COVER STORY—continued from page 1

digital divide, or the gap between those with regular, effective access to digital technology and those without, is becoming an increasingly critical problem in society. As more and more information becomes electronic, the inability to get online can leave entire communities at an extremely dangerous disadvantage.

Sadly, San Francisco’s digital divide falls along similar racial and social fault lines which characterize so many of society’s issues. White households are twice as likely to have home Internet access as African American houses. Bayview Hunters Point, Crocker Amazon, Chinatown, Visitacion Valley, and the Tenderloin communities have significantly lower rates of home technology use than the rest of the city. Sixty-six percent of Latinos report having a home computer, as opposed to 88 percent of Caucasians.

Through community outreach programs such as workshops and after school programs, BGC introduces underprivileged girls to basic programming skills in languages like Scratch and Ruby on Rails. Introducing young black girls to these skills gives them an introduction to today’s computer technology, an essential tool for surviving in the 21st century. The skills they acquire through the programs give these young women a chance at well-paying professions with prestigious companies, as well as the ability to enter into the field as an entrepreneurs and leaders of technology.

“Imagine. Build. Create.” has always been the motto at BlackGirlsCode. The digital divide is steadily eroding, but if all want to create truly universal access to technology, San Francisco needs to come together as a community. Imagine a world where everyone is given the tools to succeed, and then help us build ways for everyone to access information and create a new age of women of color in technology. bt

Bowie State University Hosts BDPA Regional Summit and STEM Camps for Youth

Bowie, MD—Fifteen high school students are learning how to build robots and create mobile apps during the 4th annual CPU Computer Camp for African-American Boys at Bowie State University.

For the first time, the camp – started by Dr. Daryl Stone, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science – received a grant from the Mid-Atlantic Consortium-Center for Academic Excellence, which is providing $10,000 each year for five years to support the cost of BSU undergraduate

and graduate students who work as camp counselors.

Eight more students are learning computer programming in a complementary “Girls Who Will” camp for girls, under the direction of Dr. Quincy Brown, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science. Students with the best projects were awarded Best Buy Gift Cards from BDPA-DC.

Dr. Stone said his work on his dissertation prompted him to start the CPU Camp. In an examination of “clogs” in the pipeline of African-American males entering science, technology, engineering, and technology (STEM) fields, he found that educators need to introduce African-American boys to STEM fields in middle and high school to make a significant difference.

Often, because African American students aren’t introduced to the possibilities in STEM careers until college, they may not have taken the most challenging math and science classes or taken their class seriously, which limits their opportunities in STEM careers, he said.

“What we try to let them know is that there’s a big gap in the number of jobs available in STEM and the number of people who are majoring in STEM,” Dr. Stone said.

Not only do the male campers learn about STEM fields, they also participate in lessons twice a week on what it means to be a man, like a recent session on managing a household budget.

The camp has yielded positive outcomes. Three past participants are in college now, and two are studying in STEM fields, Dr. Stone said. Last year, 26 out of 30 participants said in post-camp surveys that they would consider applying to Bowie State. The BSU camp counselors are also getting a lot out of the experience. Kourtney Ramseur, a BSU senior in computer technology, said one of her favorite lessons was when a Microsoft-certified professional showed them how to create an app that notifies the user of a new post on a blog. “Really, this is all new to me. I’m learning right along with them,” she said.

Justin Edwards, BSU senior in computer technology, also sees the impact of the camp on the high school participants. “It sparks something inside of them. As camp counselors, we’re telling them about the experiences we faced in college and giving them the idea that you need to be focused when you get here.” bt

Columbus, OH—Ten elementary school teams participated in Techieloka, a

technology competition for students in TECH CORPS’ TECHie Club program. “Loka” is the Sanskrit word for “world; therefore, “techieloka” means techie world.

Held at Tech Columbus, it was an exciting and competitive event where students presented their projects on different computing and engineering topics to a cadre of technology savvy judges.

This year’s winning team, Miss Waters, consisted of three girls from the South High Branch Library TECHie Club. Dionnie Harris (5th grade), Heidi Kondrath (3rd grade), and Piper Hoyt (3rd grade) represented their club proudly with their environmentally friendly, robotic trash collector.

Winning team members received approximately $1000 worth of prizes for their achievement.

In addition to the elementary school teams, three high school teams from the TECH CORPS/NSBE Jr. Chapter also displayed their programmable logic controller (PLC) projects that students programmed, tested, and debugged. bt

About XSEDE12 | July 16-20 Chicago, IL – Much as XSEDE replaces and extends TeraGrid as the largest NSF-funded provider of advanced cyberinfrastructure services for the U.S. open research community, XSEDE12 builds on the successful series of TeraGrid conferences. XSEDE Principal Investigator John Towns said, "This conference series has evolved into an important meeting focused on the needs of the community supported by XSEDE, and it will cover a breadth of scientific, technical, and social aspects of cyberinfrastructure."

BDPA’s IT Showcase students have regularly attended above mentioned TeraGrid conferences. Dr. Jesse Bemley, lead executive of Washington-based JEF (Joint Educational Facilities,) encourages more student member participation from BDPA Chapters and CS-STEM affiliates.

The XSEDE12 conference includes the most successful and popular aspects of the previous TeraGrid conferences:

• tutorials on the first day of the conference

• excellent keynote and plenary speakers from within and beyond the computational science community

• special aspects of the program for students and Campus Champions

• a visualization showcase, poster sessions, and excellent technical sessions.

XSEDE12 also plans to include new features:

• technical sessions focused on software, including software vendors discussing their products relative to the XSEDE environment, software engineering for XSEDE, and challenges of delivering and using commercial software in the XSEDE environment

• a cybercafe near the conference area, so participants can get online easily during breaks

Washington, D.C. –The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) announced last month that a supercomputer called Sequoia at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) is ranked the world's most powerful computing system.

Clocking in at 16.32 sustained petaflops (quadrillion floating point operations per second), Sequoia earned the No. 1 ranking on the industry standard Top500 list of the world's fastest supercomputers released Monday, June 18, at the International Supercomputing Conference (ISC12) in Hamburg, Germany. Sequoia was built for NNSA by IBM.

A 96-rack IBM Blue Gene/Q system, Sequoia will enable simulations that explore phenomena at a level of detail never before possible. Sequoia is dedicated to NNSA's Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program for stewardship of the nation's nuclear weapons stockpile, a joint effort from LLNL, Los Alamos National Laboratory and Sandia National Laboratories.

"Computing platforms like Sequoia help the United States keep its nuclear stockpile safe, secure and effective without the need for underground testing," NNSA Administrator Thomas D'Agostino said. "While Sequoia may be the fastest, the underlying computing capabilities it provides give us increased confidence in the nation's nuclear deterrent as the weapons stockpile changes under treaty agreements, a critical part of President Obama's nuclear security agenda. Sequoia also represents continued American leadership in high performance computing, key to the technology innovation that drives high-quality jobs and economic prosperity."

"Sequoia will provide a more complete understanding of weapons performance, notably hydrodynamics and properties of materials at extreme pressures and temperatures. In particular, the system will enable suites of highly resolved uncertainty quantification calculations to support the effort to extend the life of aging weapons systems; what we call a life extension program (LEP)," said Bob Meisner, NNSA director of the ASC program.

Sequoia, continued on page 16

Sequoia, continued from page 15

Uncertainty quantification, or "UQ," is the quantitative characterization and reduction of uncertainty in computer applications through running very large suites of calculations to characterize the effects of minor differences in the systems. Sources of uncertainty are rife in the natural sciences and engineering fields. UQ uses statistical methods to determine likely outcomes.

The machine will be an important tool used to support stockpile life extension programs, including the B61 and the W78. By reducing the time required for these studies, total costs also are reduced. In addition, the machine is expected to enhance NNSA's ability to sustain the stockpile by resolving any significant findings in weapons systems, bringing greater power to the annual assessment of the stockpile, and anticipating and avoiding future problems that inevitably result from aging. All of this helps to ensure that the nation will never have to return to nuclear testing.

Supercomputers such as Sequoia have allowed the United States to have confidence in its nuclear weapons stockpile over the 20 years since nuclear testing ended in 1992. The insight that comes from supercomputing simulations also is vital to addressing nonproliferation and counterterrorism issues as well as informing other national security decisions such as nuclear weapon policy and treaty agreements. "Sequoia is an exciting achievement for the POWER architecture, not just for its speed and energy efficiency, but also for the important and complex work it can support to safeguard the nation's nuclear stockpile," said Colin Parris, general manager IBM Power Systems. "With supercomputers capable of 16 sustained petaflops, our ability to affect strategic change in areas like life sciences, public safety, energy and transportation that make our world smarter is greater than ever. The improvements in affordability, performance, efficiency and size that Sequoia delivers will also enable a broader set of commercial customers to implement HPC for their competitive advantage."

The NNSA/LLNL/IBM partnership has produced six HPC systems that have been ranked among the world's most powerful computers including: The Accelerated Strategic Computing Initiative (ASCI) Blue Pacific; ASCI White; the Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) Purple; Blue Gene/L; Blue Gene/P; and Blue Gene/Q, Sequoia. ASCI White, Blue Gene/L and now Sequoia all attained a No. 1 ranking on the Top500 list. Sequoia is primarily water cooled and consists of 96 racks; 98,304 compute nodes; 1.6 million cores; and 1.6 petabytes of memory. Though orders of magnitude more powerful than such predecessor systems as ASC Purple and Blue Gene/L, Sequoia will roughly be 90 times more power efficient than Purple and about eight times more than BG/L relative to the peak speeds of these systems. Source: LLNL.gov bt Established by Congress in 2000, NNSA is a semi-autonomous agency within the U.S. Department of Energy responsible for enhancing national security through the military application of nuclear science. NNSA maintains and enhances the safety, security, reliability and performance of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without nuclear testing; works to reduce global danger from weapons of mass destruction; provides the U.S. Navy with safe and effective nuclear propulsion; and responds to nuclear and radiological emergencies in CONUS and abroad.

Minority Business Development Agency

The Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. MBDA is the only federal agency created specifically to foster the establishment and growth of minority-owned businesses in America.

MBDA is an entrepreneurially focused organization committed to wealth creation in minority communities to foster the growth and global competitiveness of U.S. businesses that are minority-owned.

MBDA actively coordinates and leverages public and private-sector resources that facilitate strategic alliances in support of its mission. MBDA’s vision is economic prosperity for all American business enterprises.

MBDA Helps Grow Minority Businesses

MBDA provides funding for a network of Minority business centers located throughout the Nation. The Centers

provide minority entrepreneurs with one-on-one assistance in writing business plans, marketing, management and technical assistance and financial planning to assure adequate financing for business ventures.

The Centers are staffed by business specialists who have the knowledge and practical experience needed to run successful and profitable businesses. Business referral services are provided free of charge. However, the network generally charges nominal fees for specific management and technical assistance services.

MBDA Has Over 40 Business Development Centers

The Centers are located in areas with the largest concentration of minority populations and the largest number of minority businesses. bt Source: http://www.mbda.gov
