KamilatappedMadisynontheshoulderandsaid,“Lookit!”Shedroppedthemarblein,itrolleddowntherampandthuddeddownontheflooragain.Madisynlaughed.Shelikedtheidea.

Kamilaaddedawholehandfulofmarbles,whichwasprettyheavy.Theyellowrampbegantotip,soshesupportedittokeepitfromfalling.Themarblesrolleddownmakingthatsamesoundaseachhitthecarpet:thud,thud,thud,thud,thud,thud,thud.

ThesoundattractedMadisyn’sattention.SheshoutedexcitedlyatwhatKamilahaddone,“Kamila!”

Kamilaleftandreturnedwithanotherramp.“Ifoundanotherone,”shesaid.

Thechildrenmayrisetothechallengesweoffertofurtheranengagementinphysics.Ifthisoneeventwereposted,retold,andreviewed,thiskindofengagementcouldbringmorechildrenintotheplaytoaddnewideasandpossiblydevelopanewcultureatourschool.Thechildrenmightcontributeideasthatexpandthewaystousethematerialsandfurthertheirsocialengagementinacommunityofaction.

Theresultmightbeashiftinhowfamilies,educatorsandchildrenthinkaboutwhatitmeanstogotoschool.Wemightcometothinkofourselvesasacommunitythatinvolvesallofusinacontinuing,inventiveinvestigationofhowthingswork.

Whenwetaketimetoreallythinkaboutplay,tothinktogethertodeeplyconsideroneeventandtoaltertheenvironmentone,two,orthreestepsfurther,wecanchangeourculture,stepbystep,tocreateanenvironmentasathirdteacher.Wecanalsocelebratesmartgirlsatwork.Smartstuffiswhatwedoatschool.Allofus.
