Winning Essays of the Sherel Nutt Memorial Scholarship

What Lake Springfield Means to Me By: Haley Jackson

Every June my family comes together to have a reunion. Different pigments of skin, different incomes, five generations- all gathered at Lake Springfield for impeccable food and some much needed catching up. I look at the lake. The water level seems higher than it was last year. Children shyly greet one another but become quickly acquainted. Soon they are darting between cousins and uncles, chasing one another long after they have run out of breath. Teenagers sit and discuss the endless possibilities of their future, and their exciting plans for the weekend. Dads are always standing around the grill, debating sports and sipping the adult beverages hiding in their koozies as if their life depended on it. Mothers follow around their toddlers frantically, and expecting mothers rub their big bellies and smile at what is to become. Grandparents have a table all to themselves,

gathered around the old family coffee maker. They have cup after cup of black coffee as dark as the summer mud. The grandparents spend the entire time flipping through numerous photo albums. Pages upon pages of baby pictures of people who are now grown and have babies of their own. Hundreds of family portraits displaying families as they once were before they changed, just as the seasons have.

After a while everyone is called together to eat. The options for food are endless. Homemade beef and noodles, baked beans, and did someone bring KFC? Mothers begin to exercise the word ‘no’ as the pleading for cookies before dinner grows louder through the line. Everyone sits and eats one plate, followed by another, and one more against your will. Once everyone is through gorging themselves on food, the entire scene begins to calm down. Mostly everyone is sitting and chatting, except the kids, who are busy trying to catch tadpoles in hopes they can watch them transform.

I wander off from the rest of the people and I stand on a boat dock. I slip my shoe off and dip a toe in the water. It feels strangely warm, like bath water. The wind blows. Hard. I feel a water droplet from the lake touch my sun kissed skin. Summer is halfway gone and I am growing older. Soon, I will be one of the adults at the reunion. The older adults that I know and love will grow older and frail and will eventually stop attending. All of these thoughts crowd my mind and my anxiety heightens. Another droplet hits me, it is bigger this time. I turn and look toward the pavilion and I see my entire family gathered for our annual photo. Five generations huddled together like we have done for years and will do for years to come. I look at water again, astounded by the changing of the lake through the years. I look back at my family, just as amazed.

“What Lake Springfield Means to Me” By Jamie Riedle

As I watch the fireworks explode their yellow and blue colors into the night sky, during the annual “Rock the Dock” extravaganza, I cannot help but notice the people around me. As I admire the disappearing lights from above, I see how the boats are silently bobbing up and down in the water. I see and hear the kids running on the lawn, and I can hear the muffled small talk of the adults. All the while hearing the big booms as the fireworks explode and echo off the trees; this what Lake Springfield means to me. It is the calm and familiar atmosphere that makes me feel safe and secure. When I think of Lake Springfield I think of home.

Every year I go to my Aunt’s and we watch the fireworks from her backyard. Family and friends are littered throughout the lawn sitting in lawn chairs or on blankets. Their faces glow with the color of the fireworks, and everyone is oohing and aahing. My little cousins laugh with excitement, while the adults watch with a content face. The gathering is the same every year, with the same people, food, and laughs. It is something I look forward to and something my family looks forward to every year.

I have grown up in Springfield and have been on the lake plenty of times. When I think of home I think of the street I grew up on, my school, the cool places to go around town, and the lake. All of those things have created memories for me that I have kept with me for the past eighteen years. I am proud to say I am from Springfield, Illinois. Some people think this place is too small and they cannot wait to leave. But to me it is home. Every time I pass over the dam and go into town I see the smokestacks. The familiar puffs of smoke exuding from the chimneys remind me of Springfield. As I cross the dam and I see the lake, it seems all too familiar. However, once I go off to college I will lose that familiarity. Once I leave I will miss the everyday reminders of home, especially the lake

Fishing on Fabulous Lake Springfield

by Larry Wedding THEY ARE BAAAAACK ( I hope and pray )! The White Bass, That Is !! As you know, from my past lamentations, my favorite fish the White Bass had all but disappeared in Lake Springfield. Due to some fish kills ( up to 5000 found ) and to major losses from escapements through the 5 open gates in Spaulding Dam, the wonderful White Bass population has been decimated for the past 2 plus years. My first hint of White Bass rejuvenation was on Mother's Day in early May. Lin Vautrain and her daughter Lauren, using my expert guide service, caught 8 fat and healthy Whites on "The Wire" at the hot ditch. This was the first decent catch I had seen for too many years. Subsequently, I caught 4 - 6 Whites at various times and several friends called me with similar results. Last Saturday AM, my favorite fish, really showed up. Bob Vautrain, his son Ben, and I left my dock at 5:30 and boated directly to the 9 foot flat just West of the Patton home. (We call this the farm house flat) We threw out a marker and circled until we hit the 12 foot depth and then the White Bass really showed us they were back. In less than 2 hours, we had 40 beautiful healthy White Bass. Bob and I returned Sunday AM and the Whites were everywhere in the same 12 foot area. We also witnessed

a huge " bust " that went on for at least 20 minutes. A " bust " is when a school of White Bass, and there must have been hundreds, push the schools of Gizzard Shad to the surface. When the Gizzard Shad are trapped at the surface with the Whites under them, the feeding frenzy begins and the water is alive with attacking Whites and panicked Shad. It is an exciting sight and you can catch a White on every cast, as they will attack any lure thrown at the school. Keeping only 8, we must have caught and released 50 White Bass. I have had several nice catches since: 12 on Monday and 20 on Tuesday. The Whites are running 12" to 14" and appear to be very healthy. They are a very strong fish, give you a great fight, and wow are they great to eat! Here's hoping they are here for many years to come. Please contact me with any of your fishing experiences or with any info on our fabulous Lake Springfield at 652-1223 or [email protected]

SLSIA NEWSLETTER JULY 2016 11

Summer has hit Springfield with full force and Lake Springfield is crowded with boats! Water sports and fireworks are two of the biggest pastimes for Fourth of July celebrations, and these are both linked to numerous deaths and injuries each year. Please review safe boating practices, observe no-wake zones and don’t drink and drive your boat. Alcohol consumption while operating boats or other motorized water vessels is illegal and you can be arrested for a BWI (boating under the influence!). Be sure that you have an adequate number of life preservers on hand for extra guests. You can borrow extra lake jackets at Lindsay Boat Launch. Never swim alone, and make sure that kids’ water play is adequately supervised at all times. Many children or adults can drown when other people are nearby, so always have a designated chaperone for water play and don’t assume that others are watching the kids. Statistics show that most young children who drown have been out of sight for less than five minutes. Alcohol consumption also increases the risk of accidental drowning. Protecting yourself in the heat is one of those topics that CWLP often calls 24/7 Safety. Everyone can use this information at home and on Lake Springfield. Statistics show that heat is the number one weather–related killer. Heat stress starts when your body can no longer cool itself properly. There are a variety of risk factors that make you susceptible:

• High temperature and humidity • Direct sun exposure (with no shade) • Indoor exposure to other sources of radiant the heat (ovens, furnaces) • Limited air movement (no breeze) • Low fluid consumption • Physical exertion • Heavy personal protective clothing and equipment • Poor physical condition or health problems • Some medications • Pregnancy • Lack of recent exposure to hot working conditions • Previous heat-related illness • Advanced age • Heavy sweating

Lake Leaseholder’s should learn to recognize the signs of Heat Stress in themselves and their guests. The first sign of heat stress is heat cramps. These are muscle pains caused by loss of salts and fluid. It is important to replace fluids. Drinking water or carbohydrate-electrolyte drinks (sport drinks) is appropriate to replace fluids. Do not take salt tablets. The next serious heat-related health problem is heat exhaustion. Symptoms include headache, nausea, irritability, thirst, heavy sweating and cold, clammy, damp skin. What You Should Do for Heat Exhaustion:

• Move to a cooler location. • Lie down and loosen your clothing. • Apply cool, wet cloths to as much of your body as possible. • Sip water.

If you have vomited and it continues, seek medical attention immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and the most serious heat-related health issue. Symptoms include confusion, possible loss of consciousness, hot, red, dry skin and very high body temperatures. What You Should Do for Heat Stroke:

• Call 911 immediately — this is a medical emergency. • Move the person to a cooler environment. • Reduce the person’s body temperature with cool cloths or even a bath. • Do NOT give fluids.
