Tobacco and Society: • Tobacco is a HUGE business in the
United States.
• Tobacco companies spend $42 million on advertising and promotions EVERY DAY!!!!!
• Tobacco companies are constantly losing customers everyday because they are quitting or dying.
• Therefore they want to attract new users.
WHO DO THEY WANT TO ATTRACT????
Children & Teenagers!!!!
• Children and teens represent the most profitable market.
Children and teens have their whole life ahead of them, that’s why tobacco companies want them as their new customers (a customer for life).
Why are children and teens so valuable to the tobacco
companies??????

Tobacco AddictionDespite the high personal costs and health risks alarge number of people continue to smoke orchew tobacco. This is because they have formed anaddiction.
Physical Dependence-- A type of addiction in which the body
itself feels a direct need for a drug.
Nicotine affects body temperature, heart rate, digestion, and muscle tone.
-Tobacco users DO NOT feel normal unless their body is under the influence of nicotine.
Psychological Dependence--an addiction in which the mind sends the
body a message that it needs the drug (nicotine).
- Events , situations, and habits trigger a desire to use tobacco.

Withdrawal-- The physical and psychological symptoms
that occur when someone stops using an addictive substance.

2 types of secondhand smoke:1. Mainstream smoke - the smoke that the

2. Sidestream smoke – smoke coming off the burning end of the cigarette.
Secondhand smoke can cause pneumonia and bronchitis.
Infants and children who are exposed to secondhand smoke have more colds, allergies, ear infections and asthma than children who are not exposed to secondhand smoke.
