Allison Nichols, Deb Waarvik, Ruth Waarvik and RodKarst went on an 18 day journey to the United Kingdom.

The rst week involved three days in London, England,

one day in Paris, France, and three days in Edinburgh,

Scotland. A 10-day tour of Western Scotland was

mainly focused on the Isle of Mull. Their days were

lled with castles, cathedrals, museums and even a

few pubs (all that touring can make one thirsty!). Theitour guides happened to be musicians so the evenings

were topped off with wonderful folk music from Scotland

and Ireland. They’re all back home now as the ladies

made sure that Rod would be back in time to announce

the play-by-play action on KLTZ  this evening at 5:30 as

the Glasgow Reds take on the Lewistown Redbirds.

Montana Fish, Wildlie & Parks removed two youngbighorn rams ound commingling with domestic sheep lastweek. Te bighorns were 28 miles south o Malta, well awayrom their normal habitat. Te meat was donated to localamilies, and the horns will be used or educational purposes.  Te two rams were ound on private land along BeaverCreek in southern Phillips County. Tey were 22 miles

rom established populations in hunting district 622 in theMissouri River Breaks, and 25 miles rom populations inthe Little Rockies in hunting district 620. Neighbors alertedFWP about the rams afer observing them in close proximityto domestic sheep, including within an enclosed pen. With landowner permission to access the property, FWP’sMalta area Wildlie Biologist Scott Tompson removed thebighorns on June 24.  “Bighorn sheep are managed pretty intensively,” saidTompson. “o keep a healthy population o bighornsheep, more aggressive management may be used at times.Sometimes, that can mean removing bighorns that pose a

health risk to the rest o the population.”  Pneumonia and other respiratory diseases in wild sheepare known to sometimes be transmitted by bacteria carriedand tolerated by domestic sheep. Tere are currently nodomestic sheep near established bighorn sheep populationsin Region 6.  “It is not out o the question or young rams to wanderoutside their typical habitat, as they did here, and comein contact with domestic sheep,” Tompson said. “Tisscenario is more likely when bighorn sheep populations areat higher levels, as is currently the case with some Missouri

Breaks bighorn sheep herds.”Last May, the Fish & Wildlie Commission approveda proposal to establish a “commingling managementarea” or the Missouri River Breaks population o bighornsheep. Tat management action established boundaries tohelp prevent the possibility o commingling and diseasetransmission between wild and domestic sheep. Te twobighorns removed last week were within the comminglingmanagement area, which encompasses land well outsideo bighorn sheep habitat and in areas domestic sheep areknown to occur. Wild sheep that wander into the exclusionzone can be removed by FWP to prevent the possibility o

disease transmission rom domestic herds back to existingwild bighorn populations.  issue samples were taken rom the two rams, totest or respiratory diseases and determine overall health“Populations o bighorn sheep in our area are doing excellent,”said Tompson. “However, wild sheep have a high risk ormajor die-offs due to disease. Other bighorn population

across the state have had respiratory disease issues leading todie-offs o all age classes within the herd. We strive to keepour herds as healthy as we can to prevent this.”  Tompson noted that disease in bighorn sheeppopulations is a serious issue in other areas o the state. In theendoy Mountains near Lima, or instance, there are plansto remove the entire herd, and later restock it with healthybighorns. Other recent bighorn sheep die offs resulted inthe closure o hunting district 122 near Plains and huntingdistrict 305 near Gardiner until the herds there recover.

“FWP appreciates when landowners, neighbors, andrecreationist let us know when they see wild and domesticsheep in close proximity,” said Quentin Kujala, FWP WildlieManagement Section Chie in Helena. “Without early noticethis incidence may have gone undetected. Te managementarea concept maintains wildlie populations along withdifferent land uses and really needs everybody’s participationto succeed.”

It doesn’t get any weirder than this. he Universityo North Dakota is currently seeking to replace theFighting Sioux nickname it’s had since 1930 since itwas orced to abandon it because o the NCAA’s ban onNative American mascots.  Meanwhile, about 600 miles to the southeast o GrandForks is Chicago, Illinois, where on Monday, June 15, the

National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks capturedtheir third Stanley Cup in the past six years. Although theyare somewhat different but not by very much, the ormerUniversity o North Dakota Fighting Sioux mascot and theBlackhawk mascot, a profile o an Indian head, they areessentially the same. In one state they’re saying it’s racistwhile in the other they are celebrating it with parties, paradesand hauling the Cup to a Chicago Cubs baseball game. Tenon the very next night, uesday, June 16, the Golden StateWarriors deeated the Cleveland Cavaliers to capture its firstNational Basketball League championship in 40 years. Samething: celebrating with a parade and parties.  Don’t kid yoursel, Warriors translates into NativeAmerican Indian. Beore their move to San Francisco in1962 and eventually to Oakland, the Golden State Warriorswere the Philadelphia Warriors and their mascot logo was amale Indian dribbling a basketball with his lef hand.  Again, how is one considered racist while the other isnot? Earlier this spring a guest on Te Sports Cage (CKRM620 AM, 4:07-6:30 p.m. MD, M-F) said it best: “No sportsteam is ever going to come up with and use a nickname thatis going to embarrass themselves.”  When the University o North Dakota was looking or a

new mascot 85 years ago it settled on Fighting Sioux because1) Sioux were a good exterminating agent or Bison (read thatas North Dakota State University Bison o Fargo, its in-staterival a ew hours south on I-29); 2) Sioux are warlike, o finephysique and bearing; 3) Te word Sioux is easily rhymed oryells and songs.  Do you really think the University o North Dakotawould choose a nickname to be a slap in the ace o NativeAmericans? It seems UND chose that name as a way ohonoring the Sioux, particularly those that ought to thedeath or their land and traditions. Guess the politicallycorrect crowd needs something to do these days to be the

Meanwhile, deep down inside the politically correct rabbit hole o sports

best do-gooders they can possibly be!  By the way, the seven finalists or the new UNDnickname are Fighting Hawks, Green Hawks, NodaksNorth Dakota (Te University o North Dakota NorthDakota?????), North Stars, Roughriders and Sundogs. TeNoDaks and Roughriders sound cool, but not as cool asFighting Sioux ! ~ Mike, Daniels County Leader
