STASTASTASTAFFFFFFFF

One Year at Gethsemane

Well, as of June 26th

, I was pastor of Gethsemane for one year! It surely doesn’t seem like it especially when I still find myself

trying to figure out how the telephone works and where the pens are kept (I may never get those things sorted out though).

Although I may still have some degree of confusion, there are already some things that I know for sure:

You are kind, welcoming and friendly people – Really, I mean it. You can be hard on yourself sometimes focusing at missed

opportunities and wishing you could be better at it. Yes, we all could do a better job of reaching out to strangers, but overall I

think the feeling of warmth and love comes through to most people who walk through your doors.

You care – You care about each other, God, strangers, Jesus, The Word of God, the church, Lutherans, people in other

countries, those in need… This is important. You shouldn’t underestimate the value of it.

You like to serve others – You aren’t afraid to get your hands dirty or use huge amounts of your time to help others –

whether it’s someone in the congregation, or a neighbor, or a visitor, or a stranger. Your need to help in very physical, solid

ways is evident.

This is a great foundation for any pastor to work with in a congregation! I look forward to future years and helping you do

better what God has already called you together to do. A year ago at my installation service I told you all that I felt like I had

won the “church lottery”. I still feel that way and I’m still very happy to be your pastor!

GROWING GOD’S GARDENGROWING GOD’S GARDENGROWING GOD’S GARDENGROWING GOD’S GARDEN

Growing God’s Garden – Simply Giving

We had a successful Secret Pledge Drive in May! 51 members or families turned in a financial and involvement

pledge card! What a great response. These cards will not be opened, but will be returned to you in 6 months so

you can assess how you’re doing. If you would still like to fill one out, they are available on the sign up desk.

One easy way to keep up with your financial gifts to Gethsemane (even when you are away during the Summer!)

is by using automatic giving. Here at Gethsemane, we use Simply Giving which is provided by Thrivent. You just fill

out a form and indicate what you would like to give and how often and it will be taken out of your account

automatically. Many people at Gethsemane already use this (Pr. June and Bob do!) and it’s easy, safe and reliable.

The forms can be found on the sign up desk. They’re small envelopes with removable forms on the top. You just

fill it out and return it to Rick Langner, our Treasurer, in his church mailbox or by USPS.

Together we can keep God’s Garden Growing!

To fulfill God’s mission here at Gethsemane:

May, 2012 Fiscal Year to Date (11 months)

Needed per month: $35,335 $388,685

Contributions received: $17,970 $272,445

Other Income: $14,693 $104,415

Surplus / (Shortfall) (2,672) ($11,825)

$7,564 in contributions are needed each week through June to balance the budget.

Summer Hymn Sing Returns

It's summertime at Gethsemane, and that means it is

once again time for our Summer Hymn Sings!

This is your chance to pick your favorite hymns, and

sing a stanza before worship. No, you have to arrive

EARLY before worship on Sunday to get your choice

heard! We take 4 suggestions each week, first come,

first served! If you don't arrive until after we have

begun, you have lost your chance at making a

suggestion, so crawl out of bed early and be ready to

sing at 9:20 AM.

Tentative dates are July 1, 8, and 22, August 5 and 26,

and September 2.

Some adjustments may be made as volunteers for

summer special music surface. Watch Worship This

Week for any changes to the schedule.

Start looking through the ELW hymnal so you can

locate your favorite hymns. The index of first lines is in

the very back of the hymnal. It is helpful if you can call

out a hymn number, not just the first line, to speed

the process so we can sing more!

Looking forward to hearing what hymns you choose

this year!

Summer Choir & Summer Music

Some of you have asked about the possibility of

singing in a Summer Choir. The choir is open to

ANYONE who likes to sing, and can show up for a

rehearsal at 8:45 AM on the day we sing! This is a

GREAT opportunity for some of you who join us for

the "Hallelujah Chorus" on Easter, but can't commit to

our regular choir rehearsal schedule, to lift your voice

in song with us!

Summer choir date this year will be Sunday, August

12. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us!

No special dress code - just whatever you would

normally wear to church! This is a great time for

families who enjoy singing to sing together in the choir

as parents and children!

Also, anyone who plays or sings and who would like to

offer your musical talents while the choir is on

summer hiatus, please see me! I will have a sign-up

sheet with me at the organ every Sunday for times in

July, August, and September 2nd

. Let me know when

you can help, and what you would like to sing or play,

and we'll work you into the schedule.

Please see me any Sunday after worship starting June

10 to sign up!

Your church family and I look forward to hearing your

musical gifts in worship!

Gethsemane Lutheran Church to Host

Summer Hymn Festival

Gethsemane is again hosting the annual Augsburg Fortress Summer 2012 Worship & Music Clinic on Aug. 6 & 7.

The public is cordially invited to attend the Monday Evening Hymn Festival: Rejoice, O Earth, on Aug. 6 at 7:00pm.

The festival will be led by guest clinicians Michael Bedford, organist, and Bradley Ellingboe, choral director.

Michael Bedford has served as Organist/Choirmaster and Composer-in-Residence at St. John's Episcopal Church in

Tulsa, OK for twenty-one years. A native of Sherman, Texas, he holds the BM, BME and MM degrees from Texas

Christian University in Ft. Worth, and the DMA degree from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas.

Bradley Ellingboe has led a wide-ranging career in the world of singing, including accomplishments as a choral

conductor, soloist, composer, scholar and teacher. Ellingboe, a bass-baritone, has been on the faculty of the

University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, since 1985, where he is Professor of Music and Director of Choral

Activities. He is a graduate of St. Olaf College and the Eastman School of Music. As a church musician, Ellingboe

was Director of Music at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Albuquerque from 1990-2009.

Please join us in the air-conditioned comfort of Gethsemane’s sanctuary for this inspiring summer evening of

music and hymnody. The event is open both to musicians and members of the general public.

CRC Summer Lunch Program, July 16-20

Gethsemane is again participating in the 2012 Clintonville-

Beechwold Community Resource Center (CRC) Summer Lunch

Program for children in the Broadmeadows area July 16-20.

We need four volunteers each day, 11:45-1:15, to setup,

welcome and feed the children, and cleanup afterwards. The

food is prepared offsite and delivered at 12:15. We also need

some healthy snacks, such as cheese or peanut butter and

crackers and oatmeal bars. Approximately fifty children are

served each day; so, we need a lot of snacks over the five days. A signup sheet can be found in Atrium Way and a

basket for snacks in the Narthex. Please contact Jan Davis at 885-9785 or [email protected] for more

information.

Thanks to Painting Volunteers

This Spring a number of volunteers pitched in to repaint the stairway and handrails leading from the parking lot

door and the upstairs classroom corridors, doors and door frames. Their efforts really paid off as everything

looks fresher and makes the church appear more inviting. Our thanks to

Gethsemane’s Prayer Chain

Changes to E-Prayers

Gethsemane is expanding the current

Prayer Chain to E-Prayers. Instead of

sharing the prayer concerns of our

members, friends and family with just a

few people through a phone tree we will

be using the congregation’s e-mail list to

let members know of prayer requests

that we receive.

TO NOT RECEIVE PRAYER REQUESTS:

the prayer e-mail list, please contact the

church office at 614-885-4319 or

[email protected].

TO MAKE A PRAYER REQUEST:

If you wish to make a prayer request,

please send an email to

[email protected] OR call the

church office at 614-885-4319. Once the

request is received the office will send it

out to the congregation and also list the

name in the Sunday bulletin. If your

prayer request needs to remain

confidential, please let us know, and we

won’t send it out or print it in the

bulletin.

Congregation Meeting – May 20, 2012

A copy of the Council minutes and Financial Report is posted in Atrium Way.

PLEASE READ BUT LEAVE POSTED. Take home copies (minus attachments) are

available at the Sign Up Desk in the narthex.

A congregational meeting was held to address the budget for the fiscal year 2013.

Mark Hagerdorn called the meeting to order at 10:45am. 55 congregants signed

into the meeting.

MOTION: (Judy Kulikowski, Paula Sauer) to accept the minutes from the

11/20/2011 Congregation Meeting. Carried.

Pastor June thanked the congregation for their continued support. Pastor

reported on steps she has taken to improve communication with the church. A

bulletin board containing church opportunities and leadership information has

been placed in the lobby, thanks to Jim Sauer and the Stewardship Team.

Over the coming summer the pastor will be working on the website use.

Stewardship team implemented a plan to help with congregation communication.

Currently church leaders are mostly communicated to by email. Vision event is

planned for June 10 to present to the congregation the vision statement.

Contemporary worship is being looked at and planned by Dr. Guenther and Pastor

June along with a small group. Anyone wishing to join in is welcome.

Mark Hagerdorn thanked all for coming and Joe Reilly and Rick Langner for all

their hard work. A thank you was also given to the Ministry Teams for watching

their spending in the past year. While an unbalanced budget was approved last

year if contributions stay strong through June we will end the 2012 FY budget as

balanced. Pastor June interjected with how proud she is that everyone is working

hard to keep the church strong.

A discussion on the past year FY budget was lead by Rick Langner.

Joe Reilly presented the proposed FY 2013 budget to the congregation. The

budget is a deficit budget but the council is confident with this budget as the

future looks bright. Questions about the budget were asked and answered.

MOTION: (Howard Feole, Dick Lyndes) to accept the 2013 budget as approved by

council. Carried.

Pastor concluded with pray and following the meeting lunch was served by the

high school youth.

The meeting adjourned at 11:45am.
