As we continue interviewing the Purple Line Extension Section 1 stations, we arepleased to interview the La Brea Station, currently the most important station.

Wilshire/La Brea Station (La Brea): You could just say best.

Purple Line Extension (PLE): I meant you are the furthest toward completion.La Brea Station: Or just say most important.

PLE: I don’t believe the other stations would agree.

La Brea: Let’s look at this logically. I am the only station that supports the twintunnel boring machines digging the tunnels. The tunnel segments come in theNorth Yard and are lowered into that shaft. All the soil from the tunnelexcavations are hauled away from the South Yard. On an average day, 3,750 tonsof soil are removed. And my South Yard contains the grout used by the tunnelboring machines.

PLE: Everyone would agree that you are crucial.

La Brea: Not my sisters. I am always hearing from Fairfax that he will be thegateway to the Academy Museum and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art andthe Petersen Automotive Museum. La Cienega constantly brags that she sits inBeverly Hills. Well that doesn’t matter if the tunnel doesn’t reach you!

PLE: OK. So, what would you like our readers to know about you?

La Brea: I am the longest station, 1,100 feet long.

Page 4: July 2019 - Section 1 Updates - Purple Line Extensionmedia.metro.net/projects_studies/westside/images/2019-07-ple-newsletter.pdfPLE: That may be the reason most of the fossils have

PLE: Actually, the La Cienega Station is just as long.

La Brea: Do you know that La Cienega means “the swamp.” Enough said.

PLE: That may be the reason most of the fossils have been found there.

La Brea: All I do is sacrifice—the first station begun and the last to be completed.

PLE: It’s true that all the equipment supporting the tunnel boring machines mustbe removed before you open.

La Brea: I’ve been speaking with the Wilshire/Normandie Station on the Red Line.. .

PLE: I didn’t realize that you knew each other.

La Brea: We are BFF. She tells me that I am taken for granted—she has the sameproblem, being overlooked compared to the Vermont and Western stations.

PLE: I don’t think that’s accurate.

La Brea: She said that I should speak up for myself.

PLE: Well, that doesn’t seem to be a problem. Thank you for your time, La Brea.

Meanwhile, station construction and excavation is progressing at Wilshire/Fairfaxand Wilshire/La Cienega Stations to prepare for Soyeon and Elsie's (Section 1tunnel boring machines) journey west.

They both quietly tunneled 9,750 feet east tothe current Purple Line terminus at Wilshire/Western. This month, the TBMs willbe dissembled and trucked back to Wilshire/La Brea Station for their journey westto Wilshire/Fairfax and beyond.

End-wall Piling to begin for Westwood/UCLA Station Spring2020

Piling is a construction process by which long steel piles are drilled into the soil toform the outlining walls for the underground station box. Each pile is about 90 feetlong, and Metro’s contractors will be drilling the piles into the soil, not drivingthem. Drilling piles is a much quieter process than driving them into the ground.End-wall piling to support tunneling at the Westwood/UCLA station is nowscheduled to begin in Spring 2020. The work will be completed in stages.

The general area for the end-wall piling work will be on Wilshire Bl between
