Amazing Family Retreat on January 17th & 18th, 2015 at Egan Camp & Retreat Center. This retreat will be full of family activities, break-out sessions on Parenting/Relationship Skills, Worship and Family Fellowship. What a great time to get away to encounter God as a family on this Holy Ground. Registration costs will vary depending on the length of stay and number in your family. Average cost per family, $210. A $50 save-our-spot deposit is due September 28th. For more information and exact costs, contact Corrina Robinson, Director of Children’s Ministries.

After the meal is served (around 6pm) we need a few people to help get the kitchen and worship center back in order. In the spring of 2015 our current Shalom Meal Coordinators would like to pass the torch on to someone new. Join them this fall to get an idea of what is needed. Please contact Julia Griffin or Mendi Burns 918-508-9276 or [email protected] with questions or to volunteer on Wednesday evenings.

A Classical Evening of Thanksgiving will be on Sunday, November 23rd at 6:00pm. Some of our more “seasoned” musicians in the church are going back and dusting off some recital and contest solos that they performed many years ago and are preparing to present them again in a special musical recital. The evening’s musical selections will include vocal, instrumental, bells, piano and organ selections. Everyone is invited to attend and to ask someone to attend with you. Please mark your calendar for this wonderful evening.

This beginner’s level handbell choir is primarily for children in 5th grade and older. Younger children may participate on a case-by-case basis through an audition process. This choir generally uses the hand chimes until they graduate to the handbells. Traditionally, this choir meets to practice Sunday evenings starting about 6:30pm. Students learn the importance of music in Worship and the commitment required to participate in an ensemble group. Rehearsals will begin September 7th. Contact director, James Schrag at: [email protected] for more information.

This handbell choir is primarily for older youth who graduate from the Genesis Ringers. Also, youth with past handbell experience or who have a strong background in music are encouraged to join. In addition, the ROF is featured in concerts, festivals and camp events. Traditionally, this choir meets Wednesday evenings starting promptly at 7:15pm. Ring of Fire (ROF)

This handbell choir is our church’s original handbell choir established in the fall of 1999. It is a multi-generational choir composed of exceptional youth and adult musicians. New musicians are always invited and strongly encouraged to join. Aspiring musicians may join as an understudy while learning the art of handbell music. The choir regularly participates in the Arise and Shine service. This choir also participates in activities such as weddings, funerals, festivals and concerts. Traditionally, the Believers Bell Choir meets to practice on Thursday evenings starting promptly at 7:00pm and ending around 8:00pm. Contact director, Steven Eddington at: [email protected] for more information.

Prayer Retreat in November

We are having a retreat on November 14, 15 and 16 at Camp Egan. Reverend Chuck Horton will lead the weekend. We will be looking at the book “Prayer: The Heart’s True Home” by Richard Foster. So mark your calendar now. More information will be coming. We will leave from the church Friday evening, November 14th.

Prayer Ministries @ FUMC

At FUMC Owasso, we pray. We pray to lift up others for healing, we pray for salvation and we pray in the name of Jesus. We have experienced the power of prayer at work in our lives and the lives of others for whom we pray. You can send out a prayer request to our prayer team by emailing it to: [email protected] If you would like to be added to this vital prayer ministry team, and to the prayer chain, send an email to [email protected].

If you are new to the church and want to know more about the church and the different ministries, please come to rooms 121/123 at 12:20 as our guests. Putting God first SPRC Adds Two to Staff

We have two exciting additions to our FUMC Owasso Staff! On Sunday evening, August 24th 2014 our church’s Staff Parrish Relations Committee (SPRC) met. One of the things that they discussed was the hiring of a new Building and Facilities Superintendent which has been a vacant position since the end of May. The SPRC has hired Rev. Richard Whetsell to fill the position in a paid capacity effective Sept. 1st, 2014. Richard is a retired United Methodist pastor and has been serving on our staff as a volunteer assistant pastor for the past two years. In addition to his pastoral ministry, Richard has a number of years of experience in construction and as a general contractor for commercial buildings. The SPRC also announces that they are also placing on staff, as an unpaid volunteer, David Hairston as the Assistant Building and Facilities Superintendent also effective Sept. 1st,2014. David is one of our newest members. He is a recently retired aerospace engineer with a great deal of experience in various construction projects and overall building maintenance. We feel like these two gentlemen are going to work very well together and will make great additions to our staff. Please help Richard and David to feel welcome as they transition into these new roles.

Putting God first During the month of October, our church will hear about God’s generosity and our response as we experience our stewardship program, first: putting GOD first in living and giving, developed by author and pastor Mike Slaughter of Ginghamsburg Church. There will be opportunities in worship, in gatherings, in youth and children’s classes, and in devotions that can be used at church or at home. Over the four weeks, we’ll be challenged in a number of different ways. We’ll be asked to look for the idols in our lives (Hint: Most of them aren’t animals made of gold) and name the ways these idols enslave us, holding us back from living in the true freedom that God desires for us. We’ll be challenged to consider the place that money, work, and debt have in our own lives. What are our common understandings of these, and might the witness of Scripture lead us to some different understandings? We’ll be challenged to ask ourselves what it means for us to be faithful, to save, and to give. How do we balance all the competing interests in our lives? What priorities does God want us to have? Finally, we’ll be challenged to give with our hearts, not out of obligation or a sense of duty and not just when we think the recipient deserves our gift. Instead, we’ll be challenged to give the way God gives—freely, fully, with no favorites or expectations of repayment. It is our prayer that, at the end of these four weeks, we will have begun to grow into the individuals and the church that God knows we can be. Please join us in first: putting GOD first in living and giving. If you would be interested in hosting or facilitating a small group, please contact Jim Patton at 918-557-4623, [email protected], or Traci Patton 918-557-4624, [email protected]

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer -- 3 simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying "Yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, family member or neighbor. QPR can be learned in our Gatekeeper course in as little as one hour. Register at http://www.magalassifoundation.org *Free T-shirt for first 25 adults and first 25 youth who register. *Free QPR Training *For Adults and Youth ages 14 and up *Recognize warning signs of suicide *Know how to offer hope and get help *Receive QPR Certificate—great for resumes *Earn Continuing Professional *Education Credit *SAVE A LIFE!
