MAKING COMMITTEES

MORE DIVERSE

Local leaders have a new partnership

that they hope will get more women

to serve on the city’s advisory boards.

Self mum on former Adidas consultant’s ties to KUUniversity of Kansas bas-

ketball coach Bill Self, shortly after KU’s annual media day Wednesday, declined to com-ment on the testimony of for-mer Adidas consultant T.J. Gassnola regarding his rela-tionship with Kansas.

At a federal fraud trial in New York, Gassnola, who pleaded guilty to wire fraud

charges in March and is coop-erating with the government

in the case, testified that a cadre of fixers conducted covert “black ops” to fun-nel secret cash payments to the families of top prospects, including former KU player Billy Preston and current KU player Silvio De Sousa.

“I can’t talk about that,” Self said. “And I’m not meaning to be opaque about this at all. I just feel that our stance is still the same. We’ll comment when the time’s appropriate. And the appropriate time is when this is done.”

The university has previous-ly declined to comment to the Journal-World about the ongo-ing trial.

The City of Lawrence has be-gun working with a foundation to get more women involved in the advisory boards that help inform city decision-making.

About 40 boards provide the city recommendations or over-sight on a broad range of topics, including affordable housing,

public transit, fair policing, eco-nomic incentives and the arts. The results of a voluntary diver-sity survey conducted by the city indicate that only 39 percent of respondents from these boards said they were women.

Two friends were both convict-ed in August of killing Cameron Hooks, shooting another man and

threatening a third man with a gun at the North Law-rence Motel 6.

One of those friends will go to prison for more than 23 years, while the other was sentenced to just under 10 years Wednes-day in Douglas County District Court.

Tyrone J. Carvin, 20, of Kansas City, Kan., was sentenced to a total of 286 months in prison.

General Dynamics call center will soon have new owner

One of Lawrence’s largest employers soon will have a new owner. The Gen-

eral Dynamics call center in the East Hills Business Park is part of a $400 million deal that will transfer ownership to a compa-ny that specializes in operating

customer service centers for the federal government.

A General Dynam-ics spokesman confirmed Wednesday that the call cen-ter at 3833 Greenway Drive is part of a pending purchase by Reston, Va.-based Maximus.

The deal is expected to be finalized in mid-November.

The Lawrence center at times has had more than a thousand employees providing customer service support for everything from student loan programs to federal health insurance plans.

Jeff Davis, a spokesman for Gen-eral Dynamics, said he couldn’t provide specific job totals for the center, but said its employee totals were still in the range of hundreds of people.

Fixer says he brokered deals involving De Sousa, Preston
