Today Readings: Isaiah 44:6-8 6“This is what the LORD says—Israel‟s King and Re-

deemer, the LORD Almighty: I am the first and I am

the last; apart from me there is no God. 7Who then

is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and

lay out before me what has happened since I es-

tablished my ancient people, and what is yet to

come— yes, let him foretell what will come. 8Do

not tremble, do not be afraid. Did I not proclaim

this and foretell it long ago? You are my witnesses.

Is there any God besides me? No, there is no other

Rock; I know not one.”

Romans 8:18-27 18I consider that our present sufferings are not

worth comparing with the glory that will be re-

vealed in us. 19The creation waits in eager expec-

tation for the sons of God to be revealed. 20For the

creation was subjected to frustration, not by its

own choice, but by the will of the one who sub-

jected it, in hope 21that the creation itself will be

liberated from its bondage to decay and brought

into the glorious freedom of the children of God. 22We know that the whole creation has been

groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to

the present time. 23Not only so, but we ourselves,

who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly

as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the

redemption of our bodies. 24For in this hope we

were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all.

Who hopes for what he already has? 25But if we

hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it

patiently. 26In the same way, the Spirit helps us in

our weakness. We do not know what we ought to

pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with

groans that words cannot express. 27And he who

searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit,

because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in ac-

cordance with God‟s will.

Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43 24Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom

of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in

his field. 25But while everyone was sleeping, his en-

emy came and sowed weeds among the wheat,

and went away. 26When the wheat sprouted and

formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. 27“The owner‟s servants came to him and said, „Sir,

didn‟t you sow good seed in your field? Where

then did the weeds come from?‟ 28“„An enemy did

this,‟ he replied. “The servants asked him, „Do you

want us to go and pull them up?‟ 29“„No,‟ he an-

swered, „because while you are pulling the weeds,

you may root up the wheat with them. 30Let both

grow together until the harvest. At that time I will

tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie

them in bundles to be burned; then gather the

wheat and bring it into my barn.‟”

36Then he left the crowd and went into the house.

His disciples came to him and said, “Explain to us

the parable of the weeds in the field.” 37He an-

swered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the

Son of Man. 38The field is the world, and the good

seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The

weeds are the sons of the evil one, 39and the en-

emy who sows them is the devil. The harvest is the

end of the age, and the harvesters are angels. 40“As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the

fire, so it will be at the end of the age. 41The Son of

Man will send out his angels, and they will weed

out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and

all who do evil. 42They will throw them into the fiery

furnace, where there will be weeping and gnash-

ing of teeth. 43Then the righteous will shine like the

sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has

ears, let him hear.

Confession: The celebration of Holy Communion is a very special time for the Christian community. We believe it is important to know what the Bible teaches about the Lord’s Supper and what it is we, by faith, truly receive. The benefits are pointed out by the words: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.” These words assure us that in the Sacrament we receive, by faith, forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. “For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.” Believing that in the Sacrament, Jesus Christ bestows upon us His true body and blood for the forgiveness of sin, (Matthew 26:28), and assuring us of eter-nal life, (John 6:54-56) we acknowledge and accept our re-sponsibility to live for Him. If you are visiting and wish to receive Holy Communion and share faith in Jesus truly pre-sent here, we welcome you. If you are uncertain or have a different confession, we invite you to consult 1 Corinthians 11:23-29 and speak to the Pastor or an Elder to learn more about this Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in

the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew 28:19

“Where there is no

vision the people perish.” (Proverbs

29:18)

You can’t aim if you can’t see the target. You can’t arrive if you don’t know the desti-nation. You can’t strive to become what God has in mind if you can’t see His vision.

In this 6 part sermon series (based on the book “Visioneering” by Andy Stanley) we will explore the vision for mission God gave to Nehemiah, and the vision God has in mind for our lives individu-

ally, in our families, and collectively as the Body of Christ. God has so much more in mind for you to be, more in mind for us to be together as His family of faith, His sol-diers of the cross, His missionaries at work in His harvest fields. Join us for this sermon se-ries and Bible study each Sunday, July 24

th

– August 28th

as we explore the way God worked and spoke through His servant Nehemiah so many centuries ago, and we’ll see how God is still speaking these words of life and mis-sion to us still this very day.

Look in the July Har-vester for the full arti-cle.

At our last Council meeting, the Council affirmed the ap-pointment of Linda Steinbart to the position of Treasurer. Linda’s appointment is for the remainder of the term to which Connie Zimmerman was elected in 2009 which runs through December of this year. Please welcome and support Linda in this new role, one for which she is very qualified. In 1980 Linda earned an MBA degree with accounting as her focus. She is well versed in fund alloca-tion, reconciliation, and re-porting. Linda has served as the controller for a nonprofit

organization in Michigan while her husband Paul was a PhD student at Michigan State University. Since 1984 she has served as the treas-urer for numerous LCMS churches and LCMS organiza-tions in Utah, Tennessee, Missouri, and Ari-zona. Currently she is the volunteer treasurer for an ASU student organization, International Student Club (ISC), and the appointed treasurer for the LCMS inter-national student ministry um-brella organization, Interna-tional Student Ministry, Inc. I believe Linda’s resume speaks for itself and we wel-come her knowledge and experience to our church leadership group.

We would also like to take an opportunity to express our

appreciation for the job per-formed by Connie Zimmerman while she held the office. Con-nie was very instrumental in introducing and developing the Narrative Budget used by the Council to prepare and present our 2011 budget. This approach focuses on the min-istries of Hosanna as the basis for estimating and planning our expenditures and pro-vides a very logical budgeting approach that has been shared with the Pacific South-west District with very posi-tive feedback. Thank you, Connie, for taking the lead on this budget approach and for all the work you did during your service as Treasurer to our congregation. Bruce Arneson, on behalf of the Council

Financial Reporting Policy

Per Hosanna’s Constitution, “The Church Council shall manage the con-gregation between Voters Assembly meetings and is responsible to ad-minister all the congregation’s affairs except the following matters for action only by the Voters’ Assembly:

1. call or removal of a called worker. 2. purchase or sale of Church property over 5% of the annual operating budget. 3. purchase or sale of land or buildings. 4. adoption of the annual Vision, Ministry and Budget Plan. 5. dissolution of the congregation. 6. election of a slate of Officers and Church Council at Large as provided in the bylaws. 7. excommunication of members.”

Some questions have come to the attention of the Council regarding financial reporting and administration of the congregation’s affairs. Please note that it is the Church Council that es-tablishes reporting policies in regard to financial information. It is not the Treasurer, the Finan-cial Secretary or the Pastor that determines what financial information is reported. Per the by-laws, the Treasurer Shall: “…keep accurate records and provide monthly reports to the Church Council and congregation.” The bylaws do not prescribe any specific reporting content or for-mat. The current Council has discussed this issue at length and has approved a policy whereby the Treasurer reports to the congregation on a monthly basis via Connections and/or the Har-vester, such reporting to include total year-to-date contributions and total year-to-date expen-ditures. This reporting is to be provided not later than the second Sunday of each month for the results as of the end of the previous month, if possible. While the church’s called workers attend Council meetings as advisory members, they do not vote on such policies.

As a Council, we are concerned about how the financial information being reported is being interpreted. For example, some donations made in 2010 are treated as income in 2010 even though they are used to cover 2011 expenses. As a result, at some times during the year, the information reported may appear to suggest that our expenses are greater than our income. This appearance is due to the timing of the reports and should not be interpreted to mean we are experiencing financial difficulty. We would hope that the congregation would trust the Council to carry out our responsibilities as described in the Constitution – “to administer all the congregation’s affairs” - and trust the Council to act responsibly in regards to church finances. If you have specific questions or concerns, those should be directed to the Church Council, not to an individual officer or called worker. Such concerns may be submitted in writing through the church office or through any Council member. Also, per the bylaws, “members of the con-gregation may attend a Church Council meeting; however, if they have a specific issue to dis-cuss or present it must be presented to the President of the congregation in writing and be on the printed Agenda.” Council meetings are generally held on the first Saturday of each month and are noted on the church calendar.

“Faith comes from hearing the mes-sage, and the mes-sage is heard through the word of Christ.” (Romans 10:17) God has called many brave men and women into military service to protect and pre-serve the free-doms we enjoy to worship our Lord and proclaim His name boldly to the world. One dire need our military personnel has is the need to for the Word of God ac-cessible to them in all times and in often difficult situa-tions. We have an opportunity to help meet that need. Just $25 provides the Military Bi-blestick package to one soldier and their family. Our goal: provide Biblestick pack-ages to an entire company which is 100 soldiers. Can you provide for one soldier at $25, or maybe several sol-diers if the Spirit of God so moves you? Please mark any contributions

“Military Biblestick” and mail or bring those contributions to Ho-sanna through the month of July.

If you want to learn more about this nationwide outreach effort, please go to FaithComesByHearing.com and click the “Military Outreach” link to review some powerful video testi-

monies and to receive much more information.

Also, see the July Harvester for a full article on this “Military Out-reach”. You will also find a flyer on the bulletin board in the Narthex.
