Connecting in QuarantineThe new “normal” certainly hasn’t been easy or what most of us would have invited; and although we are getting through this tough time, the common theme seems to be a longing to connect more personally with one another. So, we’ve put on our creative caps and come up with some opportunities to connect a little more and we hope you will consider taking advantage of these.

July Jubilee in QuarantineThe July Jubilee is an annual DAPS tradition celebrating the birthday of Clarice Dougherty. Clarice founded DAPS in 1978 when her husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD). This year’s virtual July Jubilee will be the first of its kind, but with your help we can make it fun, interactive, and memorable for all. No registration is required, so we encourage you to invite your loved ones to be a part of our celebration which will honor those keeping Clarice’s mission alive—our outstanding volunteers and instructors.

We also invite you to submit a clever or creative poem that is quarantine themed. It doesn’t have to be long and you don’t need to be a poet to participate. Just email us your poem by July 5 and it will be included in our program. Prefer to remain anonymous? No problem —but it will be a contest and participants will have a chance to vote on their favorite poem submitted. The winner will be announced and a prize awarded.

are spouses of someone with PD, and some are adult children of a parent with PD. If you or someone you know would like to connect with a PD Pal, let us know and we will be sure to match you up with someone that can help you along this journey. PD Pals are here to help—whether that be through phone calls, emails, or texts.

Connecting VirtuallyDAPS has become much more active on social media, providing you with new information such as webinars, resources, and other helpful information. We encourage you to stay connected with us on any of our social media sites to hear about the latest news on PD and to connect with others.

Mondays with MikeEvery Monday at 3:00 p.m. CDT, we welcome friends, members, and supporters of DAPS to join us virtually on Zoom. This has been a great opportunity

to connect with new and old friends, share funny stories, and learn more about how DAPS is keeping up with new and challenging demands during this pandemic. This informal gathering allows you to join or leave when it is convenient for you. If you haven’t joined us, we hope you’ll gather with us in July.

Moving Forward CommitteeLastly, DAPS’ Moving Forward Committee continues to meet regularly to address, determine, and discuss the safest measures for resuming in-person classes. There are many considerations to take into account, including the facilities’ decisions to re-open. Although dates have not been established as to when we will resume classes, the committee and the Medical Advisory Board have been hard at work to address the standards and procedures necessary to ensure a safe return to classes.

As the landscape of our daily living continues to evolve, we hope that some of these opportunities will help you stay connected.

Spotlight on DAPS Instructor...

Danielle Mitchell

Danielle Mitchell is a speech therapist and has been leading the Duncanville speech class since 2013. She graduated from TWU in 2002 with a Masters of Science in Speech & Language Pathology. Danielle came to DAPS when a client she was seeing at her former place of employment asked if she would be interested in teaching a speech class in Duncanville. In 2014 she became LSVT (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) certified and she maintains her certification through online courses.

When she isn’t teaching classes, Danielle and husband Billy are hanging out with their 13-year-old daughter, 10-year-old son, two furry pups, and two fuzzy bunnies. Join Danielle on Mondays at 1:00 p.m. CDT via Zoom. See https://daps.us for details.

Adult Children of a Parent with Parkinson’s Disease

Adult children of people with Parkinson’s often struggle with unique issues and

circumstances as care partners. Whether it be switching to the role of caretaker from the traditional role of child, or dealing with a change in sibling dynamics, these issues

are common. If you’d like to meet with other adult children who are experiencing

similar situations, let us know so that we can connect you with others who are here

to support you.

Do you remember the fable The Tortoise and the Hare? The hare repeatedly raced ahead, got tired and stopped to rest, whereas the tortoise maintained a steady pace and won the race, eventually. In this fast-paced world, the thought of slowing down seems foreign, uncomfortable, and even lazy. Let’s explore another perspective. The human machine is remarkable in its potential and its shortcomings. I have taught and trained performance enhancement at a fast, hard pace and a slow, deliberate pace. Both have their value and each has their place in developing overall human potential.Consider that when we move fast like the hare, our muscles fire in a rapid succession to facilitate the action of running. This forces our vestibular network (responsible for balance, postural, and spatial awareness) to process stimuli at a very high rate of speed. While this fast pace can increase reaction times and reflexes, it also uses fewer muscles overall and invites the potential for neural “short circuits” causing trips and falls. Have you ever seen a young child run right past their feet, face first into the grass? I have, its hilarious. But more to the point, their brain outpaced their body and wham, gravity takes over. Just like any fine-tuned machine, this fast pace requires all balance and motor systems to be operating at near, or full, potential. So many factors can influence these motor systems from proper nutrition and hydration, to quality sleep, reduced stress and yes, less screen time.Parkinson’s disease (PD) offers the added challenge of disrupting the optimum flow of information through the balance and motor systems. As PD symptoms progress, motor functions are further impaired and coordination becomes more difficult. This makes moving at a faster pace harder and significantly more dangerous. Enter Tai Chi and Qigong training, or let’s call it “The Way of the Tortoise”.I won’t bore you with the history of these arts, just some contextual information. Qigong (Chee-Gong) typically involves slow, controlled movements with an emphasis on breath control and mental concentration. These movements can be very simple to complex in nature, performed seated or standing, and are done repeatedly to achieve a level of internal awareness and competency. Tai Chi

comes in 5 main styles, but at its core is a collection of choreographed movements, arranged in a specific sequence, designed to teach martial arts principles. Each has their training value and I often prescribe these practices for my therapeutic clients based on their specific needs.Well, you have waited long enough—here comes the Tortoise, moving slowly and deliberately. This lingering pace stimulates not only the large muscles used for running but also all the other supporting muscles. This leads to the development of deeper, overall muscle density and strength. Also, the neurotransmitters are active for much longer which has been shown to improve overall muscle control and function. In addition, slow, deep, relaxed breathing is introduced activating the “slow down” side of our autonomic nervous system. It is well known that dopamine production is impaired when we experience chronic stress, and in my experience stress also exacerbates physiological symptoms of PD. Bottom line, the more we learn to reduce our stress response, the more dopamine is available for motor function. Our mental acuity is then focused on encouraging the breath to lead the movements which can further strengthen neural pathways and synaptic connections while actively deescalating our nervous system. Think about it, the Tortoise is not stressed, not in a hurry, it is simply following its own pace and allowing that to be enough.

In summary, through my work with PD clients, I have found that a focused mind, slow, controlled movements, and integrated deep breathing techniques can bring remarkable improvements in motor control, balance, coordination, and mental acuity, with a caveat: The brain takes time to adapt and respond with meaningful neural adjustments, so long-lasting improvement requires training, consistency, persistence, and patience. Like the Tortoise, “The more you know, the slower you go.”

Virtual Classes & Webinars

Have you made room to Zoom? Research from the Parkinson’s Foundation Parkinson’s Outcomes

Project, the largest-ever clinical study of Parkinson’s, suggests that people with PD should do at least 2.5 hours of exercise a week for a better quality of life.

If boredom is getting the best of you, consider trying one of our Zoom classes that are offered 7 days a week. We understand that technology can be frustrating and intimidating, and we are here to help you stay active and connected. We can help you get set up and ready to Zoom!
