Vern Lis le served 22 years in leg islature; services May 14

Former Sta:e Senator Charles Vernon ''Vern'' Lisle. 75, died at the Heritage House in Atlantic this past Thursday with graveside services held ar 2:30pm Sunday.

.-\ native o f Clarinda , Sen. Lisle had served in the Iowa l egislature for 11 sessions. including one term as speaker of the House of Re presentatives. He "'as first elected in 1949 to serve in the 53rd Gene ral Assembly as Page Count_:, ' s representat ive. and was speak er pro-tem in 1957 before being el~ted speaker in 1959. Four years later he won a 3-way race to rep resen t Page and Fremont counties in the Iowa Senate. He continued in the legislature through 1970, the first year of annual sessions.

He "'as presidenl of lisle CorporatiOn from 1937 until1970 as the third generation president of t he local corporation, succ~ed ing his fathe r, Edwin Lisle Sr.

\fr. Lisle also was a member of the Clarinda schooi board in the 1940s and was a strong advocate of the junior college program throughout his entire life. He had been in one of the early classes of the Clarinda Junior College , and helped administer the school while on the school board. \Vhile in the leg.islature . one o f his projects was seeking legislation to increase the amount of state aid to the j unior colleges. raising it from 25 cents per student per day when he went to Des Moines to $2.25 when he retired from the legislatu re.

\ 1r. Lisle was born Oct. I, 1906. at the fanlily home o n West Willow to Edwin lisle Sr. and Edith Crane lisle. After attending Clarinda schools he attended the University o f Iowa and was graduated from •he University o f :\.1ichigan \lo-ith a bachelor of science in civil engineering.

He was married to Do rothy Schwimme r in 1929 , who .:urrently is living in Omaha. They had two children. Ed S. lisle who

died m 1977 and Charles V. lisle Jr. of Clarinda.

He was a ' -time winner of the Clarinda Men 's Open Golf title and had a strong interest in aviation, holding a commercial and · inst rument rating pilot's license. ·

He was a member of the : larinda United me th odist Church, the Nodaway Masonic lodge and many other groups in Clarinda. He had served on the board of directors of the Iowans for Right to Work and ,-.·as an · officer of the Iowa Manufacturers' Association .

Besides h is son, Charies and his wife Doris, Mr. Lisle is survived by his wife Anabel Cole lisle of Clarinda. a brother Edwin of Clarinda, and sisters Edith Lisle of Clarinda, Helen Greenlee of Boul d er , Co; an d Marcia Postlewaite o f Columbus. Oh; fou; grandchi ld ren and one great· gra ndson.

Rev. Harland Gan; and Rev . Ron Swedberg o fficia ted at the graveside services Sunday at the Clari nda Cemetery. The memorial service will be held at the Clarinda United Methodist Chu rch with Walker-Merrick Funeral Home making arrangements.
