Question of the Week Who was Saint Augustine?

“You made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless

until they rest in You.” The man we know as Augustine of

Hippo (feast day August 28) made this passionate

declaration to God in his Confessions written in Africa in

the fourth century. A prolific writer and even more

famous orator, this impassioned thinker and Christian

convert wrote some of the earliest extended scripture

commentaries. He left an indelible mark on teachings

concerning baptism, original sin, chastity, and doctrines

about Jesus as well. He chased suspicious ideas around the

church tirelessly and defined orthodoxy on many issues.

For a lot of folks, however, Augustine fascinates as a

person: Sexual desire and intellectual craving for

knowledge were the twin demons of his life. His restless

heart found repose in the mystery of God reluctantly—but

not without a considerable struggle that he chose to

document personally for us.

The man who would become Saint Augustine was once a

faithless lover, an unreliable dad, a lousy prospect for a

husband, and a guy who regularly broke his mother’s

heart. That he also became an irreplaceable paving stone

in church thought is wonderfully encouraging for all of us

who currently fall short of who we might yet be. - Alice Camille

Third Annual Family Mass at St. Anne’s Shrine Sunday, July 8 at 12:15 p.m.

The annual Diocesan Family Mass at St. Anne’s Shrine in Isle LaMotte will take place at 12:15 p.m. on Sunday, July 8. After Mass, to be celebrated by Bishop Christopher Coyne, visitors may picnic on the shrine grounds or on the shore of Lake Champlain. Bring your own picnic or purchase a

Totus Tuus Summer Catholic Camp

Totus Tuus is Latin for “totally yours” and is a Catholic youth program dedicated to sharing the Gospel and promoting the Catholic faith through catechesis, evangelization, Christian witness, and Eucharistic worship. The goal of Totus Tuus is to help young people grow in their understanding of, and strengthen their faith in, Jesus Christ. The program strives to bring our faith to life by creating a balance between knowledge of the meaning of the Sacraments and an authentic Sacramental life.

Kids’ Corner ~ Sharing the Gospel In today's Gospel a little girl was so sick that

people thought she was dead. However,

Jesus said she was just asleep. He held her

hand and said, "Get up, little girl." Every day you work hard

doing chores at home and learning at school. If you are tired

and do not want to get out of bed, Jesus will hold your hand

and say, "Get up and enjoy the day."

Prayer Lord, help me get out of bed quickly to learn about your

world. Something to Draw Draw a little girl in bed with Jesus holding her hand. Mission for the Week Make a Get Well card and give it to someone who is sick.
