The majestic mountain is now a favorite Irish pilgrimage destination. Cobh was also the last port of call for the Titanic before she sank. Naturally, we will also have some time for a ‘spirited’ visit to the famous Jameson Irish whiskey distillery. May 10, Thursday – Day 10: EXCURSION TO DROGHEDA, SLANE & TARA Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at our hotel before heading to The Boyne Valley and to Bru Na Boinne, the largest and one of the most important pre historical Megalithic sites in Ireland. The site is a complex mound of chamber tombs standing stones and other prehistorical enclosures dating back from early 3500 B.C. We celebrate Mass at St Peter’s Church in Drogheda and visit the Relic of St Oliver’s Head. Our next destination today is Monasterboice, one of Ireland’s earliest Christian sites where we see the Round Tower, the magnificent High Crosses and the remains of two churches. We’ll continue to the nearby Olde Mellifont Abbey which was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, founded in 1142 by Saint Malachy. After lunch on our own, we head west to Slane Hill where St. Patrick proclaimed Christianity in 433 AD by lighting the paschal fire. On the Hill is a 16th century church built on the site of the ancient church founded by Saint Patrick. We will also tour one of Ireland’s most iconic castles, Slane Castle. Our wonderful day ends at the Hill of Tara in the Boyne Valley, a ceremonial site associated with kingship rituals. From the time of the first Celtic influence until the Norman invasion in the 12th Century, the Hill of Tara was Ireland’s political and spiritual capital. The King of Tara represented a very old ideal of sacred kingship in Ireland, imbued with mythical aura. Tonight we have a festive Irish evening at a local pub. Overnight in Dublin. (B, Farewell dinner)
