Under Construction

W hile it is true that our renovation construc tion wil l b e spread out over the rest of 2016, we have b een in a

t ime of construc tion or renovation for much longer. We may think back to the last three years of intentional spir itual renovation as we set three -year goals to transform our church. Having these goals and doing so much intentional work c an b e exhausting for a church. I t ’s l ike having p eople renovating a p or tion of your house or even doing it yourself. There is an uncomfor table t ime when things are a mess. But you b el ieve in the future results, so you keep pressing for ward.

F or our church, I feel as though we are already reaping the joys of previous renovations. Yes, we are reaping

the joys of our 2011 Cornell Commons expansion but also the b enefits of our spir itual renovations and intentional church goals. This has given our church a zeal for b ecoming even b etter for one another, for the communit y, and for the purp oses of G o d ’s Kingdom.

W e wil l always b e under construc tion. O h, don’t worr y. We won’t always b e doing physic al renovations, but as

the p eople of G o d, we are always under the reconstruc tion and renovating work of the Holy Spir it . G o d has al l of us “under construc tion” unti l the last day we have to breathe. O n that day, we wil l f ind rest and the renewing joy of G o d ’s completed work up on us. O n that day, our baptism wil l b e complete. Unti l then, we wil l rol l up our s leeves and prepare ourselves for whatever Kingdom work G o d has for us to gether.

Ways to Serve and GiveJuly 16: Sanctuary CleaningPut Saturday, July 16, on your calendar! We will have a workday to do heavy cleaning in the Sanctuary from 8:30 am – 12:00 pm; please come for any length of time you can. Bring cleaning supplies with you… we will provide donuts and drinks. Also, we always need a soft eraser and a pencil sharpener. For more information call Jackie Bainter, 398-0294. ~ Worship Committee

July 23: Beacon 5K Run/Walk FUPC returns to Belleville West High School on Saturday, July 23, to defend our Beacon 5K participation title. The goal is to get 100 participants this year (we had 75 last year). Walkers make up the majority of the field, so lace ’em up and get on out there to support an amazing community ministry (and retain the trophy!). Start time is 8:00 am. Arrive about 7:30 am for a 7:45 team photo. Look for registration flyers in Cornell Commons. July 6 is the last day to register for Beacon 5K T-shirts. Pick up a registration form in the Commons or go to www.beacon5k.com.

Belleville Summer Sack Lunch ProgramYou can help answer the call to “feed the hungry” by providing nutritious lunches for children at risk of hunger in our community. Each Friday through August 12, we deliver 150 lunches to seven delivery sites located close to our public schools. How can you help? •  You can help pack lunches any Thursday evening starting at 6:00 pm through August 11. Meet in Eversull Hall. •  You can donate needed items: 100% juice boxes, cookies (no nuts), individual bags of chips, Ziploc sandwich bags, and cash donations. A labeled donation box can be found in Cornell Commons.•  You can help deliver lunches to children. If you’d like to help deliver, contact Abby Smith, Joyce and Dwight Lied, Norma Mason, or Nancy Kreeb. For more information, contact Nancy by email, [email protected].

Wonderful Ministry OpportunityOur church family now has another great opportunity to minister to one of us, the Dyer family. Sarah is in the last stage of acquiring her Doctorate degree which requires a yearlong internship. She will be located in Chicago five days a week and returning home on weekends. That means the Dyer family must cook for themselves in her absence. Wouldn’t it be great if we members delivered a home-cooked meal to the family one day a week? It appears that late every Tuesday afternoon would be the best day to provide our service, because lessons begin at 5:00 pm with some not getting home until 9:00. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, call Jan Dorris, 239-9248, or email [email protected], for more information and details.

Church stuff, faith stuff, Bible stuff, 80’s trivia, whatever!•  July 10: Reading the Bible with the PastorWe will read the entire Book of Colossians in class, and participants will be able to ask questions along the way. •  July 17: Biblical LanguagesCome learn a little about the original languages in which the Bible was written: Hebrew (Old Testament) and Greek (New Testament). •  July 24: Making Your Funeral MeaningfulJoin Pastor Rob for information on how you can make plans now to make your funeral meaningful and help your family members with advance planning. It may not be fun to think about, but it will help your family if you do. •  July 31: Dreaming Big for Our ChurchParticipants will share their dreams for our church’s future with the

pastor and hear about some of his crazy ideas.

Feasting on the Word Bible Study (Sundays)During July, join this group at 9:15 am on Sunday mornings in the Conference Room (200) as participants study different Bible passages.

Date Focus ScriptureJuly 3 Luke 10:1-11, 16-20July 10 Luke 10:25-27 July 17 Luke 10:38-42July 24 Luke 11:1-13July 31 Luke 12:13-21

Parent Class (Sundays)The Parent Class will meet during July at 9:15 am in the Library (102). Grab a cup of coffee and join the class discussion led by Leah and Shawn Lankford. All parents and grandparents are welcome!

July 4: Friends Dine OutOur dinner group will meet at O’Charley’s, 1313 Central Park Drive, O’Fallon, on Monday, July 4, at 6:00 pm. Dessert and fireworks will be at Marcia’s house after dinner. For more information, call Marcia Mellone, 398-9805, or Betty Bucknell, 397-2114.

July 13: Faith in FictionThe July selection is Washington: The Indespensable Man. This biography explores the father of our country, sometimes an unpopular hero, a man of great contradictions, but always a towering historical figure, who remains, as Flexner writes, ”a fallible human being made of flesh and blood and spirit, not a statue of marble and wood…a great and good man.” The book for August is Robert E. Lee by Emory Thomas. Join us at 9:00 am, July 13, in FirstXpression (202). Contact Susy Rybicki if you need information, 792-9458.

July 15: Merry Mates The July meeting will be an outing to the Gateway Grizzlies vs. Lake Erie Crushers game on Friday, July 15 (no meeting on July 8). If you made your reservation with Bob Samples, the tickets will be handed out that evening at 5:45 pm in the FUPC parking lot. The small church bus is available. However, it only holds 14 people, so some folks will need to carpool to the game. For more information, contact Bob Samples, 624-3340.

July 26: Potlucks with a PurposeAll women of the church are welcome to be a part of this unique Life Group that combines Fellowship, Food, and Fundraising just four times a year. If you think it might be something you would enjoy, why not give it

a try on Tuesday, July 26, at 6:30 pm in the Vista Room (206). Please use the Royal Heights Road entrance for convenient access to the room. Bring a potluck dish to share. It can be anything… salad, vegetable, meat, pasta, dessert, etc. A recipe that serves 8-10 is great! Also, bring your “dining-out-dollars” (what you might spend eating at a restaurant). All donations will be given to a project decided upon that evening. If you would like to know more about our group, contact Shirley Samples, 624-3340, or [email protected].

A Season of Increase - Hallelujah!

From the Mission Committee

Thank You All For Your Commitment and PrayerAs each of us reads through our Steeple and experiences what is happening in the life of First United, we see all the wonderful things God is doing through each of us and this church. From Sack Lunch Programs and Quilt Camps, to Youth Olympic Sundays and Children’s Chapel, we are working together as a church family for Kingdom purposes.

Lord, what do You want to do through me? As Pastor Rob mentioned in his sermon on June 12, “That’s a good question. That’s a good prayer.” Over the past several weeks, from Gratitude and Ministry Sundays in May, to our Celebration Sunday, the Day of Prayer and Commitment Sunday in June, together, we have all been encouraged to respond to this question and this prayer. The Capital Campaign is just one of so many examples in the life of

July: Caritas/St. John Bosco Fund RaiserThe Mission Committee will sponsor a fund raiser to benefit Caritas/St. John Bosco during July. Linsay Auerbach will be selling Buddy Clips by Scentsy, so look for the inserts in the Sunday bulletins.

July 30: Project Compassion NFP The third annual Girlz on Purpose Self-Esteem, Education & Character Tour will be held on Saturday, July 30, at Belleville West High School. This is a one-day tour for girls in grades 6 - 12 (ages 11-18) to navigate self-esteem, education, character discussions and activities in a fun, energizing and inspiring day. Project Compassion NFP expects to welcome over 200 girls from Belleville and surrounding communities. Your Mission Committee will have a table there to hand out bottled water with inspirational sayings on them, as well as other inspirational items and church brochures. Volunteers are needed to work at the table for three, three-hour shifts that day. There will be a sign-up table in Cornell Commons during the month of July.

Also for Project Compassion NFPTwo houses were donated to Project Compassion NFP, by different individuals! Both houses, one on either side of the current office, need renovations; volunteers are needed to complete the work by October 1. Look for more information soon.

September 17: International Mission FestivalThe IMF, planned for Saturday, September 17, will have a change in format this year. There will be a dinner but no Craft Fair. Instead, we have invited Hines Ugandan Ministries and Partners for Just Trade to sell their crafts at the evening dinner.

October 23 - 29: Adult Mission TripThe Mission Committee had to change the dates for this year’s adult

our church where the people of God have worked together to reach our goals and move our ministry and mission forward to where God is leading us.

This is truly a summer to celebrate all that God is doing through each of us and through First United Presbyterian Church. Here, it is a blessing to be part of the Kingdom purposes God is calling us to live out in our lives of faith. Thank you all for being part of this movement in our church, for your prayerful consideration, for your response to A Season of Increase Campaign, and in all the ways God is leading each of us to answer the question, Lord, what do You want to do through me? As of June 27, $1,012,881 has been pledged to our campaign. Hallelujah!~ Co-Campaign Leadership: Gigi and Roger Cox, Cyndi and Ed Langen

mission trip. We are still going to Kemmerer Village in Assumption, Illinois, about a two-hour drive from our church. KV is close enough that you can come for the day, if you cannot stay the entire week. Possible projects are: replace the roof on a single-story cottage; indoor painting in several buildings; lay noodle board over drywall in several bathrooms; install about 500 feet of wooden fence. If you might be interested, please mark these dates on your calendar and talk to Dwight Lied, [email protected], Andy Morgan, [email protected], or Chuck Thurig, [email protected].

Meet a Mission Co-Worker Rev. Ryan and Alethia White are another of the 13 mission worker teams supported by your Mission C o m m i t t e e . Since the Iranian Revolution of 1979, millions of Persian-speaking peoples have migrated to other parts of the Middle East, to the United States, Europe, and other areas of the world. The migration continues, and well over 100,000 Iranians have settled in Germany. The Iranian Presbyterian Church in Berlin, in addition to providing worship opportunities in Farsi, helps Iranian refugees and immigrants begin a new life in Germany. Ryan and Alethia White will work with the pastor and social worker of the congregation to offer pastoral care to those who are now making Germany their home. They will also collaborate with ecumenical partners to provide training and continuing education opportunities for leaders of the Presbyterian Church in Iran.

Visit the Mission CommitteeThe Mission Committee meets in the Conference Room (200) at 6:30 pm on the fourth Wednesday from January through October and on the third Wednesday in November and December. Our meetings are open to all. Come visit us!

Library LinesA big shout out to the Library Committee members, as well as to volunteers, Tom Bridges, Margaret Conaway and Jane Stafford, for packing 75 boxes of books and supplies for storage during the renovation of Eversull Hall and the Library. The Library is now closed until the renovation is completed. The book truck and magazine rack continue to have reading materials in the Commons.

Thanks for your support of the Library since it was organized in 1987 by Director, Inez Bridges.

Reminder Prayer Shawl Ministry will not meet in July.

Lose a Coffee Cup or Tumbler? Check the collection in the kitchenette by the Commons.

Update: Church Directory In spite of delays, our new church directory has been sent to production. The order should be here by the end of July.

Legacy Have you remembered First United in your will?

Church Man of the Year 2016

Welcome, Pat Olson!

Celebration Sunday

Each year for the past 20 years, as part of the National Presbyterian Men’s Ministry, the men of First United have elected a fellow member to be recognized as the Church Man of the Year. As the national citation states, this man is selected for his significant, vanguard leadership through his dedication, enthusiasm, commitment and imagination. (The award was presented by last year’s recipient, Danny Bainter.)

We welcome Patricia Olson as a new member of our staff at First United. Pat is our new Financial Secretary as of Monday, June 13. She will work weekday afternoons, 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm. Pat served in a similar position for several years at First Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Illinois. Prior to that, she has had experience as a legal secretary and a chief deputy county clerk. She currently works as an accounting assistant at St. Clair Associated Vocational Enterprises (SAVE) in Belleville during the mornings. Pat is very friendly and has a great deal of experience that will be a blessing to our church. Stop by and say hi to Pat! ~ Pastor Rob

On June 5, First United was blessed with exceptional Special Music as we concluded the year for the Music Department and gathered to celebrate the successful progress of A Season of Increase capital campaign.

This year’s recipient is or has been involved in all of the following ministries of the church: Trustees, President of the Board of Trustees, a key leader in the capital campaign that brought us Cornell Commons, Stewardship and Finance Committees, Parenting Class, organizer of the Sports Ministry, and star left fielder of the softball team. The 2016 Church Man of the Year is Brian Dulski.
