Meet the Artists

Nico Olarte-Hayes

Recipient of the 2016-18 Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship, cellist Nico Olarte-Hayes (Pre-College ’07) has given solo recitals at Lincoln Center and the Neue Galerie in New York, in Memphis’ Artists Ascending Series and New York’s Young Musicians Forum, and throughout the Netherlands and Japan. He has played on Live From Lincoln Center (PBS) and The Kennedy Center Honors (CBS) in tribute to violinist Itzhak Perlman, a longtime mentor, and has collaborated frequently with Perlman, notably at the grand opening of the Kennedy Center’s Family Theater. Other collaborations include performances with mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves in Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, pianist Christopher O’Riley in Boston’s Jordan Hall, and violinist Ryu Goto in sold-out tours of Japan and the U.S., broadcast on PBS, NPR, and Fuji TV, respectively. Equally accomplished as a conductor, Olarte-Hayes won the 2015 Vincent C. LaGuardia Conducting Competition and has served as music director of New York’s IconoClassic Opera and Harvard’s Dunster House Opera, leading fully staged productions of Werther and Albert Herring. He has led the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Baltimore Chamber Orchestra, Sofia Festival Orchestra, Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic, Savaria Symphony Orchestra, Camerata Antonio Soler, and Salzburg Chamber Soloists in international workshops including the Tanglewood Festival Conducting Seminar. In 2016, he led the New World Symphony in a workshop with music director Michael Tilson Thomas and served as cover conductor for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra. He is a graduate of Harvard University and the New England Conservatory.

Bobby Boogyeom Park

Born in Seoul, 13-year-old violinist Bobby Boogyeom Park moved to the U.S. in 2017 to study violin with Catherine Cho at Juilliard Pre-College. Since his debut at age 7, he has been a guest soloist at international concerts and festivals including the Shanghai International Arts Festival in 2013, Seeds of Hope Concert for Sichuan, Shanghai in 2014, and Bucheon Music Association Concert in Korea in 2016. He has also performed with the Russian Symphony Orchestra in Moscow and New Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in Shanghai. He won first prizes at the 14th International Russian Rotary Children Music Competition in Moscow in 2016 and Allegro International Music Competition in Hong Kong in 2013. He has been awarded other numerous first prizes in domestic competitions in Korea and China. In 2018 he made his New York debuts at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall after winning first prize at the eighth New York International Music Competition and first prize and the judge's distinction award at the American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition. As first-prize winner at the 2018 New York Chamber Players Young Artists Competition, he will perform a concerto with the New York Chamber Players Orchestra and later will give a solo performance at Carnegie Hall. Today’s performance is the result of winning this year’s Pre-College Violin Concerto Competition.

One of the foremost music preparatory programs in the world, The Juilliard Pre-College Division educates today’s most promising young artists. Established in 1916 as the Preparatory Center, The Pre-College Division at Juilliard offers a complete curriculum of music instruction for highly gifted children up to age 18. Students attend Juilliard every Saturday for 30 weeks during the school year for an individualized course of instruction carefully designed to meet their particular needs. The selective program includes instruction in a chosen major, academic study of music, and solo and ensemble performances. Recognizing the importance of early development and discipline in the music field, the program provides a caring, collaborative, and challenging atmosphere where artistic gifts and technical skills can flourish.

With an average age of just over 12, the Juilliard Pre-College String Ensemble rehearses weekly and presents two concerts each season; a strings-only program in the fall semester and a full symphony orchestra program in the spring. As the youngest ensemble in the division, the String Ensemble is part of an orchestral training program which strives to prepare its members for the rigorous demands and expectations of conservatory and college orchestras. The Pre-College orchestras draw upon the significant resource of the College Division’s students by employing them as mentors to work alongside the Pre-College students. The repertoire is guided by a progressive curriculum beginning with the youngest String Ensemble and continuing through the Symphony and Orchestra, ensuring that all students have exposure to works from varied composers, musical styles and genres. Every spring the String Ensemble concert features a concerto, providing an important opportunity to a student soloist, many of whom go on to important careers. Among them are Han-Na Chang, Pamela Frank, Gil Shaham, Joseph Lin, Yo-Yo Ma, Jon Manasse, Roberto Minczuk, Conrad Tao, and Joyce Yang. In the 2018-19 season, the Pre-College String Ensemble is led by alumnus Nico Olarte-Hayes.
