Key Ergonomic Considerations

• Consultation with Users is key• No-one knows the application better• Sometimes users may not have been exposed to

alternative solutions – “you don’t know what you don’t know”

• Recognition that equipment is highly customised for specific applications

• An integral part of risk management• Use of specialists• No two applications end up being exactly the

same• What may be perfect for one may be poor for another


Joy Approaches to Ergonomics

• Have been heavily centred around specific markets• Customer consultation has been localised on

specific products• The most successful outcomes have been

achieved where high levels of interaction have been achieved during the engineering and build phases of a machine

• Joy’s Zero Harm strategy rolled out globally

• New process required… being implemented on new 12ED25 miner bolter

12CM30 Miner Bolter• Comprehensive consultation during build of a

machine in NSW (2008-2009)• Increase in platform space on miner

• Improved potential to store items in the “best” locations

• Improved work area for 2 people to work together• Removal of trip hazards and loose hoses• Replacement of many hoses with hard pipes

• Improved maintainability, reduced risks• Ventilation ducting

• Cleaner air for operators to work in

• Recognises that primary use of 12CM30 miner bolter is as a bolting machine which cuts

• Reorientation of drill rigs• Many configurations now in use, driven through

ergonomic reviews with numerous minesites• Anti fatigue non-slip flooring
