accelerated the Job Cre-ation Tax Cut to 8% on July 1, 2020, which was a year and a half sooner than promised. Alberta’s government is doubling down on efforts to reduce regulatory burdens and barriers for businesses through red tape reduction.

October 12 is Thanksgiving. I hope you and your family can take time to enjoy this holiday together and re-member what you are thankful for. As always, it is my honour to serve as your MLA. Please feel free to contact our office at any time.

Sincerely,

Whitney Issik
