The ARTC Contract
■ 2 + 3 Year option Contract with ARTC for ballast cleaning on the Hunter
Valley Network
■ Deliver 92Km of Ballast Cleaning in first 2 years
■ RM80 and 8 MFC Ballast Wagons chose as the best solution for the
contract due to constraints on the network and project budget.
■ First shift commenced on September 30th 2014

Preparation
■ Modifications were also required to convert the coupling systems to meet Australian standards
■ Upon finalisation of contract negotiations the RM80 & 8 MFC wagons were transferred to Swietelsky’s depot in Fischermand, Austria
■ Structural modification at the MFC main frame to meet Narrow Non Electric Outline for ARTC

■ Entire upfront and post machine mapping and survey to confirm plant dimension and meet the ARTC TOC requirements according to the Rolling Stock outline
■ Repainting and branding were also finished prior to boarding the vessel for departure

6. KEY LEARNINGS

■ Early pre-planning to ensure scope fully understood including:
■ Cut depths; and
■ Return rate
■ Importance of the use of SOG charts – time chainage charts but
with physical train lengths included
■ Positive location of cables.
■ Collaborative planning between LS Rail and ARTC staff

■ Ability for ARTC to utilise tamping plant on other areas during first
shift;
■ Ballast stockpile management and location critical;
■ Associated civils works can be delivered – improvement to access
roads and drainage
■ Strict maintenance regimes on plant.
6. KEY LEARNINGS FOR THE FUTURE

■ Detailed geotechnical assessment of next areas required to enable
detailed planning;
■ Engineering Controls to allow adjacent line working whilst on the
UP Coal
■ Opportunity to work with ATWS as per European working methods
■ Innovative possession management to enable cleaning of track
sections adjacent to complex junctions
■ Better pre-planning with Corridor Managers to maximise beneficial
works
