There is so much going on at your Chamber this year Idon’t know where to begin...

If you are looking for a way to get involved, network with other businessmembers, or want to know more about what your Chamber can do for you, please read on…

We began a new Division of the Chamber this year for LeadershipDevelopment and they have been busy making plans and holding events toacquaint members with what this committe is all about. We have hosted threeEmerge Albany events with attendance rising each month. This young professionalgroup of the Chamber is clamoring to learn, network and get more involved intheir community. Now we are excited to announce that Countney Spencer, theChamber’s new Member Relations Coordinator, will also be the staff liason forEmerge. We hosted the kick-off event for the Chamber’s new leadership programon May 10th as we hosted the Chick fil A Leadercast in conjunction with DartonState College. This all day event was attended by over 100 participants and each

person walked away with a feeling of competence and new knowledge based on how to be thatperson/leader that will move their business/community forward.

As you may recall, one of my goals for the year is to build a community spirit and to be inclusive. One ofthe ways we have chosen to do that is by inviting members of government leadership, educational leaders, andour Marine Base to come to our board meetings and share great things that are happening. The response hasbeen very positive from our community leaders and our board.

And what a celebration we threw for Small Business during Small Business Week May 20-24th! The additionof an evening Small Business Celebration on May 16th kicked-off the festivities with the naming of our SmallBusiness of the Year, A. West Enterprise and the Stewbo’s Enterprises as runner-up. The Chamber also heldthree Lunch & Learns each geared toward helping small businesses thrive.

As you can see committees have been hard at work and the year is off to a great start. Come be a part ofyour Chamber at one or all of the events we offer and take advantage of your chamber membership!

Great VolunteersEmily Jean McAfeeL i f e t i m e S e r v i c e Aw a r d

You'll have to forgive Emily Jean McAfee if she's a littleuncomfortable in the spotlight. When you give a lifetime ofservice to your community with no expectation of reward,front-and-center's not exactly where you feel mostcomfortable. But there will be no detractors who would deny McAfee,

selected as the Albany Area Chamber of Commerce's thirdLifetime Service Award winner, her rightful place alongsideprevious winners Lamar Reese and Sherman Willis."This is very humbling; it's comforting to know folks have

been paying attention over the years," McAfee said. "I've justalways believed in trying to leave things a little better than Ifound them. I believe in trying to find the good things aboutAlbany and working to make them better. That's kind of mylegacy."McAfee joined the ranks of Chamber Lifetime Service

recipients at a reception in January. Also at the reception,Liberty House was recognized as the Chamber's Not-for-Profit of the Year.Born and raised in Albany and educated in the local

public school system, McAfee has spent most of her life —save for her college days at the University of Georgia andher travels — working to make her hometown a better placeto live. She started her career of service by helping establisha school volunteer program that would eventually become apart of the United Way.But McAfee says her desire to help others is as much

hereditary as it is self-motivation."A lot of my leadership spirit is in my genetic

background," the current acting director of the FlintRiverQuarium said. "My family has always believed in beinggood stewards of whatever was available to them and ingiving back. And they always did it in a non-flag-wavingway."If they had money to give, that was fine. If they didn't,

they gave their time. I'm part of a family that's always felteveryone was put on Earth to do good. If you don't; if youhave an opportunity to help others and you pass it up ...well, I'm just sorry for you."McAfee has held only one political office in her years of

service, elected to three terms on the Dougherty CountySchool System's School Board. But she's been an ever-present part of groups and organizations whose purpose iscommunity betterment. Among the many causes she'ssupported over the years are Girls Incorporated, United Way,

Albany Tomorrow, the Thronateeska Heritage Foundation, leading fundraising efforts to build the YMCA Sports Park,Andrew College (in nearby Cuthbert), NeighborhoodKitchen, spearheading efforts to restore the historic AlbanyMunicipal Auditorium and, of course, the RiverQuarium. When financial difficulties threatened the downtown

attraction, McAfee, who is on the RiverQuarium's board ofdirectors, took on the challenge of directing the facility on avolunteer basis."I'm hoping the people in this community recognize what

an asset the RiverQuarium is to us and will rally to ourcause. I believe we have a bright future, if we can just getthere."Asked if there are particular standout moments or regrets

from her years of service, McAfee is temporarily at a loss. But after a couple of beats to think the question over, sheoffers the perfect response."Honestly, all of them are so important, to single out one

or the other would be a disservice," she said. "Anything I didover the years was something I did while absorbed in themoment."Everything wasn't a piece of cake, by any means. But I

tend not to dwell on the negative. I've always been a prettyoptimistic person."

Haryl DabneyAm b a s s a d o r o f t h e Ye a rHaryl Dabney says his Albany Rocks!!! He was raised in a single

parent home with his mother, Carlette Moore and older brotherDarius Moore. He learned two things from his mother -- how to behard working and have integrity. “Things weren’t just given to us, wehad to earn them,” Haryl stated. His grandparents, Ted and KatieFagan, truly gave him his first job. “We worked in their yard to earnmovie and skating ring money…now that’s manual labor,” Haryl said. Haryl attended Westover Comprehensive High School, where he

played football, was in the band, and TSA, FCCLA, FBLA, and SkillsVICA USA. Rumor was that he developed his own school newspapercalled “The Informer.” His path changed along the way and he thenattended Albany Technical College where he earned his G.E.D. andtook classes in Information Technology at ATC. Haryl currently wears a lot of hats in the community. He serves on

the DoCo Library Board, YMCA 21st CLCC Board, Ambassador for theChamber, Youth Advocate Leadership and a host of other things. “Mygoal is to simply start rebuilding the community that I love so dearly,”stated Haryl. In 2013 Haryl was selected as one of Albany’s 40 UnderForty and also asked to participate in the 2013-2014 LeadershipAlbany Class.Haryl currently works for L2Networks as public relations manager.

He attends Berachah Fellowship Chuch and has one daughter,Aubrie, who he hopes will be afforded the same great opportunitiesand blessings that Albany provided for him.

Great IndustriesEconomic Impact: Procter & Gamble

There are few places around the globe thatdon’t feel the impact of Procter & Gamble, the largest

consumer-goods company in the world. And there are few placesthat feel the company’s impact as do its host communities, Albany amongthem.“P&G understands the impact we have on the community and its citizens,

it understands how important Southwest Georgia is to the Albany Site and toProcter & Gamble,” said Albany Plant Manager Fidel Torres. Procter & Gamble’s Albany Paper Products Co. was established inDecember 1972 on 490 acres. Today, the plant employs 777, contractsanother 200-plus, and pumps $1 billion annually into the Georgiaeconomy. Locally, the Albany plant has a net positive impact of $300million. In fact, for every one P&G job, another 3.9 non-P&G jobs arecreated.

Excellence in Innovation: MillerCoorsMillerCoors is known for doing a few things really well, namely brewing

beer. But at the Albany brewery, just as much effort goes into ensuring theplant runs as green as possible.“Our customers, suppliers, vendors and employees all demand good,

sound, green business practices,” said Albany brewery manager Tim Dill. “Itreduces our carbon footprint by minimizing raw materials used andeliminating waste.”Some of the innovative steps the facility has taken include using the

breakthrough technology of ionic air rinsers, which save water; using cool-roof reflective coating, which reduces heat load and saves energy; andhydroxyl sanitizing, which replaces chlorinated water sprays and reduceschlorine corrosion. Leadership has replaced keg room refrigeration unitswith lower ozone-depleting fluorescent fixtures, and replaced older high-energy, high-mercury lamps with new high-bay fluorescent fixtures. “Our brewery is in the front of our industry with green innovations such

as ionized air rinsing, hydroxyl sanitation and reflective roofing,” said Dill.

Good Life City Award for Corporate Community Citizenship: MarsChocolate North AmericaFor family-owned Mars Chocolate North America, the corporate culture

means pitching in family style and giving back at every opportunity.“We have at least 90 percent participation for any event,” said Kelvin

Graham, who retired as plant manager of the Albany Mars facility in April. The Albany plant produces Combos, Kudos, Snickers and peanut M&Ms. It should come as no surprise, then, that when approached in 2006 about

partnering to create an Albany marathon, Mars jumped right in.The Albany Marathon powered by Snickers® is an event that transcends

the community. It brings in thousands of runners and their families everyMarch, creating exposure for the community in a market previously untapped.“It promotes Albany and our brand,” Graham said of the event.Mars’ other community involvement includes Habitat for Humanity, Relay

for Life, National Sports Youth Program, American Cancer Society, SecondHarvest Food Bank. Mars is also a partner, with Albany Technical College, inan apprenticeship program and a Partner in Excellence at Alice CoachmanElementary School. The Albany-Dougherty Economic Development Commission's annual

After the husband/wife teamof Angie and Eddie West hadestablished their A. WestEnterprise electrical contractingbusiness "in a horse barn in thebackyard," Eddie West calledup some of the contacts he'dmade during his 15 or so yearsin the business. Most of the people West

talked with were supportive, offering encouragement andadvice. But there was one callthat went a little differently, onethat impacts West to this day."We'd landed a few jobs, so I

was feeling pretty good aboutour prospects," West said. "Butthis individual in Jacksonville(Florida), when he found outwhat we were doing, he said,'You've got more (guts) thanyou do brains.' Every morningnow when I get up, that's oneof the first things I think of, andI know I've got to hit theground running."Following that simple

principle — and all the on-the-job training Eddie West learnedfrom one of the South's bestelectrical superintendents, JerryBurns, and all the businesssavvy Angie West picked upfrom her father, H.J. Williams— the Wests have turned theirlittle two-person, backyardbusiness into one of the South'smost respected electricalcontracting operations, one thatnow employs 43.The excellence that has

become the trademark of A.West Enterprise was rewardedby the Albany Area Chamber of

Commerce recently when thecompany was named theChamber's Small Business ofthe Year."That's really the highlight of

what we've done over the lastfour years; (the award) put thecherry on top of everythingwe've accomplished," EddieWest said. "We started abusiness at maybe the worstpossible time, but by 'raising'all of our own people we'vedeveloped a system that wethink works."We take our time and teach

our employees, who are usuallyvery young and from this area,to do things our way. It's theirdedication to professionalism, customer satisfaction, qualityand safety that has allowed usto thrive despite the economy."Following close behind A.

West Enterprise for the covetedtitle of Business of the Year wasStewbos Enterprises whogarnered the title of runner-up.Other finalists were ComnetTechnical Solutions (CTSI),BreakAway Cycles, Verge, OurDaily Bread, and BJ's Buffetand Bakery. While Eddie West was

serving in the U.S. Air Forceand stationed at Kirkland AirForce Base in Albuquerque,New Mexico, his father-in-law,who was president of JLMalone & Associates at thetime, asked West if he'd everthought about going throughan electrician apprenticeshipprogram. West hadn't, butthinking he might consider it as

an option once his service hitch was up, he took nightcourses at a vocational school in New Mexico. When he left the Air Force, West apprenticed with JL

Malone, soaking up everything Burns had to teach him. Westfinished his apprenticeship in Ohio, and was asked a shortwhile later (by Williams) if he'd ever considered furtheringhis education in college. The Albany High School graduatereturned home and started his college career at DartonCollege. Two years later he earned a degree from Marietta'sSouthern Polytechnic Institute. After graduating in '94, West worked for eight years with

Malone, then six more with Metro Power."The thing was that I kept hitting the glass ceiling at those

places," he said. "When Angie's dad passed away in 2007, Italked with her and her family about the possibility ofopening our own business. It was the worst economic time, but they knew what I wanted to do. So we decided to give ita shot."While Eddie West is the backbone of the A. West

Enterprise electrical staff, wife Angie controls the operation."Angie's not here in the office day-in and day-out, but she

is 100 percent the owner," West said of his wife. "She is trulythe conscience of this company."A. West Enterprise's phenomenal growth has centered

around its commitment to professionalism at reasonablecost. The company has completed work all over theSoutheastern United States, including projects as far south as

Jupiter, Florida and as far north as the Barkley Dam alongthe Cumberland River in Kentucky. Much of its current workis ongoing in Albany, but some of A. West's most high-profile projects have been at Albany State University,Clemson University, Georgia Tech, Florida A&M University,West Georgia University, the Marine Corps Logistics Base inAlbany and at the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention in Atlanta.Even with its now in-demand status, West commented

that A. West Enterprise is doing fine at its 705 Canal Street

location in Albany."This is, after all, home for Angie and me," he said. "I've

found that the same opportunities are here — actually, thereare better opportunities here — that there would be in anylarger city. I went to Europe while I was in the Air Force andtraveled a lot in this country during my apprenticeship. We're fine here in Albany."We feel like we've developed a pretty good recipe to

keep everyone in our company happy."Restaurateurs Bo Henry and Stewart Campbell are the

familiar — and popular — faces behind Stewbos' successfulbusinesses: Harvest Moon, The Catch, Henry Campbell's andthe Merry Acres Inn & Event Center, which also includes theManor House Pub. But the young guns who make theirbusinesses go have a secret weapon whose behind-the-scenes work is also vital: third partner David Campbell."I'm the guy in the background, mostly just telling Bo and

Stewart what I did wrong so they don't make the same

mistakes," David Campbell laughed. "I think this companyhas done well, though, because we all play very differentroles. Stewart has a valuable background in equipmentdesign, and Bo is the ultimate out-front guy. As Stewart says,'He knows everybody south of Macon.'"It's a combination that works, but the company's biggest

asset is probably all the folks on the Stewbos team. What wetry to do well is work hard to make sure we have the rightpeople on our bus."The female-owned CTSI provides information technology

outsourcing solutions to government and private-sectorclients; Breakaway Cycles introduces its growing customerbase to the lifestyle of cycling; Our Daily Bread is a family-owned "farm-to-fork" restaurant; BJ's Buffet & Bakery is acommunity-oriented restaurant whose owner's primary focusis local jobs; and Verge is an upscale consignment boutiquein the heart of Albany's downtown business district.

Silke Deeley has been executivedirector of Liberty House for a decade

now, and as she and the organization'sadvocates work to provide basic needs for

victims of domestic violence, she said she repeats constantly hermantra: "You can't work harder than your client.""That's something that's true of all nonprofits," Deeley, who was

born in Germany and moved to Chicago with her family when shewas 8, said. "What we try to do at Liberty House is engage our clients, encourage them to take the necessary steps to regain control of theirlives. Their participation is crucial; after all, it's their lives."This kind of work is so rewarding, but there are days when you

come home and just stand in the shower and cry."Liberty House serves domestic abuse victims — primarily women

and children — in a 17-county Southwest Georgia area, doing"everything we need to do to assist the victims of domestic violenceand their children."That "everything" includes providing, at least temporarily, basic

needs such as food, clothing and shelter. And as clients transition outof Liberty House's 21-bed shelter, where staff helps them establish andwork to achieve non-mandatory goals and objectives, needed healthservices, medication and funding for past-due bills and utility depositsare often provided."You really have to pick your battles," Deeley said. "Some clients are

so traumatized, they can't function in a setting so removed from whatthey've grown accustomed to. We try to provide counseling andmental health services, but it's too hard for some to adhere to ourcode of conduct."Since our shelter has space for only 21 beds, the maximum

number of clients we directly serve in a year is generally around 200.But we offer the same services in the region, minus the shelter, to asmany as 800 to 1,000 clients a year."Deeley said Liberty House's 12 employees are the true community

heroes."I'm so proud of our advocates; they're the ones out there in the

field putting their lives on the line," she said. "Their jobs are so muchtougher because there is very little sympathy or empathy for victims."Deeley said Liberty House's funding is provided through the United

Way, state and federal grants anddonations from local churches and civicorganizations."We can always use money," she said.

"But the paper and other products thatyou use ever day, we use a lot more of.Food that restaurants plan to throw awayat the end of the day ... those kinds of in-kind donations are always important to us."At Liberty House we advocate for

victims in the community, but we're notjust about those victims. I think agencieslike ours play a vital role in thecommunity. Despite what many think, domestic violence does not just impactpoor black and Latino women. It reachesacross all socio-economic and culturalgroups. No one has control over whetherthey are abused."

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT/CEOWe Are Adding Benefit To Your MembershipChambers of Commerce are essential to economic growth in all communities; through making

introductions, facilitating projects, maintaining critical economic data, keeping abreast of pendingdevelopment projects, and most of all providing valuable resources to help members businessessucceed. In these tough economic times, all that is not enough. Chambers now have to ensuretheir members understand the return on investment of Chamber membership as it can be easilyoverlooked during cost-cutting times.

The first solution to a lagging membership and member retention is reassessing how theChamber provides value for its membership. Gone are the days when a business would join justbecause they are new to the area and need to make connections, though those reasons still doexist they are not their sole purpose. Many current members do not have either the time availableor see the value in attending many Chamber related events. That is why it is critical for us toconstantly add to our already existing value added programs and services.

By now you have heard the many benefits to being a member of the Albany Area Chamber ofCommerce, the question is are you taking advantage of them? Did you know we have a special discount program only forChamber members through Office Depot? Did you know we have a brand newwebsite that provides your business with additional exposure and visibility? Did you know you can post an open position atyour business free of charge on the Chamber website? Did you know by being a member of the Chamber you can receiveup to a 12% discount on ANY business insurance policy including liability, worker’s compensation and commercial vehicle?

I see every day many of our members advertising with our local media partners. Did you know that by being a memberof our Chamber you can receive discounted advertising rates through all our media partners including WALB, WFXL,WSWG, Clear Channel Radio, Cumulus Radio and the Albany Herald? We are even adding another added value program forour members.
