Jubilee Trivia Night
Lent: Let’s Get Ready for Easter
Tomorrow we will celebrate Ash Wednesday at Jubilee. As with all religious practices at
Jubilee we endeavour to provide a positive experience that is respectful and inclusive
of our four Christian traditions; Anglican, Uniting, Apostolic and Catholic. With this in
mind, our Ash Wednesday Worship will focus on Lent as the time when we get ready
for Easter.
The worship introduction will explain to the children that there are often times in our
lives where we need to prepare for events to ensure they are the most positive and
worthwhile experiences possible. These may include preparations for school or sport,
for visitors, for the arrival of new babies and for celebrations, either secular or religious.
Adequate preparations ensure we have reflected and planned the best course of
action.
Lent is known as a forty-day preparation time, although it is actually 44 days long. Lent
begins on Ash Wednesday and ends just before the Celebration of the Lord’s Supper
on Holy Thursday evening. Forty is a significant number in the Bible: Moses (Ex 34:28),
Elijah (I Kgs 19:8) and Jesus (Mt 4:2; Lk 4:1-2) all fasted for forty days; the great flood
lasted for forty days and nights (Gen 7:17); and the Israelites wandered for forty years
in the desert before they arrived at the promised land (Josh 5:6).
The most important reason for using ash on Ash Wednesday is to prepare for Easter in
the right frame of mind and with the right actions. We receive the ashes as an outward
sign that we are ready to begin our Lenten journey towards Easter. As Christians, we
are a community, we are the people of God, we are the Church. We are always Easter
people: every Sunday we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. During Lent, the purpose
of our preparations is to help make us better disciples of Jesus and remind us how to
be Easter people.
At our school worship for Ash Wednesday, the staff and adults will be invited to receive
the ashes. For practical reasons, the children will be invited to receive the ashes in a
separate classroom celebration. Some families may prefer for their children to receive a
blessing rather than the ashes. If you have not already done so, we ask you to discuss
your preferences with your children (and teachers, if necessary). We welcome all
families to join us for the Ash Wednesday Worship at 9:00am in the bottom covered
area.

Dear Parents,
These days, much attention is devoted to bullying and appropriately so when we consider the severe and detrimental long-term effects on victims (and bullies). Bullying occurs in all areas of society. Many parents will have witnessed or experienced bullying in a number of contexts … work, school, community and, for some, even in the family situation.
Schools can provide fertile opportunities for bullying …there are lots of kids from varying social and cognitive backgrounds, creating differences in power and status arrangements;
teaching staff, while obviously present in their supervision capacity, are not privy to every physical or verbal interaction;
children are reluctant to „dob‟; and even when allegations are made, they are often difficult to substantiate, due to conflicting versions.
We also need to be careful about what constitutes bullying. As a principal, I receive complaints ascribed as bullying that, often are actually one-off acts of aggression or retaliatory responses … still most inappropriate and worthy of investigation, but not bullying! So, a workable and easily understood definition is critical.
Bullying is now generally defined as the repeated physical, verbal or psychological intimidation of a less powerful person by a more powerful person or group. It may include some or all of the following behaviours:
Name calling;
Teasing and taunting;
Racist or sexist remarks;
Social ostracism;
Malicious gossip;
Threats;
Physical force.
… but, essentially relies on an imbalance of power in the relationship between the bully and the victim.
Therefore, not all acts of aggression are bullying. Normally, aggression that involves any 2-way process of attack and counter-attack is not bullying. Particularly, if the attacks occur between parties of equal power/strength/status and are part of a 2-way attack and retaliation process. Rather, bullying usually refers to a one-way attack situation in which the perpetrator has more power and the victim cannot really retaliate. In fact, the victim usually feels helpless and powerless.
Fights that have occurred between two girls, both vying for superiority in a friendship clique, come to mind as examples. One day, Jenny may have the „upper hand‟; the next day, Francine may be able to ostracise Jenny from the group. So, while the behaviours are labelled as bullying by the girls (and. often, by their parents) when each appears to be on the receiving end, in reality, the situation is best described as a kind of feud with varying win-lose outcomes.
My School Website Mark 2
This website went live last Friday after a few hiccups which delayed its arrival. It has been interesting to note that not one sector of education – Catholic, State and Independent – has given the new format the complete tick of approval. The website is looking to offer transparency and comparisons to parents on matters such as student performance and this year, financial data, in a sector which doesn„t simply lend itself to such transparency and comparisons. There have already been many anomalies in the Index of Community Socio Educational Advantage (ICSEA) ratings and how these ratings work.
This year„s introduction of per capita income and expenditure per student financial information is also fraught with a number of pitfalls and I„m sure that many of these will be played out in the print and televised media over the next few weeks. Already there are television advertisements from one education sector which target the supposed„ inequity be-tween state and federal government funding for schools. These advertisements whilst not telling untruths do not tell the whole story of funding to Australian schools.
As an Ecumenical School administered by Brisbane Catholic Education School we do take these websites seriously and we do utilise components of their data e.g. NAPLAN. We do however, urge parents not to be completely reliant on this tool, as it does not report on the many intangibles of what makes a school effective. There are no rankings or scales for instance on the Ecumenical spirit or ethos of the school or on the caring nature of our teachers and staff or on the wonderful input and support we have from our parent body.
JUBILEE P&F MEETING NEXT MONDAY NIGHT

LONG TERM ABSENCES
Parents who wish to exclude their children from school for more than 10 days must complete an application for an Exemption from Compulsory Schooling (Non--state schools) form. The Education General Provisions Act 2006 mandates that all absences of longer than 10 days, other than for medical reasons, must be approved by the Principal of the school and be of sound educational grounds. The form can be found on the Queensland Government website as follows :

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
Today was International Women’s Day. I would like to take this opportunity in extending my sincere thanks to all the women in our community who contribute to the life of our wonderful school. It is also my hope that women feel that they are valued and appreciated not only on this annual celebration, but everyday!
THOUGHT for Your WEEK
"Do a little more each day than you think you possibly can."
Lowell Thomas
Recently, I was talking with a friend and they were telling me about a speech they had read. The speech was about a salesman and the one simple principal of success that he saw over and over again in successful people. He saw:
They were successful in obtaining top positions because when it came to their work, they did what needed to be done and then some.
They had the happiest families and these were not the ones that were rich but the ones who spent time with each other, helped each other, and had respect for each other, and then some.
They had strong friendships because they were friends who were good friends, and then some.
They were always willing to help out, were kind, and thoughtful, and then some.
In any situation, you knew you could always count on them and then some.
They never gave up on any goals; when met with challenges they took action to over come the challenges and then some.
A simple principle - and then some. These three little words are the best that I have heard in a long time. When I started thinking about it, you can apply these words to any situation in your life. You can always do what is needed to be done and then some. If you apply this principle, you will find that you will find success because over time "and then some" adds up to success.
Recently, I have been in situations that I have thought of this principle and applied it, and it is amazing what happens. When it comes to your job, your friendships, your family, your commitments, I invite you to do what you have to do and then some!
Thank you for reading!
With every blessing for the week ahead,
David Sewell

G’day from the APA
HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN”S DAY to all our wonderful girls, ladies, mums, grandmothers and significant
female others! On behalf of the male contingent of the Jubilee community, may I wish you all a wonderful day today.
Ash Wednesday & Lent: Today is Shrove (Pancake) Tuesday. Tomorrow, Catholics and Anglicans celebrate the beginning of the church season of Lent with a special day of prayer and worship – Ash Wednesday. As a Christian school community, we will be celebrating this with a whole-school prayer service, which commences at 9:00am in the Bottom Covered Area. As per the lesson schedule sent out at the beginning of the swimming program, there will be no swimming
lessons tomorrow so all students can attend this service.
Special School Focus: This week we continue our new Special School Focus on self-management :
“Laughter is great and fun is no crime,
If we do the RIGHT THING in the RIGHT PLACE at the RIGHT TIME !”
The main focus is on learning how to be people who think before they act, including being focussed on lessons in class time, playing only in the designated areas during play time, answering bells on time, making appropriate choices about types of play, getting to home pick-up locations on time, etc. We‟ve asked the children to ask themselves some simple questions before they make a choice… Is this what I‟m supposed to be doing ? Is this where I am supposed to be to do that ? Is this the right time to be doing it ? If the answer to any of these questions is “No”, then make a better choice.
Traffic Safety - Drop Off & Pick Up Issues: There has been some improvement in aspects of this issue – thank you – however, it can still be even better. One suggestion to reduce peak hour congestion at both our main pick-up points is, instead of lining up ahead of the 3:00pm dismissal time, just delay your arrival by 10 or 15 minutes after the bell. We have teacher supervision of the students at both points until 3:20pm and the congestion has usually cleared significantly by 3:15pm. Parents who arrive at 3:15, usually find there is no delay in the pick-up process at that time. Remember, that a small amount of personal convenience or a few extra minutes of patience on the part of each person can make a major difference in terms of student safety and a smoother process for everyone.
Have a great Week 7 everyone !
Regards,
Brian Mason (Assistant Principal, Administration.)

APRE NEWS
Last Friday we had our first class prayer presentation at Assembly for 2011. We thank Carolyn Stewart and her Year 1
class for sharing information and prayers on World Day of Prayer. This Friday Bianca Stenton and Year 4 will introduce the
first week of Lent and Project Compassion in our prayer assembly.
This week the children will bring home their boxes to collect coins for Project Compassion throughout Lent. We encourage
families to discuss Project Compassion and how your children may best support this cause. We would encourage you,
where possible, to get your children to take positive action to help support Project Compassion in the field. Some practical
suggestions may include prayers for those less fortunate, earning pocket money to donate to Project Compassion,
spending half the amount you usually do at the tuckshop and instead adding the coins to the Project Compassion Box at
the tuckshop, in classrooms or the office. Perhaps your family could think of some innovative ways to make a contribution,
children and adults included. Imagine if every child in our school added 5cents to their box every day we would raise over
$1200.
A very positive suggestion from the Project Compassion calendar was to write a Lenten pledge as a family to express how
your family can commit themselves to help others during Lent.
On Ash Wednesday morning, Kristy Taylor and four student representatives from our Community Action group will be
attending the launch of Project Compassion by Archbishop Bathersby in the Brisbane City Mall and then attending the Ash
Wednesday Mass at the cathedral. We look forward to hearing about their experience.
Don‟t forget to mark „Living Vision‟ in your calendar. The gathering begins at 7.30pm preceded by a time of hospitality over
a cuppa from 7pm. The evening includes Prayer, Presentations by 3 Church Leaders, Multimedia, Witness Sharings, a
Question and Answer Panel and concludes with prayer by 9.30pm.
Date: Tuesday 12 April, 7:00pm - 9:30pmVenue: Newlife Uniting Church, 4 Greenwich Court, Robina (Map)
Presenters: Rev Bruce Johnson (Uniting), Archbishop Phillip Aspinall (Anglican), Archbishop John Bathersby (Catholic)
Blessings to you and yours,
Chris
Ash Wednesday 9th March
This week the season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, which also marks the beginning of the annual Caritas Australia Project Compassion Appeal. Donations to Project Compassion allow Caritas Australia, the Catholic Agency for International Aid and Development, to work with local communities around the world to alleviate poverty, hunger, oppression and injustice. Each family will receive a Project Compassion box and/or a set of envelopes for their donations or you can donate online via the website at www.caritas.org.au
Please put your compassion into action this Lent by supporting the 2011 Project Compassion Appeal.

Absences – we are having a worsening problem with parents not letting us know beforehand that their child/ren will be away from After School Care. It is of great importance to us that your child is safe once they have left school, so a quick phone call or email (you can leave a voice message when we‟re not here) if greatly appreciate! Parents should note that a Non-communication fee of $1 per child per afternoon is charged each time we do not receive notification before the session has started that they will be absent and have to phone the school office to check whether missing children have been signed out early or were absent from school.
Vacation Care – Bookings open from 2pm Monday 21st March. You can pick up forms from OSHC or have them emailed to you – but please bear in mind bookings can only be accepted with a signed booking sheet. If you are getting forms emailed you can scan and return email or fax to 55000351. For those families who are new to our service, places are offered on a „first come, first served‟ basis (no bookings are carried through from term time), and we generally end up full so we would encourage you to get in as early as possible.
Your fees must be up to date if you are planning on making a booking, and families who are non-weekly users of OSHC must pay prior to or at the start of the holidays.
Bookings will be final (and charged accordingly) as of 6pm Friday April 8th to ensure time to adequately roster staff and purchase supplies for activities.
Thanks and have a great week

The Queensland Child Oral Health Survey is Here!
The purpose of the Queensland Child Oral Health Survey (QCOHS) is to investigate the impact of dental disease in child populations in Queensland. Your school has kindly agreed to participate.
Over the next few weeks, an invitation will be sent home to parents via randomly selected students. Parents/guardians will be asked to fill out a Survey questionnaire, then on designated days, our trained, professional clinicians will visit the school to record the oral health status of the participating students including the presence of decay, any existing fillings, trauma to front teeth (fractures/chips), gingivitis, plaque, enamel defect and any ulcers or other tissue trauma in the mouth. This examination can take up to 20 minutes. No treatment will be given, as this is a research Survey to take a snap shot of the current oral health status of our 5 – 14 year olds in Queensland. However, should our clinicians detect an area of concern; parents will be notified in order that treatment can be sought through the school dental service or the family dentist. The collective results will provide policy and planning direction for services in your community and eventually to be absorbed into a National study.
Should your child be selected, Queensland Health would be very grateful for parental consent for your child‟s inclusion in the study. We can‟t do this without you!
Year 3 Morning Tea
Please come and join us for coffee this Friday,11th March at Zaraffas Coffee at Pacific Pines from 10.30am.
