The Sheboygan County TennisAssociation (SCTA) was foundedin 1990 by Dr. Doug Opel. Thefirst junior tennis tournament was

held in the Summer of 1991 atmultiple sites across Sheboyganwith well over 100 players be-tween ages 12 and 18 participat-ing. Community Bank & Trustwas the title sponsor with the She-boygan Parks and Recreation De-partment as the major partner.

The tournament grew duringthe 90s until the unexpected pass-ing of Dr. Opel from a heart attackin January, 1998. The tournamentwas renamed The Doug Opel Me-morial Sheboygan County Jr. Ten-nis Tournaments, but due to theSCTA leadership changing handsmany times over the years partic-

ipation dwindled. The late Dr.Opels son, Darren Opel, movedback to Sheboygan in 2002 andwas asked to assume leadership ofthe organization. There were afew volunteers, a few programs, and the local tennis tournament. Itook over leadership and was insurvival mode! said Opel. Theevent had to combine age groupsand even boys and girls divisionsin some instances.

Around 2002 the doubles tour-nament was cancelled. In 2008,the major partner in the tourna-mentThe Sheboygan Recre-ation Departmentwithdrew all

support because the dwindling in-terest made it impractical to con-tinue investing their staff time oreffort. The SCTA then turned tothe Sheboygan YMCA who as-sisted with the tournament in2008 through 2010. With partici-pation still low and the tourna-ment still struggling, the SCTAtook a hiatus from 2011 thru2013. The SCTA approachedSports Core about resurrecting thetournament in 2014. It was verysuccessful with modifiedage/ability divisions and morethan 70 players participating. Dar-ren Opel is hoping to see thisyears tournament host 100+players, reminiscent of his fa-thers founding efforts.

The Golf Coaches Associationof Wisconsin (GCAW) is proud toannounce the recipients of the 4thannual Team Academic All-Stateaward, established to recognizehigh school golf teams with thehighest team grade point averages(team is defined as the five des-ignated golfers on the roster for thespring 2015 WIAA regional tour-nament).
