MARY LOU’S LOVE FOR WATSON RUN Eulogy given by Don Orner at her funeral

...It is my honor to be in front of you today. I am here to honor a request made by Mary Lou. Mary Lou contacted me on August 22, 2015, to explain her failing health, and to ask me to be here at her funeral service, to share with you her love for the Watson Run community. Of utmost importance to her was the loving atmosphere that she certainly helped to create and promote here with her Watson Run family. Please bear with me as I explain my view of how she and Raymond arrived here. They were living east of Watson Run when Mary Lou suggested to Raymond that it was time to move west, so he loaded the wagon, hitched the oxen to it and began the trek a mile west to a new beginning- a new development- Watson Run! That pioneering experience, which might not have happened exactly as I just described, brought the Goods to Watson Run in July of 2007. They were among the first four families to put down roots here. As more pioneers came from various points of the compass, Mary Lou was always ready with kind and welcoming words for them. When she was able, she participated in many Watson Run activities, including Christmas dinners, birthday celebrations, pot luck dinners, Valentine’s Day breakfasts, Shady Maple breakfasts (I am starting to see a pattern of eating here), or opening her home to anyone who wanted to see “the log cabin in the basement”. Another opportunity to share her love for her neighbors. Now I will speak directly to the residents of Watson Run. On a few occasions she and I discussed the family aspect of our community. We agreed that anyone can be a part of a subdivision of houses on neatly cared for streets. But she viewed us as a large, loving family- not just a group of houses in eastern Lancaster County. That being said, her wish was that we continue the tradition that we have here. She challenges us to keep the love alive for one another in Watson Run- a love that was a daily exer-cise for Mary Lou. So I call on you today to quietly pledge to honor her wishes and hopes that we will always show kindness and love for each other. It was just two weeks ago today that fellow resident Bill Watkins suggested that those who were available would meet in front of the Goods’ house. More than 75 of us met at the appointed hour and sang “Amazing Grace” to Mary Lou & Raymond followed by circling the house as we joined hands in silent prayer. That, my friends, is the unselfish love that Mary Lou hopes we will continue, as she watches over us from the heavens above. In closing, I will say that throughout my friendship with her over the last nine years, I realized that Mary Lou had at least five loves in her life. She loved the Lord, she loved Raymond, her family, the mountains-people-and cabin in Tioga County, and she loved Watson Run and her Watson Run family. I probably have put them in the wrong order of importance to her, but I am confident that these were her loves. Let’s make it everyone’s goal to continue to share the love for each other as Mary Lou was so willing to share her love with everyone in this room and in the community that she loved- Watson Run. Thank you.

THE PRESIDENT’S CORNER

Happy July! Summer is finally here. It’s time to be outdoors and enjoy our community. It’s won-derful to see so many residents out and about. The pool is open. I would like to send a brief reminder that there are pool rules that were established so that all of the residents and their guests can enjoy it. The rules are posted right on our website; www.watsonrun.com. I ask that you please respect them and I would just like to emphasize a few of the rules:

-There is absolutely no running or jumping and that especially includes children.

-Residents must be present with all guests either child or adult and are responsible for all conduct. No child should ever be left unattended at the pool.

-There is a limit of 5 guests per household at any time.

-Children under the age of 18 are permitted from 11:00 AM -2:00 PM and from 6PM-8PM. Pool hours are 5:00 AM – 11:00 PM for residents.

-Please return all furniture to its original location after use including closing umbrellas. Please be respectful of your fellow residents. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the pool, please always feel free to contact me.

I would also like to address all of our new

residents. You chose Watson Run, this beautiful

community, to settle in and build the home of

your dreams. You made the right choice! You

finally move in after a long construction of red

dirt and mud. Surprise! Now there is a list of

items that are wrong and need to be fixed. Then,

to make matters worse, your lawn (weed garden)

looks horrible. I just want you to know that we

have all been there and you are not alone in this

journey. The “to do list” will be fixed and your

lawn will look great by next summer. Please

reach out to the HOA or your neighbors for any

guidance. You chose the right place. Remember,

Watson Run is not just a bunch of beautiful

homes but of wonderful people who make this

community Home Sweet Home. The Watson

Run HOA Executive Board is here for all of you

so please always feel free to reach out to us no

matter how small or large your concern is.

I want to thank you for the prayers, cards, visits, and flowers during Mary Lou’s illness. A special “thank you” for the circle of love. It was great, and

we were delighted with all the support. Another thank you for the beautiful floral bouquet sent to the church. It’s great to be a part of the family of Watson Run. It’s even greater to be a part of the family of God. God Bless, Raymond Good

My three-year-old daughter stuck

out her hand and said, “Look at the

fly I killed, Mommy.” Since she

was eating a juicy pickle at the

time, I thrust her contaminated

hands under the faucet and

washed them with antibacterial

soap. After sitting her down to

finish her pickle, I asked, with a

touch of awe, “How did you kill

that fly all by yourself?”

Between bites, she said, “I hit it

with my pickle.”

When asked for his name by the

coffee shop clerk, my brother-in-

law answered, “Marc, with a C.”

Minutes later, he was handed his

coffee with his name written on

the side: Cark.

The military has a long, proud

tradition of pranking recruits.

Here are a few of their favorites:

*Instructed a private in the mess

to look for left-handed spatulas

*Had a new guy conduct a “boom

test” on a howitzer by yelling

“Boom!” down the tube in order to

“calibrate” it

*Ordered a private to bring back a

five-gallon can of dehydrated

water (in fact, the sergeant just

wanted an empty water can)

My five-year-old son is crazy

about cars, so I took him to his

first car show. He loved seeing all

the different models and brands

and gushed over the big engines,

the colors, and even the wheels.

But the car he was most impressed

with was a hearse. “Mom!” he

shouted. “Look at all this storage!”

While on patrol, I arrested a bur-

glar who’d injured himself running

from a home. He told me he’d bro-

ken in and unhooked the phone

before searching for valuables.

But he’d panicked when he heard a

woman’s voice. I entered the house

and heard the same voice: “If

you’d like to make a call, please

hang up and try your call again.”

My five-year-old, Matt, worked

with a speech therapist on the ch

sound, which came out k. The

therapist asked him to say

chicken. He responded with

kitchen. They tried again and

again, but it always came out

kitchen. Undeterred, she pushed

him for one more try. Matt sighed

and said, “Why don’t we just call it

a duck?”

Eli’s is open seven days a week 6am – 2pm specializing in homemade foods. Noteworthy: Groups of 10 or more that have reservations, the coordinator’s meal is free. We have made this a favorite breakfast stop after church on Sundays and are looking forward to trying the lunch menu.

SWEET CORN IS COMING

The September 2016 Voice featured Sam and Mary Esh owners of Esh’s Discount Grocery Store. This month, meet their son Amos and daughter-in-law Marilyn whose 73-acre farm adjoins Phase 3 of Watson Run.

Amos bought the farm from his father in 1997 and continues to raise alfalfa and corn that is fed to their herd of 48 Holstein cows. The cows are milked twice a day, and most of the milk is sold to Land O’ Lakes where it becomes butter.

Marilyn is the produce gardener in the family, and she plants only one variety of sweet corn—Incredible. July 4 usually marks the arrival of local corn, but Incredible will not be ready until approximately the third week of July. Marilyn will contact Joe Rothwein in our community a day or two before the corn is to be harvested. Joe will send out an email letting us know when and where the corn may be purchased. The Day the World Came To Town 9/11 in Gander, Newfoundland

Did you ever wonder what happened when the United States closed its airspace after the 9/11 attacks? Where did jetliners from Europe bound for the United States land?

Thirty-eight planes landed in Gander, New-foundland. The airport there had originally opened in 1938 as a military airbase. Passengers and crew totaling almost 6,600 descended upon Gander, who's population was around 10,000 at the time.

This book chronicles the stories of the pilots, air traffic controllers, passengers, and the citizens of Gander. You even learn about the pets travelling in the cargo hold.

This is the uplifting story of the generosity and selflessness of the residents of Gander and the surrounding towns.

I enjoyed this non-fiction account and have provided a copy of this book for the clubhouse library. by April Biller

This is the second stand for Dutchland Pretzels originating in 2010 in the New Castle, Delaware Farmers Market. Menu items: Pretzels (Plain, Salt, & Cinna-mon), pretzels nuggets, beef dog pretzel wraps and cheese dog pretzel wraps. Also including Little Smokies along with a variety of soft drinks.
