THE CATHOLIC COMMUNITY OF PLEASANTON
OUR MISSION: “To know Christ better, live as He calls us to live, and make Him better known”.
JULY 19, 2015 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Pastor’s Corner My brothers and sisters, Over the past weeks a number of people have been talking with me about being tired…pooped…in need of a booster shot. I know that’s the case with me -- how about you? Perhaps we have been thinking of an eagerly anticipated vacation. Or we are in need of a break and should start planning one! Either way, the Scripture is clear. Even God rested on the 7th day. So if God needs to take a break, don’t we all?! Over the last weeks, Fr. Michael has been on vacation. Fr. Leonard has had some weeks off, too. Fr. Lee is enjoying time away from ministry as I write this. I’m off on vacation from this Monday (20 July) till the end of the month. I’m going to Sea Ranch (Cliffs of Northern California above Jenner) with friends to do nothing but enjoy the time in quiet peace. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to just pray and be still with only the music of the water against the cliffs as accompaniment. To immerse myself in stillness and peace… Once upon a time my vacations were about “sight-seeing,” and of course, there is a time and place for

that, too. Till about five years ago, my “Type A” personality dictated my so-called rest. I planned my rest! When you think about it…isn’t that a contradiction? In my vacation planning days, I knew that I had to be at a certain place at a certain hour with certain people and that it had to end at a certain time! It had to end because I had to be at another event on my so-called vacation. Because there was another hour, with other people and at a certain time. What I have come to appreciate is that vacation was just more of the same. In the end, vacation was a continuation of my routine. Do we need to schedule vacation time? Of course! Otherwise…that needed time away will never happen. And with kids it’s imperative to schedule. I get that too. But what a gift to be able to sometimes say, “I have nothing planned in this grace-filled time but rest”. That’s what God did on the 7th day. Sharing with our kids that not every moment of vacation has to be scheduled—that sometimes vacation is just about spending time together. No agenda…no schedule…nothing else but the family together. In the end, that’s what is important. This year let vacation be a gift of freedom from the calendar. Let’s stop the planning and scheduling to allow body, mind and spirit to refuel. I pray for you every day as your pastor. It’s my joy and my duty and a first matter of my heart. And I will be praying for all of you while I am on vacation. But apart from that, I’m leaving the parish behind. Why? Because we all need to rest on the 7th day. I pray that your Summer goes well and that you too get away with family or friends and enjoy some stillness and peace. See you in August!

Scripture Readings July 26 2 Kings 4:42-44 John 6:1-15 Ephesians 4:1-6
Thank You On behalf of my family, I want to express to you my thanks for the inexhaustible prayers offered for my cousin Fred who passed unexpectedly and for my father, Charlie, who suffered a heart attack and had been in hospital last week. He’s home!!! The support and encouragement of the prayer warriors, medical team, friends and the kind stranger is ample reminder of God’s goodness alive in His people. The Minnihan family is ever thankful…. Fr. Paul
Ignatian Companions Engage Your Spirit Through Service To Others
Companions in Ignatian Service and Spirituality is a program that engages women and men, retired and semi-retired, who desire to serve those most marginalized in our communities while deepening their spiritual foundations. An endorsed work of the Western Province of the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), our 10-month program operates from September-June each year and is hosted by the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley.
Join us for an Information Session at St Elizabeth Seton Church, at 7:00 PM, Wednesday, July 29. For more information, contact Jenny Girard Malley, Director, at [email protected] or (415) 375-0622 or go to www.ignatiancompanions.org
