“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten bridesmaids who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish and five were wise. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep. At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ “Then all the bridesmaids woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ ‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves. But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The bridesmaids who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. (Matthew 25:1-13)

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church is a very unique family-size congregation that continues to keep its lamps burning with a great vision for the future. I am deeply encouraged by the strong spirit, resilience, and faithfulness of its committed members. Though Holy Trinity has its own difficulties and challenges like other institutions on this planet earth, Holy Trinity always strives for a brighter and better missional future and I am optimistic for that brighter and better future.

Keep the Lamps Burning at Holy Trinity!

Great things happened during the month of June 2014 in the missional life of Holy Trinity. Spiritually, Holy Trinity was alive and well with Holy Baptism and great Pentecost Sunday celebration, with reflections on the missional multicultural identity of Pentecost Sunday that re-shifted the missional outlook of Holy Trinity. On June 15, 2014, Holy Trinity celebrated Holy Trinity Sunday with a new vigor for its new name from St. Philip & St. Thomas to Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity Sunday worship service was a combined worship service of Father’s Day and Youth Sunday with focus on nurturing mutual and cordial family relationships within our Holy Trinity family. Financially, Holy Trinity was able to make current its financial obligations with ECMN and is encouraging the financial giving of parishioners and friends to keep the church financially strong and viable.

A part of the great happenings at Holy Trinity during the month of June 2014 was a meeting with the Board of Trustees of ECMN, which brought the discernment process to a successful ending, a significant achievement in the life of Holy Trinity. The successful ending of the discernment process or “Process with an End,” re-shifted the missional outlook of Holy Trinity from uncertainty to certainty, from pessimism to optimism, and from dying to living. The goal was to successfully end the discernment process that cast a dark cloud over the missional future of Holy Trinity for a very long time.

Choir News – There will be no choir rehearsals for the summer. Next rehearsal will be on Wednesday, September 3, 2014. In lieu of summer rehearsals, we will have a brief music check and sing through of new material before services on Sunday mornings, between 10:30 a.m. and 10:55 a.m.

“Come and Follow Me” Vacation Spiritual Week (VSW), July 28 – August 2, 2014

Jesus called out, "Come, follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!" (Matthew 4:19)

Our deepest longing is for God and Truth. The invitation to follow Jesus leads to God and Truth. Young children are a vital part of the invitation to follow Jesus. Young people need to spend more time contemplating on God and Truth. Truth leads to sanity and clear thinking. Holy Trinity parents are encouraged to send their children/youth of any age to a Vacation Spiritual Week (VSW) to work on their spiritual journey. We will focus on the Christian practices required to follow Jesus.

We will meet at the Church from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. during the week of July 28 to August 2, 2014. Please let us know if you are able to help with snacks, etc. Parents are invited to join us and transport their children/youth.

Ice Cream Social

Our 4th annual Ice Cream Social will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2014, from noon to 3 p.m. All are welcome! We will be distributing flyers and inviting the community. Mark your calendars, and plan to come out and enjoy some fellowship and ice cream!

Keep the Lamps Burning at Holy Trinity, continued from page 1

I am grateful to God, the hard work of Holy Trinity members, the Core Team, and the Missional Team of ECMN for the incredible missional partnership and collaboration that were put into the Process with an End. The outcome was an outstanding missional vision for Holy Trinity that raises missional awareness about the mark of God’s Mission, the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the needs within its missional context in Minneapolis and St. Paul, missional possibilities, and concludes with recommendations. Holy Trinity intends to implement these missional goals. Now with the end of the discernment process and the setting of missional goals, the home church location has become an issue. This is the responsibility of the Vestry, Building and Grounds Committee, the Congregation, and the Board of Trustees of the ECMN. This time around, I’ve decided to stay away from the home church location search process. I do trust the process; glad God has brought Holy Trinity this far, and positive that Holy Trinity is heading in the right direction. I want to encourage a spirit of oneness and collaboration in keeping with the meaning of our name, Holy Trinity. God has blessed Holy Trinity with many gifts and talents. The God who has brought Holy Trinity this far will see us through. All that we need to do now is to keep the lamps at Holy Trinity burning. Keep the lamps burning! Fr. James N. Wilson, II

Womansong Penumbra Theatre Company, premier stage for African American Drama, was founded in 1976 (as was the Guild of the Black Madonna) as a venue for the African-American presence in the Twin City area. Penumbra Theatre Summer Institute presents a three year training program, art can change the world, training the next generation of activist artists. The program offers full and partial scholarships, college experience involving University of Minnesota Department of Theatre and Arts, professional interaction and support, including transportation assistance, snacks and auditions. This summer’s events include an original ensemble featuring a chorus of insightful and brave stories on Saturday, August 2, at 7:00 p.m. Powerful monologues and scenes performed by the second year class, followed by a discussion with the ensemble on Saturday, August 9, at 7:00 p.m. The third event takes place as a three-day festival of new work by the third-year students, a different experience each evening designed to enlighten, challenge and inspire, on Friday, August 15, Saturday, August 16 and Sunday, August 17, at 7:00 p.m. Alexandria and Hunter Reeve, children of our parish are enrolled in this Summer Institute and the Sunday, August 17 evening features Hunter Reeve. I am excited about this artistic event because I remember by mother singing to us (my sisters and I) as we drove home Sunday evenings. I also can “hear” my great-grandmother singing “He walks with me” as a young girl, emotions and feelings reflected in song.

Ordination: Being Present to God's Holy Presence

Dear Friends, Sitting in the beautiful Kellogg room, we talked about how important it was to be present to the Presence, even amidst all the distractions around us. On "grace-filled cue", at that very moment, a very large truck came by and filled the room with noise. I, of course, took full advantage and said, "There will always be a lot of noise around us - we are called to be present to God's Presence." A few short hours later, "cloistered" away from the joyous ruckus that was going on just down the hallway, we spent most of our time in quiet, at times silence. As we ended our final prayers, I once again invited them to be present to the moment that was to take place, and to hold holy silence. Standing now some 100 feet behind a gregarious group of clergy, all those behind me were not distracted by the noise, but rather present to God's presence and all that was before them. Holy moments can often be lost on all sorts of details and distractions. It is so easy to get caught up in what cries the loudest for our attention, rather than staying focused on the small, quiet voice that calls our name. Through the years, many a clergy have confessed to me that Sunday morning worship is anything but that; they often end up feeling more like an event organizer, rather than the one to invite the gathered to prayer. Yet, for our incredible 16 newly ordained, even amidst the full gamut of their own emotions and surrounded by the sweet sounds of anxiously awaiting family and friends, they were present to God's Holy Presence; an experience I pray that will carry them forward as they go forth to a world filled with noise and distractions from that small quiet voice calling their names.
