THE July 2014

Immanuel Lutheran

Immanuel Lutheran Church 255 South Seventh Street, Salina, KS 67401

As I was looking for something to write about, I came across a letter on facebook from a woman who was struggling with wearing her cleric (pastor’s shirt) on a daily basis. She did not know if the cleric would start conversations or end them. My first thought was to have more interesting clerics made since I have had a number of conversations with people I do not know because of what I was wearing. Up to this point of her ministry, she has not worn a cleric because she didn’t want to come across as being one of those stuffy pastors who expect people to look up to her because she is a pastor. I do have to agree that there are pastors who are like that, but it has more to do with the person than the shirt. This lady is in a new call where the congregation expects her to be in the community somewhere between 40 to 50% of the time. So she was wondering how other clergy spend time in the community without being or coming off as being stuffy especially if they wear a cleric. She does bring up an important concern. How do we, as Christians, interact with our communities without shutting off conversations before they even begin? To plant seeds of faith, we must interact with those around us but we must do that in a way where we do not put others down or where we do not think that we are better than others. To begin with, we are all created by the same God which means one is not better than another. We are also called to a life of service where we lift up and support one another to the best of our ability. In doing so, we try to treat one another with respect. We also invite others to come and join us. It doesn’t matter if the invitation is for worship, work or fellowship because we invite others to experience God with us. In Christ, Pastor Kent

TEACH US TO PRAY Please make note of the Prayer Ventures for July. You can find them at http://www.elca.org/What-We-Believe/Prayer-Center/Prayer-Ventures-2.aspx. A sample of the first five days is printed here. A printed version of the entire month of July is available at church. These petitions are offered as guides to prayer for the global, social and outreach ministries of the church. Thank you for your continued prayers for the life and mission of this church.

1 Pray for our companion church the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Central African Republic and its work with Lutheran Disaster Response to provide planting tools and seeds for people whose harvests have been affected by the violence and unrest in the country.

2 Pray with the leaders of this church that a political solution will be found for peace in the Holy Land. Pray that Israeli and Palestinian leaders will reach an agreement in which the citizens of both nations can live in freedom and security. 3 Remember in your prayers ELCA missionaries in Cameroon Anne and Willie Langdji, who are the regional representatives for Western Africa. 4 Independence Day On this Independence Day, we give thanks for the courage of those who signed the Declaration of Independence and we pray that our government leaders today will honor that courage with thoughtful and visionary leadership.

5 Pray that the summer months will be a time of outreach for ELCA congregations. Lift up the efforts of your congregation to become a presence in the community as it extends its welcome to your neighbors, as Resurrection Lutheran Church in Chicago does with its annual Wrigleyville Summerfest.

Property Ministry Team: Work on roof will start on 6-10-14 weather permitting. Team did not meet but are looking for a bid on taking down glass over stained glass windows. We have set up an account with Sherwin Williams. (since the date of the council meeting, work on the roof has been completed). Mission Ministry Team: Are making preparations for Hot Times, getting permits, planning activities. The team set up a meeting Sunday, June 15 for people interested in visiting shut-ins. Memorial Ministry Team: Blossom Augustine’s memorial funds are designated for drapes in the lounge. Jennifer Goates & Vicki Augustine will meet to discuss options.

Roof Project The roof has been completed and the repairs look good. We thank Jeremy for going up into the attic and taking some pictures of the repairs from the inside. The downspout from the tower to the roof has also been replaced so the water should now drain as it was designed.

“… for you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I sing for joy.” Psalm 63:7

A Call to Worship, A Call to Proclaim

A bell symbolizes the call to worship, reflected in the ringing of bells in many churches to announce or open the worship service. A bell also symbolizes the proclamation of the gospel to the world: hence, the ringing of church bells at the close of some services as worshipers depart to spread Christ's good news in their daily lives.

PARISH NURSE So, How many of you, like me, attended the River Fest…and got the first summer sunburn? Even though I had on spf 60 sunscreen, sat in the shade, I still got quite a burn. As we enter our hot moths here are some sun safety tips.

Shade-you can reduce your risk of skin damage and skin cancer by seeking shade under a tree, umbrella or other shelter AND wear sunscreen!

Clothing-Loose fitting long sleeved shirts and long pants provide the best protection. A dry t-shirt offers much more protection than a wet one. Darker colors are better than light ones, so choose your wardrobe carefully. Shirts with SPF (skin protection factor) are becoming more available and more affordable. A typical t-shirt provides approximately SPF 15.

Hats-for the best protection wear a hat with a brim all the way around that shades your face, ears and the back of your neck. Canvas is best as straw hats have holes that let the sun shine through. Sunglasses-Protect your eyes and reduce the risk of cataracts, as well as protecting the tender skin areas around your eyes. Wrap-around sunglasses are best for UV blocking.

Sunscreen-make this a priority, even on cloudy days. Making this a part of your morning routine is the best thing to do…everyday! Remember if you are in the water, or spending a long time outdoors (over 2 hours you need to reapply your sunscreen). Many cosmetics have chemical sunscreen in them so this may help out the ladies. Sunscreens come as either “chemical” sunscreens-what we see the most in the stores. These are good, but there are certain people who cannot use these due to allergy (me being one of them-there is nothing much worse than being sunburned and having the hives at the same time!) Physical sun blocks-contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide- but

are much better than those zinc oxide of old as the particle size is smaller and you don’t look “white” in them. In reality, these are the best for your skin as they reflect, scatter and block the sun’s rays, where the chemical ones absorb the sun’s rays so your wrinkle prevention is not as effective!

Limit time in the sun during the times when the sun is most intense-10a-2p

Hopefully this will help you decide how to best protect yourself and others. Have a great summer!

Thank you for all the Birthday wishes, as well as the get well wishes when I was in the hospital! What a great family we have!

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 21:6

Stewardship Stewardship is not a program, not a fad, not a fundraising gimmick. It is an invitation to those who want to live out their baptismal call. Stewardship is an invitation to put our life totally in God’s hands. No longer can our faith be simply our Sunday morning requirement because it is more than volunteering or donating a few extra dollars to a noble cause. It is a conversion of the heart, a mindset that leads a person to live a conscious, committed life to Christ. Our Stewardship emphasis began on June 29th and we will continue it on July 6th and 13th. You will then have a week to prayerfully consider your promise to God in regards to what you are planning on giving back as part of your ministry before turning in your pledge card on the 20th. As a reminder, what you give as a pledge is between you and God. As pastor, I DO NOT look at your pledge.

Children’s Worship bags Chenille craft stems (pipe cleaners) are a popular item for the children's worship bags. Any and all colors are needed. If you would like to donate a package, please leave them in the church office.

Thank you!

ELCA MALARIA CAMPAIGN Congratulations to the Weird Animals VBS participants who collected $61.39 for the ELCA Malaria Campaign! Their donations helped us exceed our goal of $1,000!

Contact Info Update

In this age of greater technology, more and more of us are using cell phones to do just about everything. We call, text and even receive emails on our phones. Some of us have dropped our land lines altogether and gone strictly with cell phones. In an effort to keep the church records updated and to facilitate communication between the church and members, the church office asks that you take a moment to be sure the office has your most current info on phone (both landlines and cell), email and address if you have moved recently. Also if you are a recent new member the church may need important dates: birthday, wedding day, baptism and confirmation dates for parents & children.
