Juanita, Manuel and Maria in New York. 1940s.

Juanita & Maria Mendoza Juanita and Maria Mendoza began their

professional singing career during World War II in San Antonio, Texas when their, by then already famous, older sister, Lydia Mendoza stopped performing to raise a family of her own. Mother Leonora Mendoza succeeded in raising almost all of her children in the musical tradition which had been her own heritage, more out of necessity than anything else, because the family found early in their career that making music, singing, and performing was more rewarding than picking cotton, shelling pecans or being domestics even though they all did their share of such jobs usually avai lable to Mexican-Americans.

Leonora Mendoza was obviously a remarkable woman whose own mother had been involved in teaching music in Rosita , Coahuila, Mexico. Leonora learned many songs from her mother and in turn passed on to her children including Lydia , Maria , and Juanita an extraordinary heritage of songs and fo lklore including skits , jokes & stories which made up a good part of the "show" w hich the Mendoza Family was to develop during the 1930s. People often ca lled them "Mexican gypsies" as they moved from farm to fa rm, appeared

in plazas, barber shops, restaurants, at house parties, fiestas , in tents and finally in theatres throughout the Southwest.

The Me ndoza family 's professional career began in a hotel room in San Antonio on March 8, 1928 when father Francisco Mendoza, mother Leonora, and daughters Lydia and Maria made their first phonograph records for a traveling recording team sent down from New York to record regional music. (2 songs from this first session are heard on Folklyric LP 9023 distributed by Arhoolie Records.) A few years later on March 7, 1934 at the Texas Hotel the Mendoza Family were once again recording in a make-shift studio set up in one of the hotel's rooms. After the family had completed six songs, daughter Lydia was given the opportunity to record six sides on her own accompanying herself on guitar. Among them was a song Lydia had learned from a bubble gum wrapper e ntitled "Mal Hombre" which as soon as it was released became and overnight hit for young Lydia Mendoza and her famil y. (Many of these early Mendoza recordings are available on Folk lyric LP 9023 & 9024.) From then on Lydia was the featured member of the fa mi ly as they sang and

played for shoppers and v1s1tors and merchants and truck drivers at the Plaza de Zecate in San Antonio. The family would set up their taco stand in one corner of the plaza while other duetos and groups would compete for the nickels and dimes offered for a song. The widespread success of Lydia's records eventually resulted in tours of the Southwest, of California, Colorado, New Mexico, up to Chicago and other parts of the Spanish speaking United States. Mother Leonora was the one who organized and planned it all and directed the children, including the boys Manuel, who sang, and Andrew, who became the main joke and story teller as well as MC.

With the advent of World War II it became impossible to continue the touring because tires were unavailable and gasoline was rationed . Family star Lydia wanted to raise her family and so Leonora Mendoza took daughters Maria and Juanita under her wings and went to see Arturo Vazguez, owner of the Clu b Bohemia in San Antonio. Two beautiful young women singing their hearts out in an exceptionally emotional manner accompanied by Mrs . Mendoza on guitar were an instant sensation at the club and they were hired for $10 per night plus tips! San Antonio was not only one of the largest Spanish speaking communities in the US but was already a military training center during the 1940s and World War II , thus assuring the soulful duet an additional audience . Juanita and Maria did well indeed and about this time the Mendoza family was finally able to buy their first home largely with the earnings from this new Mendoza family dueto. Juanita in the meanwhile was becoming quite fond of one of the boys working at the Bohemia and when the rival Pullman Bar made them an offer of $15 per night plus all tips , mother Leonora took the offer as she not only liked the additional income but had no great fondness for the suitor!

In 1946 the whole Mendoza family resumed their touring with Lydia once again as the star attraction. Maria and Juanita , however, had developed a solid following and were now a very popular attraction and part of the Mendoza show. Empresario Ramiro Cortez booked the family act in California, Arizona, New Mexico and as Lydia resumed her recording career the opportunity finally arrived for Las Hermanitas Mendoza to make their own debut on records. During the war years the recording business had come to a standstill. These recordings you hear on this album were made on several occasions in Los Angeles for the Azteca label w hile the family was on tour between 1946 and 1952.

The dueto of Juanita and Maria became an increasingly popular attraction not only a t the live shows but now also on records which the girls made in large numbers for a lmost every Spanish language label throughout Texas and California. These record companies sprang up trying to meet the growing de mand from j uke box operators and tavern patrons . In those

days before much Spanish radio and of course no TV as yet, the juke boxes were the main outlets for new songs and artists. (Several other songs by Juanita and Maria Mendoza can be heard on Folklyric LP 9035: The First Women Duets. ) Juanita and Maria recorded literally hundreds of songs not only for Azteca Records, but fo r Ideal, Falcon , Alamo, Colonial , Sombrero, Imperia l, and others .

After six years of touring steadily for half the year and resting the other half at home in San Antonio , the Mendoza Family show and the wonderful duet of Juanita and Maria came to a halt in 1952. The reason was the death of mother Leonora w ho was the moving fo rce behind the whole organization . Juanita and Maria undertook a few more

tours on their own to Colorado b ut then Maria got married and their joint activi ties cam e to an end. Juanita continued to sing alone at La Casi ta Nightclub in San Antonio and her popularity continued th roughout the 1970s.

There have been other women d uels in the recorded history of Mexican-American music with Las Hermanas Padilla perhaps the most popular and earliest (heard on Folk lyric LP 9035: The First Women Duets) but lo my ears there was no other female duet w hich had the soulful and ear thy honesty of the Mendoza sisters: Juanita and Maria. Although most of the songs are sung from a man 's point of view, Juani ta and Maria put so much feeling into them that these records have not been equaled for

sheer emotional input in the anals of Musi ca Tejana! The songs on this LP range from old ones learned from mother Leonora (" Pero Lupita" and "So11.equeme jurabas" )tonew compositions from the period , and juke box fa vori tes . " Mi Pensa m iento" by Luis Moreno was probably the biggest hit of the lot. The on ly song from a woman 's viewpoint is " El Resbaloso" by Miguel Salas. The last song on the album "Por ahi se dice", although a man 's song, has a woman 's part: the prayer to Saint Anthony. Of course most love songs can be sung both ways and it was love songs in the ranchera style w hich were the most popular material of this period, and Juanita & Maria were one of the best duetos to sing them!

jAy! pensamiento dile, " si me quieres,"

(repeat verse 4)

My Thought

M y thought always goes with you \il y thought has been loyal to you , I li ve always thinking of your love And who knows if you ever think of it.

Oh' thought you arc sincere Oh! thought you are right , In a sigh go and tell my beloved T hat I 'm dying from waiting so long.

l:lecause a love that is true Robs one's tranquil ity and makes

one rest less, Because I love you with all my soul I don' t want anyone else but you.

Oh' thought tell her, "if you love me," With her promises that time erased, Tell her that in my soul they are engraved And they' ll only die when I die.

Oh' what happiness when I 'm dreaming of you

And you are em passioned in my arms, Oh' thought don't be so cruel Tell me that she' ll return , that you will

bring her.

( repeat verse 3)

I Dreamed That You Vowed to Mc

I dreamed that you vowed to me To love me eterna lly, And with ardent passion I gave you all my love.

I dreamed that out in the count ry To the sound of the palms, Our sou ls were uni ted In a kiss of love.

But now you don ' t love me What's more today you desert me, Because of anol her lover Who you don' t deserve.

Tomorrow you' ll be Scorned by that lover, Tomorrow you' ll come searching for me But then you won't find me.

(repeat verse 4)

Algun dia (Rafael Villareal)

(repeat verse 3)

(repeat verse 3 twice)

(Chris Strachwitz- 1984)

Someday

I 'm going now, I say goodbye crying Lord knows i f I 'l l ever see you again, I 'm going now because vou don't love

me anymore There I leave you cruel woman .

I bear jealousy and feel ings That weigh me down and make me

suffer, It 's that you didn't know how to love me What can I do about it? It was my turn

to lose.

A lthough you don't want me I ' ll never be able to forget you , The love that I feel for you is so great That i t j ust makes me want to cry.

Now I 'm going to lose myself in the world

I don' t know what wi ll become of me, Why should I want to li ve this life~ Without your love I won' t be happy.

I ' ll suffer through my sad lot in li fe Someday my luck must change, It 's God's wi l l and this is mv fate It ' ll be my punishment to suffer and

sorrow.

(repeat verse 3)

Each Time That I Remember

Each time that I remem ber It makes me want to cry, For a love that I had A nd that I cannot forget.

Each time the memories come I see where our love began, The memories are tears and sighs for me Oh! how cruel was your love.

Your memory has remained for me The taste of your love, I thinking of her caresses The love of that woman.

With faith I asked Cupid For a remedy in order to forget, He also cried wi th me Upon seeing my fatal dest iny.

M y friends advise me Want ing to console me T hat I should let some time pass A nd that flower wi ll be mine again .

( repeat verse 3 twice)

Dos seres que se aman (P.J . Gonzalez)

(repeat)

(repeat verses 3 & 4)

Two Beings That Love One Another

Two beings that love one another A nd that have wanted each other, A re not afraid of oblivion Nor do they fear to die.

W hen I go away I'm not a love'em and lcave'em type, I ' l l gi ve you my picture As a proof of love.

Four lit tle doves Became lost in their flight , A nd they abandoned T heir fi rst love .

I ask heaven A nd divine Providence, That I be allowed To see you again.

Remember the place The enchanting place, Where you caressed M y first love.

Upon kissing You trembled and I trembled, Upon caressing you You loved me and I loved you.

T he locks of hair that you gave me I have them with me, I entertain myself with them T hrough endless nights.

Goodbye forever Forever goodbye, When wi ll we see each other Together again''

What a Cute Dark Gal

What cute eyes my dark gal has Prett y clothes, what a good looking

how to love.

(repeat)

Oh! what martyrdom when I remember The little kiss that she gave me, I kissed her mouth that 's so mysterious That I'll never forget i t in my life.

I don' t know what I feel for that dark gal With her li ttle mouth l ike the flower of

verdad .

The Smooches

Don't start giving me smooches Don ' t be silly and have bad intentions, Your wild passions are in va in Because I won ' t come back in the end

anyhow.

Because you've said that I 'm really mean That I 'm gett ing drunk over your love, It doesn't mat1er to me that now you

don't love me I won't ever love you again either.

If you found yourself a carouser For the time being you're set up woman, It 's for sure he's a heavy smoker A real veteran with Muscatel wi ne.

You thought that I was such a foo l But what bad judgement you had

woman, Get away with your debauchery It's not so easy to make me stumble.

Because the smart deer Goes down to the pasture at sunrise, Yes, I loved you, but now I don 't So you won't go around talking woman.

If you once were my heaven Today I have someone to take your

place, Because the smart deer Goes down to the pasture at sunrise.

Manuelita

Where are you Manueli ta? I wanted to greet you, When I pass by your house Now you don't even want to show

yourself, Tell me i f you don't have a chance to So I won' t bother you anymore .

Your fr iends give me the word That I won't kiss you again , T hat your hand is asked for and given That you're going to make an

announcement, If you get married Manuelita Afterwards I 'm going to visit you.

The vows that we made I keep them in my mind, You played with two decks of cards But I was unaware, It doesn't matter to me Manuelita A love doesn' t feel pain .

M y fr iends tease me And say that I am a coward, That your fiance and your brothers Want to kill me by treachery, It doesn't matter to me M anuelita For your love I 'm ready to die.

I Live on a Drinking Spree

Just for fun I like to go drinking Since I was young it was no big thing

ro me, When I drink I like to go out singing From night tit the break of day.

Just for fun I li ve on a drinking spree With my drinking buddies I 've always

been rel iable, I li ke to make the night rounds When I feel the hankering to drink.

The buddies that I have are not cultured They just sponge and hang on, A ll the time they go around with me But it 's hard to squeeze a nickel out

o f them.

I don' t like to get mixed up with the young guys

T hat with one drink they're ready to f ight ,

1 'm a man and I tell it to you straight So don't get r iled, it 's the out and

out truth .

Pero Lupita (Leonora Mendoza)

jAy!

Suspiro y digo .,,en d6nde estara mi amada? jay! suerte ingrata, i,d6nde estara, d6nde estara?

Vol6 y se fue a las cumbres de un olivo y me dej6 con el coraz6n herido.

Suspiro y digo .,,en d6nde estara mi amada7

jay' suerte ingrata, i,d6nde estara, d6nde estara?

Tu sentencia (Luis Moreno)

(repeat)

But Lupita

Oh ' Lupita How sad are my laments Because I fi nd That I can' t count on you.

I sigh and say Oh where could my love be? Oh! cruel luck, Where could she be, where could she be0

She flew off and left To the top of an ol ive tree And left me With a wounded heart.

I sigh and say Oh where could my love be'' Oh! cruel luck, Where could she be, where could she be''

Your Sentence

Yesterday afternoon I signed your sentence

God wi ll mete out your punish111cn 1, You'll li ve without love or affection You'll pay me the ou tstanding debts.

I feel a hate that burns my soul Like a dagger stabbed in my chest, So many times I curse your name That God is witness and has to

forgive me.

I 'm not going to be one of those foo ls That let themselves get taken by

surpri se, With me you have to play it straight I ' ll teach yon-how to deal with people.

I'm not complaining because you left me

That alt hough I 'm poor. I won't lack anyth ing,

What burns me up is that you deceived me

Because of that, later on it wi ll weigh on you.

I don ' t know what I would do if I saw you

If you're wi th another when I run into you,

It doesn't matter with whom or where I would stop them in their tracks as a

sign of their impending death .

( repeat verse 3)

The Slippery Guy

You go around saying that I ' m bad and deceit fu l

But I know that you' re talking from pure bi tterness,

Because with me now everything's finished for you

With me you whiled away the time being crooked and drunk,

Being lazy and imposing.

You just spent time sleeping in my house

And you got mad at times because I didn' t go to work,

You threa tened me with blows and bravado

For exactly that I had to trade you in For someone who's more of a man .

You ' re very slippery, slimey and you take advantage

Of the women who have always supported you,

Now for that I won 't have anything more to do wi th you

I 'm going with another ten times better than you.

(repeat)

(repeat woman 's part)
