We recently lost a member of the St. Bernards family, Margo Hilderbran, who worked in Nutritional Services as a Nutritional Services Assistant. She will be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by a husband and three children along with a host of loving friends and family. Please keep Margo’s family in your prayers. A drop in memorial service will be held in her honor on August 25 in the Chapel from 2-3 pm for those who’d like to pay their respects and reflect in prayer.

Environmental Services All of us in the Rehab Department just wanted to say a big thank you to Mrs. Pam Simmons for taking care of us while we're set up down in the basement. She goes out of her way to make sure our office and locker rooms are sanitized and stocked! We appreciate her for all she does for us! Todd Burton, Rehab Services

Reference Lab Our office closed and relocated pretty quick. There was a patient we were not able to reach to resched-ule her appointment. The day after the move, which was her scheduled appointment date and time, while performing a walk through of the clinic to make sure no items were left behind I encountered this patient. I was very apologetic, but felt horrible because she had drove in from out of town for what she thought was an 8:00 appointment and ultrasound. I phoned lab and spoke with Detra Varner about be-ing able to order the patients labs. We had no printer, fax machine or blank orders. She faxed a blank order form to the nearest clinic for me. The patient was able to have her labs and another lady from scheduling assisted me with scheduling her ultrasound. Thanks for going above and beyond Detra! Mable Prunty, Pregnancy Clinic

I.T. Jeff Battles is a ROCKSTAR (even though he is an Alabama fan)! Not sure where I would be without his support and guidance! Jeff is always there to walk me through something that I do not understand IT wise. If he does not know the answer, he is able to put me in contact with someone who can help! Jeff is an excellent asset to our team here at St. Bernards! Kelsey Matheney, Process Improvement

One Day Surgery & PACU Recently a visitor was placed in a consultation room to be informed about how their family member’s surgery went and that the patient was revived after a Code Blue status. This visitor came to my desk, to express all her grateful emotions. As she held back her tears, she said, “Dr. Hobby, has been so wonder-ful. She saved my family member, because there was no way she was letting go.” This visitor, was very impressed and it touched her heart, to say the very least, that Dr. Hobby, had called her several times to check on her, throughout the day. She said, “I know that she has other people to see, but she still made time for me.” That level of care and thoughtfulness, gave our visitor the peace and safety that she was very much needing. She also stated, “Everyone has been so amazing since I got to this floor, and even back where they get patients ready.” I wish you could’ve seen this visitor, radiate with such love and joy, as she spoke so highly of everyone. As for me, I think you all are extraordinary. There really just is no other word. I tell our patients, all the time, when they check in, about how amazing our Surgeons, CRNAs, An-esthesiologists, Nurses, Techs and staff are. I feel pretty proud, that I work with people, who I can speak so highly about. What you do matters to me, our patients and visitors. Thank you, for being extraordinary! You’re important. Terin Kapernick, One Day Surgery

Stroke Program Awarded by American Heart Association

From Behind the Mask: An Unseen Smile Can Still Be Shared Have you noticed how you can see the smiles behind those masks? It is not surprising how our eyes smile when our lips do. In case you didn’t know, smiling makes us not only happier, but healthier. Smiling is a natural drug. Science has proven that simply smiling has physical and mental benefits. It releases en-dorphins, our natural painkillers, and serotonin. Together these make us feel good. Grinning slows the heart, lowers blood pressure, reduces stress and improves immune function. Just what we need now!

Even faking a smile works! When people placed chopsticks in their teeth sideways, forcing the muscles around the mouth into a full smile, their heart rates lowered, and they recovered from stress faster. You’ve likely heard of people getting Botox injections in their faces to remove wrinkles by temporarily paralyzing muscles. Interest-ingly, some of the patients admitted they felt less pleasure responding to things around them, perhaps be-cause they couldn’t smile big and wide. People who smile more tend to elicit more positive connections with other people, which helps make them both happier and healthier. Smiling sends a signal to our brains to make us feel better, and when people see us smile, their brains react as if they were smiling too. We need to smile more, for ourselves and others. LeAnn Thieman, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for Nurses, shares, “My mama often gave the same advice that Thumper taught Bambi: “When you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours.” Wouldn’t the world be a better, happier place if we all followed the guidance of wise women and rabbits? Smiling is key to health and happiness…just what the world needs now more than ever. So smile often, especially under those masks.

The St. Bernards Stroke Program continues to make great efforts ensuring that we are improving the great care provided to patients who suffer strokes.

St. Bernards earned a Get with the Guidelines-Stroke Bronze Achievement Award by the American Heart Association. The award recognizes the efforts made in applying the most up-to-date evidence-based treatment guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes in our community. In addition, this signifies that we have achieved an 85% or greater on all AHA measures.

We would like to congratulate those who are involved with the care of our stroke patients. Thank you for your commitment to providing exceptional care here at St. Bernards.

“A smile is a curve that sets

everything straight.”
