Fund Raising Event - Big SuccessOur first annual fund raising event was a huge success netting the team just over $1200 in donations. Tremendousthanks to Randy Sleet for working with our HOA to sponsor the June 30th community 4th of July BBQ event heldin the Events Center. Also a big thank you to the many CERT members that helped to make the event such agreat success. Randy is already planning something else for December!!

Mass Casualty Drill - Another Big SuccessOur CERT team was out in force on June 13th for a full fledged mass casualty drill. Greg Richmond led a 9

member search and rescue team while Lynn Serniuk and Bella Barrientos co-lead a 6 person traiage/medicaltreatment area. We had 18 victim volunteers from the IslandWalk and Gran Paradiso communities staged on the

event lawn behind the Events Center. Projected to last about 1 hour, the exercise was completed in only 45minutes in a most professional manner! We had representatives from the North Port Fire and Police departments

on hand to observe the drill, and we received very favorable comments from them for the sheer number ofparticipants we were able to field and the efficient manner in which we handled this simulated mass casualty

situation. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL FOR A JOB VERY WELL DONE!

Team Members Advance Their TrainingOver a dozen IslandWalk and Gran ParadisoCERT members attended a Stop the Bleedtraining course offered by the North Port FireDepartment in June. This new and important

nation-wide program is designed to teachaverage citizens how to save lives by controllingexcessive bleeding from an injury or wound. Theprogram is a reflection of lessons learned fromthe all too numerous mass shooting incidents thatare plaguing our country in recent years.

These same individuals also received a shorttraining course in the proper way to organize andconduct a grid search of large open areas. Thetraining was provided by the Peace River K-9 Search and Rescue Team.

This can be a valuable skill to learn in the eventof a Silver or Amber Alert in our community.Being able to organize an area search andconduct it efficiently and thoroughly is important!

Zone Leader, Paul Nienaber provided a shortteach-back presentation on CERTcommunications to team members at the bi-monthly team meeting on June 9th with specialemphasis on the communications SOP beingused at IslandWalk for disaster response.

Looks like Gran Paradiso will be implementing acompatible communications system of their own.The two CPs should be able to talk to each otherwithout any interference between IW and GPZone communications.

Neighborhood Grant Initiative Input NeededWe will have an opportunity to apply for a grant of up to $10,000 from SarasotaCounty in September. We've had some great suggestions from the membership forsupplies and equipment to be purchased...thank you all! Keep in mind that this is amatching grant, so we will either need to raise half of the money asked for in thegrant, or we will need to perform some number of volunteer hours, valued at $20/hour,to qualify for the grant. So far, we have 205 expressions of support from thecommunity; but, we need more. This is a major scoring factor for our grant application. If you can canvass your street of social gathering for some more signatures that woudbe most appreciated. Download and use the form at right for this purpose, andremember that only one household is counted, not eveyone in that household.

If you have any suggestions for this grant request, please contact PaulNienaber at 941-468-3843 or by email to [email protected].
