PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Hello Members, We are mid-way through the year already and the frosty mornings confirm we are truly into winter. I hope you are all taking care to stay warm and watch your step on the slick footpaths. It’s important to stay active in the cold months and we have plenty to get involved with at the club. Join a section or come along to some music and meet some new people. Bingo has started once again on Tuesday mornings at 10am in the Main Bar. The first session was well attended and numbers will continue to grow over the next few weeks. It is free to play and all members are welcome. The last game will be on Tuesday August 27th. Our first Oyster lunch on the 26th of June went quite well and some of us are looking forward to a second helping on the July 10th date! Family day is on July 7th in the Sports Hall from 1:30pm. It’s a fun time for the kids. We’ll have a bouncy castle, balloons and lots of goodies. It is free for members and their families, so make sure you bring the kids and grandkids. The Mid-Winter Christmas Buffet is Sunday July 14th in the Sports Hall. Expect the usual Christmas dinner feast and special desserts. Eddie Simon will provide entertainment and maybe a Christmas carol or two. Book in with the office or ring 349-9026 to save your seat. We also have a couple of shows coming to the club this month. Friday 5th is The Big Voices by Jon Palmer. The following week is a Pink Floyd tribute on Saturday the 13th. On August 10th, Brendan Dugan will be here with a Family & Friends Show. Tickets for all shows are available at the office now. Lastly, I’d like to thank those of you that came out and voted last month, your support for the club and committee is appreciated. Congratulations to the new and returning Board members. We have a big year ahead. Regards, Kevin Cole

Hi members, here we are into July now. The colder months are upon us but we are still getting up to 44 members lately on a normal Thursday night. Firstly updating on our Saturday Interclub games, we are now into the 2nd round with 3 wins 4 losses and only 5 weeks to go, we need to do better. We have finished our 1st set of Aggregate games, best accumulated scores of 5 from 6 nights. The overall winner for our 1st Aggregate was Cheryl Gianelly on 83, with John Manna on 75, and Bill Bowley on 71. Well done to you and congrats to everyone who was so close to these scores. We had Pairs night , this last Thursday of June, and had 54 players on

the night- always a popular night for members. A great night where everyone gets to play with their same chosen partner all night .The winners were Jimmy Patu & Trevor Tubman, 2nd =Tom Rae & Maurice King with Bill Bowley & Ross Ranger. Congratulations to everyone with the consistently

good scores. We are starting this month off on Thurs July 4th, with a 6 handed fun night for our section members with an “American Theme". We have got close to 50 players who have entered their names so we’re looking to have a great night, finishing off with supper. Our next set of Aggregate games start on 11th July for 6 weeks after that. The draw has been done for our 'Winter Tournament Games', with groups of pairs (16 pairs) playing firstly in sections of 4 against each other. These games mostly get played downstairs in the main bar over the next few months, with ultimate winners being presented the trophy at our Xmas Breakup. Just a reminder, we will be hosting a 6 handed tournament open to all clubs and our members on Sunday 18th August. We hope we get the usual good

numbers that support these tournaments we host. Our section members are looking forward to the 1st All Sports night, the Dumbo Hampton on Fri 12th July, with our usual 2 teams competing and then also the Alan Cole Trophy on Sunday 4th August, playing Euchre against the other sporting sections. Breaking News... We have just arranged for our Card Section Members, a Mid-Winter Outing to Rangiora Races (usually later in year) but Rangiora Trotting Club lost some of their dates so they can only offer this winter date for us to be part of…Sunday, 11th August bus will leave the club at 9am, go somewhere first, then to the races. $45.00 each, please get your money to Cheryl Gianelly. Don't miss out! As always, we welcome any new members that wish to join our fun section, just come along and play for the night. Be here at 7.15pm and all finished by 9.55pm. Regards, Lorraine Cole

CRIB Welcome back, sorry we've missed the last couple of monthly newsletters, it's hard to meet the high standards of our last writers, Paul aka Polyester & Lesley. Welcome Christine & Derrick to our committee. We are back in full swing on Wednesday nights @ 7pm. Thanks to the unsung heroes who set up & then clean the room each night and do the raffles. We've had a new rookie on scene called Julie who just might be hustling us! She’s already won a couple of nights and even went close to getting a clean card until the last game where she met some tough competition to deny her the win. Last week we had one of the junior members turn up for a game to TRY and teach us how it's done, thanks Ryan Bulman always great to see you Matt. We are

currently in the middle of our 1st aggregate where there’s a close race at the top, and more at the bottom. On June 28th we had our

Mid-Winter Christmas dinner at Hoof Beats restaurant at the Racecourse. We have had a few people go off the board Rose & Russell, Ann & James so congratulations!

Great work! We would just like to say thank you to all the members

that support our raffles, it's our turn again on Fridays for two weeks, so get down early for the club draw watch some footy have a beer, play some pool & have a chat (korero).

Please feel free to come in watch & learn, it's never too late. Take care & keep warm – The Cribbage Crew

Pam Brewer was next, followed by Glenda Kingi Hazel. There was only one 2 Wayne brewer- the lucky card holder. Sherralee Boyce & Debbie Purdon Winners – In-house Ladies pairs

Letitia Jackson, Clare Shanaher, Sherralee Boyce, Maxine Soal & Veronica Wynyard

South Island Ladies Team Trophy Winners

POOL We are half way through the Interclub season and all teams are going well. There are two or three teams that are in contention for a spot in the final’s series at this stage. There’s still another 3 months to go so anything could happen. The only Clubs New Zealand tournament in June was the South Island Open & Ladies Singles and Pairs held at the Gore Town and Country Club.

Ladies Pairs- The Hornby Pairing of Sherralee Boyce & Clare Shanaher played outstanding to make the final but sadly it wasn’t to be. Letitia Jackson & Maxine Soal won the Main Flight. Ladies Singles- Maxine Soal played sensationally to reach the final but went down to a very impressive young lady, Lydia Burnett from Geraldine.

Sherralee Boyce made the final of the Trophy and Letitia Jackson won the Main Flight. Hornby ladies won the teams trophy for the 2nd year in a row. Open Pairs- Daniel & Josh Bowen made the final. Unfortunately, they went down to the Dunedin pairing of Glen Spiers & Danny Ryan. Open Singles- Dan Bowen made the last 8 in what was an extremely strong field. Dan was knocked out by Cashmere’s Adam Lilley who went on to win the title. We also held our in-house Ladies pairs. It was taken out by Sherralee Boyce & Debbie Purdon over Veronica Wynyard & Margo Kingi. In July, Cashmere are hosting the CNZ National Ladies and Masters. Hornby will be represented by a large number of players and I would like to wish them all the very best of luck. Regards, Allan Cowan

OUTDOOR BOWLS June’s match was the last game in our 2018-19 season and was played at the Racecourse Bowling Club. After a frosty start the day warmed up and a small number enjoyed the good facilities and green which made for a great day out. Bowling in good conditions the Robin Leary skipped team with Neville Houston and Fay Pedersen were overall winners by point’s difference from the Les Wilson / Lois Clark skipped team with Dick Wragg and Ian Smith. Only one notice that is our A.G.M. on Sunday the 14th July @ 10.30am in the Main Bar of the Club, keep this date free, look forward to seeing all our member’s attending. Regards, Robin Leary

SNOOKER The section’s Junior snooker championship was won by Tom Ng. He defeated Maurice Lancaster in the final 3-1. Interclub snooker starts next week and we have 7 teams entered- a good muster. The Canterbury Pairs was played last week and a top class field of 14 teams entered. Bill Earle run the tournament and was conducted in his usual high standard. The winners were Malcolm Pollock and Dale Shannon. They have won this tournament 2 years in a row. Once again the tables were presented in outstanding order which happens all the time thanks Hornby’s table groomer Graham Walker. Cheers, Pot Black

TABLE TENNIS The interclub competition is halfway through the season and only the D Grade looking to have any chance of winning this year, with the Hornby 1 team being only two points off the lead. Last month the Canterbury Clubs Champs were held at Hornby with 34 entries over the four grades. Bob Lawson and John Raso won the D Grade Doubles. Bob Lawson then won the D Grade Singles with John Raso as Runner-up. The C Grade Singles was won by Noel Ward, while Alan Law teamed up with Sumiko Yoshioka to win the B Grade Doubles. This month sees the Canterbury Clubs Veterans and Masters Champs played at Hornby. The event will be held on Sunday the 21st, commencing at 9am in the Sports Hall. Regards, Glenn

TRAVEL

Hello – Oh my – just how cold are these frosts?!!!!! We held our Mid- winter Christmas dinner on the 7th of June with 71 members attending. What an amazing job the staff did, we arrived to a power cut for the first 1/2hr but once power was restored the staff managed to present the most amazing dinner. It really was superb and you would struggle to find anything better anywhere. We enjoyed music by Fire and Ice which we have arranged for three years now. We as a section are pleased we were able to hire the sports hall for this function. On Sunday 23rd June Bev McNichol arranged a breakfast at the Casino, where 30 plus people attended and quite a few stayed on to play the pokies etc after the meal, some doing extra well at this. Thanks Bev for organising this.

Next events

Still endeavouring to sort something for July and August, it’s a struggle with it being so cold to think of somewhere warm to go. Do not worry however as I am sure we will arrange something fairly soon. Please watch the notice board for future outings. Next meeting upstairs 7pm Monday 15th July 2019. Warm regards, Lyn Wright
