Eagle Creek Road Receives Larger Culverts, Benefit to Native Yellowstone Cutthroat Gardiner, MT – The Gardiner Ranger District, Custer Gallatin National Forest will begin work on the Eagle Creek Road (#3243) starting July 13 and extending to approximately mid-August. The Eagle Creek Road is roughly 2.5 miles above Gardiner, off the Jardine Road. Culvert replacement will take place approximately 3 miles up the Eagle Creek Road. Both Eagle Creek and Davis Creek have undersized perched culverts that prevent native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout from accessing the upper watershed. Currently 1.9 miles of Eagle Creek is occupied by Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout. By replacing the two undersized culverts located on upper Eagle Creek and Davis Creek with larger aquatic organism passage (AOP) culverts, secure Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout habitat would be extended to the upper reaches of the stream to nearly 4.7 miles of native cutthroat trout stream habitat.

“Geographically, this project is important because Eagle Creek is one of only four Yellowstone River tributaries in the Gardiner Basin with headwater resident populations of Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout, secure from competition and hybridization with nonnative fish,” said Mike Thom, Gardiner District Ranger. “We are thrilled to have this project happening on the ground this summer. This is a wonderful opportunity to conserve Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout and further build sustainable populations through partnership efforts.”

The Gardiner Ranger District expects two, approximately 10-day periods where the Eagle Creek Road will be completely closed to recreational use during the time. The lower portion of Eagle Creek Road will remain open for the first three miles throughout the project. Once the closure is in place there will be no trailer turn-around. Continual updates on the project will be posted on the Custer Gallatin National Forest facebook page or by calling the Gardiner Ranger District at 406-848-7375.

The project is part of ongoing conservation partnership efforts with Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks, as well as Yellowstone National Park to conserve native Yellowstone Cutthroat Trout populations in the Upper Yellowstone river drainage. Construction efforts have been coordinated to best minimize impacts to many recreational uses on the Upper Eagle Creek Road, while still allowing the project to continue.

“We hope to further use the project as a great learning venture about native fish conservation in the community, as part of the Watershed Warriors Program,” Thom continued. Funding for the project is provided by the U.S. Forest Service, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Future Fisheries improvement program and by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Woman gored after approaching bison in Yellowstone National Park Always stay more than 25 yards away from bison

• After a 72-year-old woman from California approached within 10 feet of a bison multiple times to take its photo, the animal gored her.

• The incident occurred on the evening of June 25, 2020, at the female’s campsite at Bridge Bay Campground.

• Rangers provided immediate medical care to the woman who sustained multiple goring wounds. She was then flown via helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center.

• “The series of events that led to the goring suggest the bison was threatened by being repeatedly approached to within 10 feet,” said Yellowstone’s Senior Bison Biologist Chris Geremia. “Bison are wild animals that respond to threats by displaying aggressive behaviors like pawing the ground, snorting, bobbing their head, bellowing, and raising their tail. If that doesn’t make the threat (in this instance it was a person) move away, a threatened bison may charge. To be safe around bison, stay at least 25 yards away, move away if they approach, and run away or find cover if they charge.”

• This incident is under investigation. There is no additional information to share.• Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild. When an animal is near a campsite, trail, boardwalk,

parking lot, or in a developed area, give it space. Stay more than 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals - bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves. If need be, turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal in close proximity.

• Read more about safety in the park, including how to behave around wildlife.• Visitors: take the Yellowstone Pledge!

Visitor injured by a grizzly bear while hiking near Fairy FallsAlways hike in groups of three or more• On the morning of June 22, 2020, a woman, age 37, from Columbia, Missouri, sustained a minor injury from a female

grizzly bear while hiking on the Fairy Falls Trail near Old Faithful.• The visitor was hiking alone when she encountered two grizzly bears at very close range. The female bear knocked

the woman down, and she sustained a scratch on her thigh. When the visitor fell to the ground, she also received minor injuries to her face. She later declined medical attention.

• The hiker attempted to use her bear spray. • Following the incident, the Fairy Falls Trail was cleared of hikers. The trail and surrounding area has been temporarily

closed. • “From the injured person’s statements, this appears to be a typical case of a mother grizzly bear protecting her

offspring following a close-range encounter,” said bear management biologist Kerry Gunther. “Because this bear was displaying natural protective behavior for its cub, no action will be taken against the bear. Several trails in the area will be closed to give the grizzly family group time to clear from the area.”

• This is the first incident of a bear injuring a visitor in Yellowstone in 2020. The last time a bear injured a visitor in the park was in June 2019, when a black bear bit into an occupied tent and bruised a woman’s thigh.

• Protect yourself and bears while you hike in bear country:• Hike in groups of three or more people• Carry bear spray and know how to use it• Be alert and make noise• Stay out of areas that are closed for bear management• Don’t hike at dawn, dusk, or at night when grizzly bears are most active• If need be, turn around and go the other way to avoid interacting with a wild animal

• Wildlife in Yellowstone National Park are wild. When an animal is near a trail, boardwalk, parking lot, or in a developed area, give it space. Stay 25 yards (23 m) away from all large animals - bison, elk, bighorn sheep, deer, moose, and coyotes and at least 100 yards (91 m) away from bears and wolves.

• This incident is under investigation. There is no additional information to share, and there are no known images of the incident.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service biologist injured by grizzly bear in Centennial ValleyBozeman, MT — A biologist with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) was attacked by a grizzly bear in the Centennial Valley Wednesday morning. The individual suffered serious bite wounds but is expected to recover fully. The USFWS employee was working on a sage grouse monitoring project on Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge about a mile west of Elk Lake. The biologist heard a noise in the sagebrush and turned to see two grizzly bears in a close-encounter situation, approximately 80 to 100 yards away. One bear stood up, and the other charged the biologist. The biologist deployed bear spray at the charging bear and throughout the attack until the attacking bear ran away with the other bear.

Park County Health Department Update - 10 a.m. June 30, 2020Park County currently has three active cases of COVID-19. There are also two more possible positive cases that were identified from recent surveillance testing in Gardiner and Livingston June 19-20. All other results from that testing event returned negative this morning.

The three active cases developed symptoms of COVID-19, immediately isolated themselves, tested positive and are recovering at home. Their close contacts have been notified by the Health Department and additional testing is in progress.

The other two individuals that have tested positive were a part of the recent surveillance testing in Gardiner and Livingston. Both of these individuals are being retested to confirm the accuracy of the test because they have remained well and have no other risk factors for COVID-19.

The Park County Health Department has tested more than 1,000 people for COVID-19 in the past 10 days. The primary focus has been individuals with no symptoms. This helps us understand if the virus is circulating in Park County without our knowledge.

It has taken much longer than we expected to get test results from the Montana State Health Lab. They are operating nearly 24 hours a day, and processing more than 10,000 tests weekly.

Cases remain low in Park County but are rising. COVID-19 is here. It takes all of us to contain the spread of the virus. Wash your hands, wear a mask, watch your distance. Please avoid groups this holiday weekend.

If you have symptoms of COVID-19, including shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches and a dry cough, please stay home and call the Livingston HealthCare COVID-19 Clinic at 406-222-3541. If you believe you have been a close contact to a person with COVID-19 call the Health Department at 406-222-4145.

Thank you, Park County!

190 Yellowstone employees test negative for COVID-19 in fourth round of surveillance tests MAMMOTH HOT SPRINGS, WY – In the fourth round of surveillance testing on Yellowstone employees, all tests came back negative. On June 17 and 18, National Park Service (NPS) employees, with assistance from local and state health officials, tested 190 employees from the NPS and concession companies operating in the park.

Initially, one concession employee tested positive and was immediately isolated. The employee was retested twice more, and both tests came back negative. The state health office described the initial test as a "false positive" and the employee has returned to work. According to the county health officer, a small percentage of "false positives" are normal in widespread surveillance testing.

The total number of Yellowstone-employee tests completed since late May is 577. The week of June 22, 162 tests were conducted, and those results are pending. Moving forward, the park will continue to test employees in partnership with Montana and Wyoming.
