BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Industry associations continue to
lobby against the 25 percent tari s imposed on Chinese-
made electric bikes and motors. But many suppliers and
retailers say most premium brands typically sold at IBDs
are not a ected, since these bikes don’t come from China.
Instead, the bigger impact appears to be on direct-to-
consumer brands and on electric share bikes and scooters,
where price is a much bigger concern. “We’ve focused a little more on premium brands. Most
of them are not making their bikes in China, so it hasn’t
really had as much of an impact on us,” said Chris Nolte,
owner of Propel Electric Bikes in Brooklyn, New York, and,
soon, a second location in Long Beach, California.

DURHAM, N.C. — Following an “intense” bankruptcy
auction that extended into the early morning hours, the
owners of Head Sports — a European sports brand best
known for its skis and rackets — came away the likely
new owner of Advanced Sports Enterprises, including
Performance Bicycle stores and the Fuji, SE, Kestrel and
Breezer bike brands. At press time Head representatives were not available to
comment on their plans for ASE if its purchase agreement
was approved by the court at a Jan. 22 hearing. Performance
regional managers told store employees they expected
Head to keep 60 of its 102 stores open. But the morning
a er the auction an ASE executive told BRAIN she had no
idea what Head’s plans were. Taiwan’s Ideal Bike could challenge ASE’s decision to ac-
cept Head’s o er of $21.5 million. Ideal is both a creditor
and a partial owner ASE. It has manufactured bikes for the
company for years. At the auction Ideal and three partners
o ered $22.5 million for ASE’s assets.
Head Sports agrees to buy ASE for $21.5MIdeal Bike, a stakeholder and creditor
of ASE, could challenge deal.
