Oldies at Rabs Country Lanes.
Ben Currao rolled 269, Dotty
Bellantoni 234, Phil Pistilli 216,
and Anthony Giberto 212.
Dawn Burst shot 226 and Joanne

RENO, Nev. - Lisa Friscioni of
Saddle Brook, N.J., and Kathleen
Weissman of Fair Lawn, N.J., com-
peted against each other collegiate-
ly but joined forces this week at the
2014 United States Bowling
Congress Women's
Championships, where they coast-
ed into the Division 1 Doubles lead.
Weissman, a 30-year-old right-
hander, led the way with games of
205, 267 and 238 for a 710 series,
and Friscioni, a 29-year-old right-
hander, added 194, 267 and 228 for
a 689 set and 1,399 doubles total.
Jan Schmidt of Hales Corners,
Wis., and Sarah Germano of
Rochester, N.Y., previously held the top spot with 1,311.
"It was tough because we started off slow the first
game," said Friscioni, who made her eighth USBC
Women's Championships appearance. "The lanes
played a little different from yesterday. We had a great
second game, and that's what really got us going."
Friscioni and Weissman's team event was broadcast
live on BowlTV. After putting themselves in a spot to
make a run at the Diamond Division lead, the team
struggled in the final game, eventually helping Time of
Our Life settle into eighth place with 2,442. Lusha's
Ladies of Frisco, Texas, lead with 2,651.
The pair learned from the mistakes they made in their
team event and worked harder as a team during doubles
and singles at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.
"I felt like we had more motivation today after not
bowling well the last game in team," said Weissman,
who made her seventh Women's Championships
appearance. "We talked it over and had much better
communication as a team
today. That was the key."
Friscioni was a member
the 2006 NCAA national
championship-winning
team at Fairleigh Dickinson
University and earned the
tournament's Most Valuable
Player honor. Weissman
helped New Jersey City
University to a third-place
finish at the 2004 NCAA
National Championship.
After graduating, they
began to bowl locally
together, and the 2014
event marked their first
time competing together as doubles partners.
"We competed a lot against each other," said
Friscioni, who also helped FDU to the 2010 NCAA
national championship as an assistant coach. "We
moved into the same area after graduation and began to
team up in the same leagues. Collegiate bowling was a
great experience, and this tournament gives us a chance
to get together with all of our friends."
Friscioni added sets of 709 in team and 644 in singles
to finish her 2014 tournament with a 2,042 all-events
total, which places her second in Division 1 All-Events
behind the 2,074 of three-time Women's
Championships titlist Joey Biondo of Carpentersville,
Ill. Weissman finished with 617 in singles and 595 in
team for 1,922.
Bowlers competing in Division 1 have entering aver-
ages of 190 and above. Teams competing in the
Diamond Division have combined entering averages of
725 and above.

2 SPORTS REPORTER July 2 - 8, 2014
RENO, Nev. - Even with a half game to go, there was little doubt Artistic
Expressions 1 of Oklahoma City was going to finish the day atop the stand-
ings at the 2014 United States Bowling Congress Open Championships with
the highest score in 111 years of tournament history.
ArtisticExpressions1OC2014at465x262.jpgThe only question being
asked at the National Bowling Stadium was how high the bar would be
raised. The group answered with a 1,277 final game and 3,720 team tally,
159 pins better than Motion Plus Lanes of Cudahy, Wis., which previously
held the lead and top spot in the record books with 3,561.
Artistic Expressions 1 started the team event with games of 1,255 and
1,188 before closing with the sixth-highest game in USBC Open
Championships competition. Team Turbo Grips of Fort Wayne, Ind., owns
the single-game record of 1,318, rolled just three days earlier.
"We knew that if we worked together, eventually this was going to hap-
pen," said Pete Thomas, who is the veteran of the team with 16 tournament
appearances. "We practiced on the shot this morning, we practiced a few
times during the week and we put in the work. We made some good deci-
sions and great ball choices. Before we started, I told them it was an honor
to bowl with them. I knew it would be something special. But this special?
No one could have predicted that."
Ted Pritts led the way for Artistic Expressions 1 on Monday with a 768
series and was followed by Thomas (758), Xeno Garcia (752), Jimmy
McMartin (736) and Anthony Lavery-Spahr (706).
"It's just an amazing feeling," Pritts said. "To be a part of something so
special is a testament to my teammates and the things we were able to do.
For it all to come together for us is incredible. If somebody beats it, we'll all
fly out here and shake their hands."
"It's like a dream come true," Thomas said. "To know that we've done
something that no other team has done at Nationals, and by more than 100
pins, is beyond belief. We're excited for what the future holds. This team will
be together for a long time, will continue to be humble about it and be excit-
ed for what's going to happen in the next few weeks."
Murphy first joined the
International Bowling Campus
(IBC) in 2010 as Director of Youth
for the Bowling Proprietors
Association of America (BPAA).
He became IBC Director of Youth
Development in 2011 at which
time he assumed management of
USBC youth programs as well. In
January of 2012, Murphy earned
promotion to IBC Managing
Director of Youth Development.
Bowling is far more than a pro-
fession for me. It is part of my
family, my fabric and who I am,
Murphy said. My focus and pas-
sion has been serving the sport of
bowling since I joined the campus.
I am honored to take on this new
role for USBC and help lead our
National Governing Body and
membership organization for-
ward.
Prior to joining the IBC, Murphy
held management positions at
Columbia Industries and Ebonite.
Earlier in his career, he worked as
a team member on the
Professional Bowlers Association
and Professional Womens
Bowling Association tours for
Columbia 300. He is a former
member of Team USA and his
playing honors include a silver
medal at the 1998 World Tenpin
Team Cup in Amsterdam and he
was also part of the Ebonite
Nitro/R's team that won two
Grand Championships at the
Brunswick World Team Challenge
Series in 1994 and 1996.
The International Bowling
Campus will conduct a search for
new Managing Director of IBC
Youth Development with USBC
and BPAA Executive Directors
collaborating on the selection.
Murphy will continue to supervise
IBC Youth Development until a
new leader for the department is
named.

Tom Baker Wins PBA50
Northern California ClassicBy Jerry Schneider - PBABRENTWOOD, Calif. Tom Baker of King, N.C., survived a champi-
onship match battle of Professional Bowlers Association Hall of Famers
to win the PBA50 Northern California Classic presented by MOTIV for
his 11th career PBA50 Tour title.
Baker, a four-time PBA50 Player of the Year, defeated fellow Hall of
Famer and PBA50 Tour rookie Parker Bohn III of Jackson, N.J., 290-
245, in the title match at Harvest Park Bowl which was also his first win
of the season. In the first six tournaments of the 2014 PBA50 Tour sea-
son each has been won by a PBA Hall of Famer.
The whole day I had to rely on my equipment, said the 59-year-old
Baker who also owns 10 PBA Tour titles. I must have used five or six
balls today and the ball I used in the championship match I didnt even
use all day.
I was pretty fortunate to be able to bowl for the title, he continued.
In the round of 16 I was down 2-0 and had to battle back to win the next
three games to pull it out. I was having a lot of trouble leaving 10 pins
on really good shots so it got pretty frustrating.
Ironically Baker avenged a championship match loss to Bohn in the
Brentwood Classic PBA Tour tournament in 1998 where Bohn beat
Baker 239-222 for the title.
We were talking about that and the one thing I remember about that
match is I left a big split that cost me a chance to win the tournament,
Baker said. Naturally I was hoping history wasnt going to repeat itself.
With his win, Baker moves into a tie for fourth on the PBA50 Tour
career titles list with Gene Stus. John Handegard leads with 14 career titles
with Gary Dickinson and Dale Eagle tied for second with 12 titles each.
In the semifinal round, Baker advanced to the championship match by
defeating Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli, 228-195, and Bohn defeat-
ed five-time PBA Tour winner Eric Forkel of Las Vegas, 242-198. Bohn
and Monacelli were trying for their second titles of the season while
Forkel was trying for his first career PBA50 Tour title.
Two-time defending champion Walter Ray Williams Jr.s quest for a
third consecutive Northern California Classic win was thwarted with a
2-0 defeat in the round-of-8 best-of-three match against Forkel earlier in
the day.PBA TO RETURN TO GRAND CASINO RESORT,
FIRELAKE BOWLING CENTER
FOR 2015 SUMMER SWINGThe Professional Bowlers Association and Citizen Potawatomi
Nation have reached agreement to return to Shawnee, Okla., for the
third annual PBA Summer Swing in 2015. Dates and other details have
yet to be finalized, but the announcement that the PBA will return to
Oklahoma was made during the Grand Casino Resort PBA Summer
Swing finals by Citizen Potawatomi Nation Chairman John (Rocky)
Barrett.
It is expected the 2015 program will be similar to the 2014 Summer
Swing, with preliminary rounds held at FireLake Bowling Center (also
operated by the Grand Casino Resort group) with finals held on a spe-
cial lane installation in the Grand Event Center in the Grand Casino
Resort and Hotel complex.
The PBA is very happy to renew our relationship with the Citizen
Potawatomi Nation and Grand Casino Resort group, said PBA
Commissioner Tom Clark. The 2014 event was a terrific experience.
Our hosts could not have been more accommodating. FireLake is a
great facility for our preliminary rounds, and the Grand Event Center
provided us with a terrific setting for the finals. We couldnt be happi-
er. Its great news for the PBA and our members to know a full year in
advance that were coming back to Oklahoma.

6 SPORTS REPORTER July 2 - 8, 2014
SEATTLE The Professional
Bowlers Association has created
a new PBA Womens Regional
Tour program that will begin in
July and culminate at the PBA
World Series of Bowling VI in
Las Vegas this fall.
The PBA Womens Regional
Tour will provide women
bowlers with opportunities to
compete against other women in
the same kind of affordable,
close-to-home tournament struc-
ture that has given thousands of
male bowlers an opportunity to
develop their skills since the
PBA introduced its regional pro-
gram 1969.
Women bowlers have been
without a formal tournament
structure for too long,
Commissioner Tom Clark said.
The PBA took steps to address
that problem when we introduced
the PBA Womens Series in
2007. The program was suspend-
ed after three seasons, but we
have always wanted to provide
women with a place to compete.
This new program is a step in
that direction. Our sincere hope
is that it will evolve into some-
thing more substantial in the
future.
The PBA has allowed women
to bowl with and against their
male counterparts since 2004,
and a number of women bowl in
PBA Tour, PBA Regional and
PBA50 events each year. Eight
women have won PBA Regional
Tour titles. Kelly Kulick of
Union, N.J., made history when
she won the 2010 PBA
Tournament of Champions.
Under the new program, six
PBA Regional programs (East,
South, Central, Midwest,
Southwest and West/Northwest
combined) will each conduct
three events that will be designat-
ed as PBAW competition points
events (see schedule below).
Women will bowl with and
against their male counterparts,
but there will be specific prizes
and benefits for women only,
similar to the cashing system for
super seniors who bowl in
PBA50 tournaments. The tourna-
ments will not diminish PBA
Regional prize funds in any way,
but at least one woman will cash
for $250 in each tournament if a
woman doesnt cash in the regu-
lar prize list. Additional cash
prizes will be paid based upon
the number of women entered.
In each designated event, com-
petition points will be awarded
based upon how the women fin-
ish. The leader in competition
points in each of the six pro-
grams will receive a paid entry
into PBA World Series of
Bowling VI at South Point
Bowling Center in Las Vegas
Oct. 24-Nov. 2, and the six
regional qualifiers will compete
in a special six-game, round
robin Champions Challenge
Match Play round on Oct. 24.
The top two women from the
match play round will compete
for the PBA Womens Regional
Finals title.
Womens entry fees for region-
al events will be the same as for
men: $220 for members or $285
for non-members. Non-members
are welcome for all PBAW
events, but only PBA members
will earn points and be eligible
for the paid WSOB entries.
Complete details about all PBA
Regional tournaments are avail-
able on pba.com under the
Schedule menu (click on
Regional Tour and then the
appropriate region link to find
details about each tournament).
