GoingIt's Origins Award time again. The

final ballot for the game industry's "Os-cars" has been prepared; the nominees arelisted on page 39. Every year when awardtime comes around we hear accusationsthat the system is "stacked" toward thebig companies (or the little ones, or theold ones, or the historical ones . . . ). SoI did a little analysis of the nominations.I've compared the number of nomina-tions each company received with thatcompany's total number of 1981 releases.(For data on releases, I'm indebted toDana Lombardy, who graciously gavepermission for me to reprint informationhe tabulated and presented in Issue 9 ofthe Proceedings of the Awards Commit-tee, Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts& Design.)

(The following companies had one nomi-nation each, from unknown, but presum-ably very small, numbers of 1981 re-leases: Empire Games, Adventure Games,and Quarterdeck Games.)

"R" is that company's total 1981releases, as tabulated by Dana Lombardy."GN" is new game nominations; I did notcount "All-Time Best" nominations be-cause these are not limited to 1981 re-leases. (I also did not count magazinenominations, since this would give anunfair advantage to the companies thathave magazines. But note that TSR andAvalon Hill both get "on the board" ifAll-Time Best and magazine nominationsare counted.) Computer games were alsonot included. "%" is the ratio of nomi-nations to total releases.

These results were very interestingindeed. There is no strong correlationbetween size of company and numberof nominations; SPI (a giant, at least in1981) and Chaosium (medium-sized) aretied for greatest number of new gamenominations. But the companies with thebest percentage of nominations are SJGames, Chaosium, and Mayfair — allmedium to small operations. Further-more, some of the biggest companiesdidn't make it at all with their 1981releases. TSR had 16 swings and nohits. Judges Guild was 0 for 19! EvenAvalon Hill went 0 for 7 this year.And other large operations only madeit by the skin of their teeth; Yaquintowent 1 for 13, Metagaming 1 for 15.Most of the other "name" companies

picked up one nomination each, withGDW getting four and FASA two.

Conclusion number one: The nomi-nation process is pretty fair. Since it'sopen to the public, and nominationballots are run in most gaming maga-zines, everybody who wants to has achance to vote, and nominations arelikely to fall, as they should, to the morepopular new games. (It's always possibleto stuff the ballot box — and companieshave blatantly done so in past years —but it's hard to do this without beingobvious about it.)

Conclusion number two: If the nomi-nation process is fair, then it presents agood picture of what garners like — andthat tells us something about the effec-tiveness of the game companies. It seemsto me to be saying "smaller is better."Most of the big companies cranked outlots and lots of games .. . and earnedvery few if any nominations! Of course,many of the little companies had equallybad batting averages — but the ones thatdid well, did very well. A game mill can'tmatch the output of a design team thatcares.

Recommendation: Let's find out howto have the best of both worlds. Imaginea game company with the resources andproduction of TSR ... and the consistentquality of Chaosium. Wouldn't that besomething?

Nominations

The Space Gamer has once again beennominated for Best Magazine CoveringRole-Playing Games. We'd sure like toturn that nomination into an award thistime; cross your fingers for us. Our sistermagazine, Fire & Movement, picked up anomination for Best Magazine CoveringBoardgaming — an award it's won for thelast three years in a row.

On the game award front, we seem tohave done pretty well; SJ Games releasedthree new games in 1981, and got threenominations. Car Wars has been nomi-nated for two awards: Best MiniaturesRules and Best Science Fiction BoardGame. Undead was nominated as Best
