Pastor’s Pen—Summer Reflections
Still After All These Years
As I outlined the lessons for the weeks of summer, I became aware of how the themes of
reformation thinking are still at the heart of my faith. Particular readings from Luke, Gala-
tians, and Colossians stirred an awareness of how deeply I experience theology. Theology that
has stood the test of time better than science, medicine, or politics and has in many cases freed
us to let these other forms of knowledge grow.
Key to the reformation was the acknowledgement that a church filled with sinful and self
centered human beings will become corrupt. The church, therefore, must be a Reforming
Church always re-forming itself in Christ.
Galatians tells us that in Christ we have a radical new
freedom, “neither Jew nor Greek, slave or free, male and
female, but all are one in Christ”. Our oneness does not
destroy our diversity, rather, it sets it free. Free to use our
particular gifts for our particular calling. Free to discover
our full humanity resides in Christ. You see, our differ-
ences describe us but don’t define us. Unity in diversity is what we are called into and giv-
en in the “priesthood of all believers”.
We enter this priesthood through God’s grace offered to us in the gift of Baptism. We are
nourished in this priesthood by the gift of God’s grace in Communion. Our relationship with
God is not dependent on our logic, our reason, our action or our emotions. Our relationship
with God is dependent on God alone who has offered and continues to offer God’s self to us. We
are saved by grace.
Christ has made us free. Christ has paid the price. We can do much to show love, adoration,
appreciation, and praise. We can do much to grow deeper in that loving relationship, to our
own benefit and the benefit of others, but the relationship itself is a free gift. We can teach and
learn from each other how to live the wonder of that Love, but anything we add as a require-
ment for that relationship negates the action of Christ.
That is Galatians message of grace. Christ, the Lord of all that exists makes us a part of
himself. This means that in God’s great love, the Father makes us lord of all in Christ. It also
tells us that to live the joy of this radical freedom in Christ means to live as Christ for each oth-
er. The Joy of faith is found in this dialectic: We are in the same moment “Lord of all we see
and Servant of all we meet.” Serving Christ by serving others in Christ is true freedom. Free
in Christ you are your true self. Free in Christ your particular uniqueness makes the unity

Many Thanks to everyone from Christ the King who helped make this year’s Vacation Bible
School in Stonington a big success. A special thank you to Patty Lindstrom for planning and
preparing the delicious lunches and to all who provided the food. Trevor Christensen helped
lead the singing and for that we thank him. Other volunteers
from Christ the King included … Roland Jacobson, Alice Hintsa-
la, Brett Boudreau, Abbie Boudreau, Alesha Swanson, Pam Carl-
son, Donna Orzel and Connie Schmidt. Printed elsewhere in this
newsletter are pictures featuring the awesome program.
A heartfelt thank you to the Funeral Committee for the won-
derful meal that was served following the funeral service for my husband Robert Swisher. Al-
so, thanks to all who remembered me and my family with your prayers and cards. – Kristine
Swisher
Congratulations to Tim & Kim Kenneally on the birth of their son, Timothy Joseph Kenneal-
ly. We would also like to congratulate Kelly & Jaylene Kenneally as they welcomed a son,
Cam Ryker to their family. Congratulations to these new parents. A child is a precious gift
from God. May his blessings be with you and your little one today and always.
whole. Free in Christ your diversity makes the oneness one.
The rest of Galatians is a call. Our individual will is a delicate thing. While we find whole-
ness and freedom in the will and intention of God, we live in fear. We simply cannot grasp this
grace and so we fall back into what we believe to be the safety of our own choices. Acting on
what we believe to be free will, our actions move us away from God, even when we think we are
making the right choices. The exploration of the tension between free will and the bondage of
the will is a theme the reformers debated. But this is a topic for another time.
It is enough to say that this tension between acting on our own and trusting in the will of God
is at the root of the concept “Sinner – Saint”: Sinner by our own action, Saint by the grace of
God. I find great comfort in Mother Teresa’s expressions of doubt/faith, trust/fear, and unity/
isolation. She expresses the essence of a sinner-saint: saved, loved and led by grace.
The Biblical texts for this summer provide place to review, reflect, and hopefully nourish the
heart of our faith. Use the summer’s sermons as an opportunity to challenge yourself. Let’s
grow together.
Your Friend in Christ, Tom
