and use your new room heater. If this room heater is not properly installed, a house fire may result. To reduce the risk of fire, follow the installation instructions. Failure to follow these instructions may result in property damage, bodily injury, or loss of life.

• Contact the local building or fire officials about restrictions and installation inspection requirements in your area.

• Do not connect this stove to any air distribution duct or system.

• Extremely hot while in operation! Keep children, clothing and furniture away. Contact will cause skin burns. Use a child guard screen to prevent accidental contact by small children.

• Install smoke detectors in the living areas and bedrooms of your home. Test them regularly and install new batteries twice annually.

When installed in the same room as the stove, a smoke detector should be located as far from the stove as possible to prevent it from sounding when adding fuel to the fire.

• Avoidcreatingalowpressureconditionintheroomwherethestoveisoperating.Beawarethatoperationofanexhaustfanorclothesdryercancreatealowpressureareaandconsequentlypromoteflowreversalthroughthestoveandchimneysystem,causingpotentialforcarbonmonoxidetoenterthelivingarea.Thechimneyandbuildingworktogetherasasystem-provisionofoutsideair,directlyorindirectlytoanatmosphericallyventedappliancewillnotguarantyproperchimneyperformance.ConsultyourlocalJøtulauthorizeddealerregardingspecificinstallation/performanceissues.

• Werecommendthatthisstovebeinstalledbyaprofessionalsolidfueltechnicianorthatyouconsultoneifyoudotheworkyourself.Also,consultyourinsurancecompanyregardinganyotherspecificrequirements.

1.0 InstallationIf this solid fuel room heater is not properly installed, a house fire may result. For your safety, follow the installation directions. Contact the local building or fire officials about restrictions and installation inspection requirements in your area.

Yourlocalofficialshavefinalauthorityindeterminingifaproposedinstallationisacceptable.Anyrequirementbythelocalauthorityhavingjurisdictionthatisnotspecificallyaddressedinthismanual,defaultstoNFPA211,andlocalcodesintheU.S.orinCanada,CAN/CSA-B365-Mandlocalcodes.

1.1 Unpack the StoveInspectthestovefordamage.Contactyourdealerimmediatelyifanydamageisfound.Donotinstallthestoveifanydamageisevident.Contactyourdealer.

1.4 Bottom Heat Shield InstallationThe bottom heat shield must be installed unless the stove hearth is composed of poured concrete on earth or unless an Outside Air Kit is installed. 1. Unfoldonlytherearpanelofthebottomheatshieldand

placeitunderthestoveasshowninfig.3.2. Unfoldthesidepanels.3. Theheatshieldattachestothefourstudsprotruding

fromthestovebottom.Removethefourpre-installedM6flangeheadhexnutsandusethemtoattachtheshield.Seefig.4.

1.5 Chimney ConnectorUse6”singlewallorlisted6”double-wallstovepipetoconnectthestovetothechimney.Singlewallstovepipemustbeblacksteelorstainlesssteelandhaveaminimumthicknessof24gauge.Donotusealuminumorgalvanizedsteelpipeforchimneyconnection-thesematerialsarenotsuitableforusewithsolidfuel.

Followtheseguidelines:• Donotusechimneyconnectorasachimney.Itisintend-

edonlyasaconnectiondevice.• Eachconnectorsectionmustbeorientedwiththemale

(crimped)endpointingtowardthestove.Seefig.5.• Secureallconnectorjointswiththreesheetmetal

screws.TheconnectiontothestovefluecollarusesthetwoM6x16mmself-tappingscrewsprovided.

• Forthebestperformance,thechimneyconnectorshouldbeasshortanddirectaspossible,includingnomorethantwo90°elbows.

• The maximum vertical run of single wall stovepipe should not exceed 10 ft. (305 cm).

• The maximum horizontal run should not exceed 3 ft. (92 cm) with a 1/4” rise per foot.Undernocircumstanceshouldhorizontalpipebeallowedtoslantdowntowardthechimney.

• Nopartofthechimneyconnectormaypassthroughanatticorroofspace,closetorotherconcealedspace,orthroughafloororceiling.Allsectionsofthechimneyconnectorsmustbeaccessibleforcleaning.Wherepas-sagethroughawallorpartitionofcombustiblecon-structionisdesired,theinstallationmustconformwithNFPA211orCAN/CSA-B365,andisalsoaddressedinthismanual.

• Do not connect this stove to a chimney flue serving another appliance.

2.0 Chimney RequirementsTherearetwotypesofapprovedchimneys:

1.Acode-approvedmasonrychimneywithaceramictileorlistedsteelflueliner.

2. AprefabricatedchimneycomplyingwiththerequirementsforTypeHT(2100°F)chimneysperUL103orULCS629.

Thechimneysizeshouldnotbelessthanthecross-sectionalareaofthefluecollar,andnotmorethanthreetimesgreaterthanthecross-sectionalareaofthefluecollar.Ifthechimneyflueisoutdoors,itscross-sectionalareamaynotexceedtwotimesgreaterthanthestovefluecollar.SeealsoSect.3.2.

Whenselectingachimneytypeandthelocationforthechimneyinthehouse,keepthisinmind:It is the chimney that makes the stove work - not the stove that makes the chimney work.Thisisbecauseachimneyactuallycreatesasuction,called“draft”whichpullsairthroughthestove.

Severalfactorsaffectdraft:chimneyheight,cross-sectionalarea(size),andtemperatureofthechimney,aswellastheproximityofsurroundingtreesorbuildings.

Ashortexteriormasonrychimneywillgivethepoorestperformancebecauseitwillbedifficulttowarmtheflueandsustainthetemperaturesnecessarytomaintaindraftstrength.Inextremelycoldclimates,itmaybenecessarytorelinethechimneyorextendtheheighttohelpestablishdraft.

Atall,interiormasonrychimneyiseasiertokeepwarmandwillperformthebestunderavarietyofweatherandenvironmentalconditions.

Thefollowingguidelinesgivethenecessarychimneyrequirementsbasedonthenationalcode(ANSI-NFPA211fortheUS.AndCSACAN-B365forCanada).However,manylocalcodesdifferfromthenationalcodetotakeintoaccountclimate,altitude,orotherfactors.Yourlocalbuildinginspectoristhefinalapprovingauthority.Consultthempriortoinstallation.

Do not connect the stove to any air distribution duct or system.

2.1 Masonry ChimneysFollowtheseguidelineswheninstallingtheJøtulF50TLintoamasonryfireplace:

• Themasonrychimneymusthaveafireclaylinerorequivalent,withaminimumthicknessof5/8”(14mm)andmustbeinstalledwithrefractorymortar.Theremustbeatleast1/2”(12.7mm)airspacebetweenthefluelinerandchimneywall.

• Thefireclayfluelinermusthaveanominalsizeof8”X8”(20cmx20cm),andshouldnotbelargerthan8”X12”(20cmx30cm).Aroundfireclaylinermusthaveaminimuminsidediameterof6”(15cm)andmaximuminsidediameterof8”(20cm).Alargerchimneyshouldberelinedwithanappropriatecodeapprovedliner.

• Brickormodularblockmustbeaminimumof4”(10cm)nominalthickness.Stoneconstructionmustbeatleast12”(30cm)thick.

• Anewly-builtchimneymustconformtolocalcodes,or,intheirabsence,mustcomplywithnationalregulations.

• Anexistingchimneymustbeinspectedbyaprofessional,licensedchimneysweep,fireofficial,orcodeofficertoensurethatthechimneyisinproperworkingorder.Anyrepairsmustbecompletedbeforeinstallingthestove.

• Nootherappliancemaybeventedintothesameflue.

• Anairtightclean-outdoorshouldbelocatedatthebaseofthechimney.

Theopeningmustbefilledwithatleast12”(30.5cm)ofbrickaroundafireclayliner.ThelinermustbeASTMC35orequivalent,havingaminimumwallthicknessof5/8”(16mm).

ThePass-throughmustbeatleast18”(45.7cm)fromcombustibleceilingmaterials.

Itwillbenecessarytocutwallstuds,installheaders,andconstructasillframetomaintaintheproperdimensionsandtosupporttheweightofthebrick.

Thebricksmustbesolidbrickwithaminimumof3inchesthick(nominal4”/102mm).

2.2 Prefabricated ChimneysAprefabricatedmetalchimneymustbetestedandlistedforusewithsolidfuelburningappliances.HighTemperature(HT)ChimneyStandardUL103fortheU.S.andHighTemperatureStandardULCS-629forCanada.

Themanufacturer’sinstallationinstructionsmustbefollowedprecisely.Alwaysmaintaintheproperclearancetocombustiblesasestablishedbythepipemanufacturer.Thisclearanceisusuallyaminimumof2”,althoughitmayvarybymanufacturerorforcertainchimneycomponents.

2.3 Chimney HeightThechimneymustbeatleast3feet(92cm)higherthanthehighestpointwhereitpassesthroughtheroofandatleast2feet(61cm)higherthanthehighestpartoftherooforstructurethatiswithin10feet(3.05m)ofthechimney,measuredhorizontally.

Chimneysshorterthan14feet(4.27m)maynotprovideadequatedraft.Inadequatedraftcanresultinsmokespillagewhenloadingthestove,orwhenthedoorisopen.Poordraftcanalsocausebackpuffing(ignitionofgasbuild-upinsidethefirebox)andsluggishperformance.Theminimumheightdoesnot,initself,guaranteeproperchimneyperformance.Optimumdraftforceshouldbeinthe.05-.10in.w.c.rangemeasuredbyaMagnahelicgauge.Draftat.07w.c.isideal.

Excessivechimneyheightcanpromoteover-strongdraftresultinginhighstovetemperaturesandshortburntimes.Excessivedraftcanbecorrectedbyinstallingabutterflydamper.YourJøtuldealerisanexpertresourcetoconsultregardingdraftissuesorotherperformance-relatedquestions.

2.4 Wall Pass-ThroughsNote:Inadditiontothemethodsdescribedhere,anylisted,prefabricatedwallpass-throughcomponentsavailablefromchimneymanufacurersmaybeused.

In the U.S.TheNationalFireProtectionAssociation’spublication,NFPA211,Standard for Chimneys, Fireplaces, Vents and Solid Fuel Burning Appliancespermitsfourmethodsforpassingthroughacombustiblewall.Beforeproceedingwithanymethodbesuretoconsultwithyourlocalbuildingofficialstodiscussanylocalcoderequirements.

3.2 Hearthmount into a Masonry FireplaceTheJøtulF50TLmaybeinstalledintoamasonryfireplacewithaminimumopeningheightof301/2”(77.5cm).NOTE:Thereisnoshortlegoption.DONOTALTERORREMOVETHELEGS.

Buildingcoderequiresthatthefireplacedamperplateberemovedorsecurelyfixedintheopenposition.Aconnectorpipemustthenextendfromthestove’sflueexitthroughthedamperareaofthefireplaceandintothechimneytileliner.Seefig. 10.Inanycase,werecommendthatafulllinerbeinstalledthroughanymasonrychimneytoensuregoodperformance.

Thecross-sectionalareaoftheflueofachimneywithnowallsexposedtotheoutsidebelowtherooflinemaybenomorethanthreetimesthecross-sectionalareaofthestovefluecollar.

In Canada TheinstallationmustconformtoCAN/CSA-B365,InstallationCodeforSolidFuelBurningAppliancesandEquipment.Beforeproceedingbesuretoconsultyourlocalbuildinginspector.

Thismethodrequirestheremovalofallcombustiblematerialsfromatleast18”(45.7cm)aroundthechimneyconnector’sproposedlocation.A6”roundlinerrequiresaminimumopening43”x43”(109.2x109.2)square.

Locatethepass-throughatleast18”fromcombustibleceilingmaterials.

Thespacethatisclearedofcombustiblematerialsmustremainempty.Sheetmetalpanelscanbeusedtocoverthearea.However,whenusingapanelonbothsidesofthewall,eachcovermustbeinstalledonnoncombustiblespacersatleast1”fromthewall.Ifonepanelofsheetmetalistobeuseditmaybeinstalledflushtothewall.

3.0 Connecting to the Chimney

3.1 Masonry ChimneyWheninstallingaJøtulF50TLintoamasonrychimneythrougha“thimble”(theopeningthroughthechimneywalltotheflue),thethimblemustconsistofceramictileorsteelandbesecurelycementedinplace.

Thechimneyconnector/stovepipemustslidecompletelyinsidethethimbletotheinnersurfaceortheflueliner.Itmaybenecessarytomakeuseofathimblesleeve(apipewithaslightlysmallerdiameterthanstandardstovepipe).Seefig. 9.

Theconnectorpipeorthimblesleevemustnotprotrudeintothefluelinerorotherwiserestrictdraft.

Userefractorycementtosealtheseambetweenthechimneyconnector,sleeve,andthimble.

Do not connect this stove to a chimney flue servicing another appliance of any kind.

Thecross-sectionalareaoftheflueofachimneywithoneormorewallsexposedtotheoutsidebelowtherooflinemaybenomorethantwotimesthecross-sectionalareaofthestovefluecollar.

Ifthechimneylineristoolargetoaccommodatethestove,anapprovedreliningsystemmustbeinstalledtoresizetheflue.

Anewsheetmetaldamperblock-offplatemustbeinstalledaroundtheconnectorpipeatthedamperframeandsealedwiththepropersealant(usuallyHigh-TempSilicone).

3.3 Prefabricated ChimneysWhenconnectingtheJøtulF50TL toaprefabricatedmetalchimneyalwaysfollowthepipemanufacturer’sinstructionsandbesuretousetheallcomponentsthatarerequired.Thisusuallyincludesa“smokepipeadapter”thatissecuredtothebottomsectionofthemetalchimneyandallowsthechimneypipetobesecuredtoitwithtwosheetmetalscrews.Seefig.11.

1.Allchimneycomponents,includingchimneysections,supports,sparkarrestor,etc.,shallcomplywiththeStandardforFactory-builtChimneysforResidentialTypeandBuildingHeatingAppliances,UL103and/orCAN/ULC-S629Standardfor650°CFactory-builtChimneys.

2.Thechimneyshallbeattacheddirectlytothestoveandextendatleast3ft.(0.9m)abovetheroof.Terminationmustbeatleast2ft.(0.6m)abovethehightestelevationofanypartofthemobilehomewithin10ft.(3m).

3.Inordertoallowfortransportationofthemobilehome,thechimneyterminationshallbereadilyremovedatorbelowanelevationof13.5ft.(4.1m)abovegroundlevelandreinstalledwithoutuseofspecialtoolsorinstructions.

4.Asparkarrestermustbeinstalledatthetermination.

In Canada,floorprotectionmustextend18”fromthefrontofthestoveand8in.(460mm)fromthesidesandrear.Itmustalsoextend2in.(51mm)underthechimneyconnector.Thisresultsinafloorprotector431/2in.x501/2in.(110.5cm.x128.2cm.)Seefig.12-a.

4.2 Clearances to Walls and CeilingsTheclearanceslistedanddiagramedinthismanualhavebeentestedtoULandULCstandardsandaretheminimumclearancestocombustiblematerialsspecificallyestablishedfortheJøtulF50TL.

Acombustiblesurfaceisanythingthatcanburn(i.e.sheetrock,wallpaper,wood,fabricsetc.).Thesesurfacesarenotlimitedtothosethatarevisibleandalsoincludematerialsthatarebehindnoncombustiblematerials.

Ifyouarenotsureofthecombustiblenatureofamaterial,consultyourlocalfireofficials.

Remember:“FireResistant”materialsareconsideredcombustible;theyaredifficulttoignite,butwillburn.Also“Fire-rated”sheetrockisalsoconsideredcombustible.

5.0 Operation

PleasereadthefollowingsectionbeforebuildingthefirstfireinyournewJøtulF50 TL.

5.1 Use Solid Wood Fuel OnlyThisstoveisdesignedtoburnnatural wood only.Woodthathasbeenair-driedforaperiodof6to14monthswillprovidethecleanest,mostefficientheat.

Do not burn:

• Coal •Treatedorpaintedwood• Garbage •ChemicalChimneycleaners• Cardboard •Coloredpaper• Solvents • Anysyntheticfuelorlogs• Driftwood •Laminatedwood

Theburningofanyofthesematerialscanresultinthereleaseoftoxicfumes.Neverusegasoline,gasoline-typelanternfuel,kerosene,charcoallighterfluid,orsimilarliquidstostartor“freshen-up”thefire.Alwayskeepsuchliquidsawayfromtheheateratalltimes.

Important:Neverbuildorallowthefiretorestdirectlyontheglasspanel.Trytokeepthelogsspacedatleastoneinchfromtheglasstoallowforproperairflowovertheglassandwithinthefirebox.

5.2 How your Jøtul F 50 TL worksWhenusedwithdrywoodandawell-draftingchimneysystem,modernnon-catalyticwoodstovesburnfuelefficientlybytheprecisecontrolanddeliveryofprimaryandsecondaryairtothefire.

Primary Airisdrawnintoafrontinletinthestovebottomanddirectedthrougharegulatorshutterunderthefrontdoorbeforeenteringthelowerfirechamber.Additionalprimaryairisdirectedtothetopofthefrontdoortoactasanairwashwhichmaypreventextremesootbuild-upontheglasspanel.Theamountofprimaryairavailabletothefiredeterminestheintensityofheatoutputandrateoffuelcombustion;thegreatertheamountofair,thegreatertheheatoutput,thefasterthewoodburns.Theprimaryairsettingalsodeterminestheeffectivenessoftheairwashovertheglass;thehigherthesetting,thecleanertheglass.

Additionalairisseparatelydirectedintothetopofthefirechambertosupportcombustionofexhaustgassesbeforepassingoutofthestove.ThisunregulatedSecondary Air entersthroughaninletintherearofthestovebottomandisheatedasitpassesthroughtherearofthestoveintoatwo-tieredmanifoldatthetopofthefirechamber.Additionalsecondaryairisdirectedthroughastainlesssteeltubebuiltintothebaffleplatehinge.Volatilegases,

WARNINGALWAYS WEAR STOVE GLOVES WHILE TENDING THE FIRE.NEVER ALLOW THE FIRE TO REST DIRECTLY ON THE GLASS. KEEP THE LOGS SPACED AT LEAST ONE INCH FROM THE GLASS TO ALLOW FOR PROPER AIR FLOW WITHIN THE STOVE. AVOID STRIKING THE GLASS WITH LOGS.

OPERATE THIS STOVE ONLY WITH THE FRONT DOOR AND ASH DOOR FULLY CLOSED. OPERATION WITH THE DOOR PARTIALLY OPEN MAY RESULT IN OVER-FIRING. IF THE DOOR IS LEFT PARTIALY OPEN, GAS AND FLAME MAY BE DRAWN OUT OF THE STOVE CREATING SAFETY RISKS FROM BOTH FIRE AND SMOKE.

5.3 Controlling the FireCombustionintensityiscontrolledbythepositionofanairshutterlocatedunderthefrontdoor.Youadjustitspositionusingthehandlelocatedundertheashlip.Slidethehandletothelefttodecreaseairtothefire.Slidingittotherightincreasesairdeliveryandconsequently,fireintensity.Seefig.17.Theshutterregulatesanddirectsprimaryairtothefrontoftheburnchamber.Pushittotherighttoallowmaximumairtosupportcombustion.Itshouldbefullyopenwhenfirststartingorrekindlingafire,orwhengreaterheatoutputisdesired.

5.5 Top LoadingYouwillwanttotakeadvantageoftheconvenienceofaddinglogstoaburningfirethroughthetopofyourstove.Thehingedheatexchangerbafflemustbeintheopenpositioninordertoaddwoodtothefirethroughthetopofthestove.Thebafflehandlecanbesetinanyoffourpositions,however,werecommendthatyouorientittomimictheorientationofthebaffleitself.;i.e.whenthesidehandleisinahorizontalposition,thebaffleisalsoinahorizontalposition-Closed.Swingthehandledownintoaverticalpositiontoopenthebaffle.Seefig.18andsection5.7formoredetails.

5.6 Break-In ProcedureAlthoughyourJøtulF50 TLisconstructedofwelded,1/4”steelplate,italsoincorporatescastironcomponents.Thismaterialrequiresthestovetobe“broken-in”graduallysothatheatexpansiondoesnotoccurtooquicklyandcausedamage.Thefollowingstepsdescribetheproperbreak-inprocedureforyourstove.Useamagneticstove-topthermometertomonitorstovetemperature,placeddirectlyonthecookplate.

SetthePrimaryAirShutterfullyopen,allthewaytotheright.1. Lightasmallfireofnewspaperandkindlingatthe

frontofthestove.Graduallyaddsmallpiecesofwood,butonlyallowthestovetoreachamaximumsurfacetemperatureof200°F(93°C).Continueburningatthislowrateforapproximately1hour.

2. Allowthestovetocooltoroomtemperature.3. Lightasecondfire,allowingthestovetoreacha

maximumtemperatureof300°F(149°C)for1hour.4. Coolthestovetoroomtemperature.5. Lightathirdfireandgraduallyallowthestovetoreacha

surfacetemperatureof400°F(204°C)6. Coolthestovetoroomtemperature.Thiscompletesthe

“break-in”procedure.Note: Ifthetemperatureexceedsthelimitduringanybreak-infire,movetheAirShutterallthewaytothelefttoshutofftheairsupplycompletely.Itisnormalthatthestovetoptemperaturewillcontinuetoclimbuntilthefuelburnsdownsomewhat.Oncethefireisoutandthestovehascooledtoroomtemperature,continuethebreak-inprocedure.Neverattempttoreducethetemperaturebyremovingburninglogsfromthefire.Break-in Odors:Itisnormalforanewlypaintedstovetoemitodorandsmokeduringthefirstfewfires.Thisiscausedbycuringofthehightemperaturepaintandwilldiminishwitheachfire.Openawindowordoortoprovideadditionalventilationtoalleviatethiscondition.

5.8 Adding FuelFollowthisprocedurewhenreloadingthestovewhileitisstillhotandabedofhotembersremains:•Alwaysweargloveswhentendingtothestove.

•AdjustthePrimaryAirShutterLevertothefullyopenpositionandopenthebaffleplate.Waitafewsecondstore-establishstrongdraftbeforeopeningtheloaddoor.Thiswillallowfreshairtoflushthefireboxandpreventsmokeescapingwheneitherthefrontortopdoorisopened.

• OpentheBaffleandTopDoor,Or,OpentheFrontDoor.

DONOTLOADTHROUGHTHETOPWHENTHEFRONTDOORISOPEN.

• Useastovetoolorpokertoevenlydistributecoalsandembersaroundthefirebox.

• Loadthefuel,usuallywithsmallerlogsfirst.

• ClosetheFrontDoor,beingsuretolatchthedoortightly.Or,ClosetheBaffleandthentheTopLoadDoor.

• Wait5–10minutesbeforesettingtheaircontrolsforthedesiredheatoutputandburntime.(Ifyouhaveatleasta2”thickemberbedwhenreloading,itmaybepossibletoclosethedoorandimmediatelyadjusttheaircontrolsetting).

• SettheAirShutteronthedoorforthedesiredheatoutput.

5.9 Open Door Fire-viewingWarning: This stove should be operated with the door either fully open with optional Spark Screen in place or with the door fully closed. Ifthedoorisleftpartlyopen,thereisriskofoverfiring.Also,gasandflamemaybedrawnoutofthefireplacestoveopening,creatingrisksfrombothfireandsmoke.

Beawarethat,whenoperatingwiththedooropen,thereexiststhepossibilityofcarbonmonoxidegenerationbycharcoal,GooddraftisessentialtominimizethepotentialforCOtobeintroducedintothelivingspace.Besureadequatefreshairandventilationareavailabletothestovewhenusingthesparkscreen.

5.7 Starting and Maintaining a FireBurnonlysolidwooddirectlyonthebottomgrateofthestove.Donotelevatethefireinanyway.

WARNING: DO NOT OPERATE THIS STOVE WITH THE ASH DOOR OPEN. DOING SO MAY CAUSE DAMAGE AND WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.

Werecommenduseofamagneticstovetopthermometertomonitorthesurfacetemperatureofthestove.LocatethethermometerdirectlyononeoftherearcornersoftheGriddle/LoadDoor.Theoptimumsurfacetemperaturerangeformostefficientcombustionisbetween400°and700°(204°C-371°C).Chimneydraftshouldbeinthe.05-1.0w.c.range.

1. WiththePrimary Air Shutterinthefullopenposition(totheright),startwithseveralsheetsofcrumplednewspaperplaceddirectlyonthegrate.Ontopofthenewspaper,placeseveralpiecesofsmalldrykindling*(1”-2”indiameterorless)withtwotothreelargerlogs(approx.3”to4”indiameter)ontop.

2. Lightthefireandclosethedoor.Allowthechimneytowarmandestablishastrongdraft.Useyourstovegloveandslowlybuildthefirebyaddinglargerandlargerlogs.Besuretofollowthebreak-inprocedure(Sect.5.6)beforecreatingahotfirethatmightdamagethestove.

3. Oncethestovehasreachedasurfacetemperaturerangeofbetween400°and700°,(204°C-371°C),adjusttheprimaryaircontrolleverasappropriatetogeneratethedesiredheatoutputandburntime.

Withtimeandexperience,youwillsoonbecomeacquaintedwiththeoperatingcharacteristicsofyourparticularinstallation.

Youcanalsomonitorstoveperformancethroughthewindow.Peakcombustionefficiencyoccurswhenexhaustgasisburnedatthebaffleinthetopofthefirebox.Thisisapparentasrollingyellow-orangeflamesappearingatthesecondaryairportsintheundersideofthebaffleplateandforwardtube.Atthisstage,littleornosmokewillbevisibleexitingthechimney.

5.10 Creosote Formation and the Need for RemovalWhenwoodisburnedslowly,itproducestarandothervaporsthatcombinewithmoisturetoformcreosote.Creosotevaporscondenseintherelativelycoolchimneyflue,andcreosoteresidueaccumulatesonthefluelining.Whenignited,thiscreosotefuelsanextremelyhotfire.

Thechimneyconnectorandchimneyflueshouldbeinspectedatleasttwicemonthlyduringtheheatingseasontodetermineifcreosotebuilduphasoccurred.Ifcreosotehasaccumulated,itshouldberemovedtoreducethechanceofachimneyfire.

Intheeventthatcreosoteignitesintheflue,theresultingfireisoftenaccompaniedbyaroaringnoiseandcracklingsoundasflakesofburningcreosotebreakloose.Ifyoususpectyouarehavingachimneyfire,immediatelyclosetheaircontrolsandmakesurethedoorisclosedsecurely.Callthefiredepartmentandhaveeveryoneleavethehouse.

Donotattempttoextinguishthefire.Openingthedoorwillonlysupplyadditionaloxygenandintensifythefire.Whenthefireinthefluehassubsided,resistthetemptationtoopenthedoortocheckonthefire.Thefiremayhavesuffocated,butcouldre-ignitewithasupplyoffreshair.Afterachimneyfire,donotusethestoveuntilthechimneyconnectorandfluehavebeencleanedandinspectedtoensurenodamagehasbeensustained.

SeeSection6.6ofthismanualregardingchimneycleaning.

5.11 Ash RemovalAsheswilldropthroughthebottomgrateintotheinter-nalashpanduringnormaloperation.Emptytheashpanperiodically,dependingonhowfrequentlythestoveisused.Avoidlettingtheashaccumulationtospilloverthepanandintothepanhousing.Alwayswearsafetygloveswhenhandlingtheashes.

Ashes should only be placed in a metal container equipped with a tight sealing lid.Thecontainershouldbeplacedonanoncombustiblefloororontheground,wellawayfromallcombustiblematerials,pendingfinaldisposal.Iftheashesaredisposedofbyburialinsoilorotherwiselocallydispersed,theyshouldbekeptintheclosedcontaineruntilallcindershavethoroughlycooled.

6.4 GasketsCheckdoorandglasspanelgasketsfortightness.Tocheckthesealofthefrontdoor,closeandlatchthedooronadollarbillandslowlytrytopullthebillfree.Youshouldfeelresistanceasyoupull.Ifitcanbeeasilyremoved,thesealistooloose.Adjustthedoorlatchclosuretoimprovetheseal.

6.0 Maintenance

6.1 Glass Care

CleaningOnoccasionitwillbenecessarytocleanthecarbondepositsandflyashoffoftheglass.Ifthesedepositsareallowedtoremainontheglassforanextendedperiodoftime,thesurfacemaybecomeetchedandcloudy.Anycreosotethatmightdevelopontheglasswillburnoffduringthenexthotfire.

Follow this glass cleaning procedure:

1. Glassmustbecompletelycool.2. Onlyuseacleanerthatisspecificallydesignedforthis

purpose.Theuseofabrasiveswilldamagetheglassandultimatelyleavetheglassfrosted.

3. Rinseanddryglasscompletelybeforeburningthestove.Polishwithapieceofnewspaper.

Caution!Alwaysoperatethedoorslowlyandcarefullytoavoidcrackingorbreakingtheglass.Neverusethedoortopushwoodintothefirebox.Iftheglassbecomescrackedorbrokenfollowthereplacementprocedurebelow.

Never operate the stove with a cracked or broken glass panel.

Important:ReplaceglassonlywithceramicglasspanelPN224158specificallydesignedfortheJøtulF50TLDonotusesubstitutes.ReplacementglassisavailablefromyourlocalJøtuldealer.

6.2 General CareAswithyourcar,regularmaintenancewillassuregoodperformanceandprolongthelifeofyourstove.Thefollowingproceduresdonottakelongandaregenerallyinexpensive.Whendoneconsistently,theywillincreasethelifeofyourstoveandinturn,provideyearsofenjoyment.

• Regularlyemptythestoveofallsootandashes.Onlyuseavacuumforthisjobifthevacuumisspecificallydesignedtohandleashes.CAUTION: Ashes can contain live embers. Be certain the ash bed contains no live embers before using a vacuum.

• Inspectthestove:Usingastronglightinspectthestoveinsideandoutforcracksorleaks.Replaceanybrokenbricks.

T h i s w a r r a n t y p o l i c y a p p l i e s t o w o o d - b u r n i n g p r o d u c t sidentified by Jøtul and Scan trade names, as set forth below.A. Cast Iron, Enamel, and Steel Components:JøtulNorthAmericaInc.(JØTUL)warrants,totheoriginalretailpurchaser,that those components of the Jøtul or Scan Stove or Fireplace specifiedabove will be free of defects in material and workmanship for a periodof five (5) years from the date of purchase. This warranty is subject tothe terms, exclusions and limitations set forth in the following text.B. Over-firingcanalsobeidentifiedbywarpedplates,rust-coloredcastiron,paintpigmentthathasturneddustywhite,orbubbling,crackinganddiscolorationoftheenamelfinish.Misuseincludes,withoutlimitation,usethatisnotinconformancewiththeoperatinginstructionscontainedinthisowner’smanual.

4. Damageduetoserviceperformedbyaninstallerorserviceagency,unlessotherwiseagreedtoinwritingbyJØTUL.

5. Damagecausedbyunauthorizedmodification,useorrepair.6. Costsincurredbytraveltimeand/orlossofservice.7. Labororothercostsassociatedwiththerepairofcomponentsbeyond
