Josiah Reads God’s WordsBible Story2 Chronicles 34:1—35:19

Teacher ChallengeKing Josiah did not yet know about the law of God, but he turned his attention to seek the God of his ancestor David. He removed Baal worship, destroyed the Asherah poles and crushed the idols to powder. He set about repairing the Temple. During the work, the Book of the Law that God gave to Moses was found. He called the people together to hear God’s law and to promise with their king that they would obey what they had heard.

➥ When was a time you discovered a command in God’s Word you had not been following?

➥ What in your life do you need to do now so that you can be more dedicated to God?

When you desire to please God and spend time in His presence, He will work in your heart and in your life. Ask Him to show you what things in your life are keeping you from a closer relationship to Him. Let Him help you replace those hindrances with things that please Him. Continue to let the children in your class know how important it is to hear and obey God’s Word. It tells us about God and how to experience His love every day.

Teacher’s Planning1. Choose which centers you

will provide and the order in which children will participate in them. For tips on schedule planning, see page 9.

2. Plan who will lead each center, making sure to have one adult for approximately every six children. For staffing tips and ideas, see page 12.

Play to LearnActive Game Center: Scroll Run

CollectBible, sheet of construction paper, string, masking tape, hula hoop.

PrepareRoll construction paper into scroll and tie with string. Use masking tape to make a small square on the floor on one side of the playing area. Make a masking-tape line on opposite side of playing area. (Note: Remove masking tape immediately after activity.)

Do1. Place scroll in masking-tape square and hula hoop behind masking-tape line. Children line up in

pairs behind line. First pair steps into the hula hoop and walks to scroll while holding on to the hula hoop. Pair picks up scroll and returns to group.

2. First pair steps out of the hula hoop and hands both the hula hoop and the scroll to the second pair, who steps into hula hoop and returns scroll to square. Continue in this fashion until all pairs have had a turn. Repeat as time and interest allow.

Talk About➥ In our Bible story today, people helped clean the Temple. One helper found a scroll. (A

scroll is like a long rolled-up sheet of paper with writing on it.) He ran to take the scroll to the king. Let’s play a game where we work together to deliver a scroll.

➥ The Bible says, “Teach me, O Lord.” “Lord” is another name for God. One of the things God teaches us is to love each other. We can show love by walking carefully in the hula hoop so our partner doesn’t fall.

➥ Emma, who is a person you love? What are some things you can do to show your mom that you love her? (Obey what she says. Give her hugs. Say kind words to her. Help her.)

➥ Pray briefly, Dear God, help us learn to love others.

For Younger ChildrenPairs simply hold hands as they walk across the playing area to pick up or return the scroll.

For Older ChildrenAs children become familiar with working with their partner to walk across the playing area in the hula hoop, instruct them walk faster each time until they are jogging. Watch that pairs work together so no child is pulled along by his or her partner.

Play to LearnArt Center: Scroll Script

CollectBible, shelf paper, scissors, measuring stick, mark-ers, craft sticks, tape, rubber bands.

PrepareCut one 4x18-inch (10x45.5-cm) length of shelf paper for each child.

Do1. Using markers, each child decorates a length of paper.

2. When scrolls are decorated, give two craft sticks to each child. Children tape a craft stick to each end of their scrolls. Rolling from each end, children roll up their scrolls. Children slip rubber bands over scrolls to keep them from unrolling.

Talk About➥In today’s Bible story, King Josiah read God’s

Word to all the people. In Bible times, God’s Word was written on a scroll, which is like a long rolled-up sheet of paper. Let’s make some scrolls of our own.

➥King Josiah read God’s Word aloud so that the people would learn from it. We learn from read-ing God’s Word, the Bible. Sherilyn, who reads God’s Word to you?

➥The Bible says, “Teach me, O Lord.” “Lord” is another name for God. One thing God teaches us is to love others. Matthew, I saw you hand Kerry a marker. It was kind of you to help her. You know how to show love to others!

For Younger ChildrenInstead of shelf paper, children decorate sheets of white paper. When finished, assist children in rolling up papers. Tie closed with a length of yarn or ribbon.

For Older ChildrenOn a large sheet of paper, print “Teach me, O Lord.” Children copy the words of the verse on their scrolls.

Play to LearnBlock Center: Bowling Blocks

CollectBible, masking tape, blocks, ball.

PreparePlace two lengths of masking tape parallel to each other several feet apart. (Note: Remove masking tape immediately after activity.)

Do1. Children place blocks on two masking-tape lines to make a bowling alley.

2. Children stand a row of blocks on their ends as bowling pins at one end of the bowling alley. Children take turns rolling ball down alley to see how many “pins” they can knock down.

3. Volunteers stand behind “pins” to put them back in place after each child’s turn.

Talk About➥ The Bible says, “Teach me, O Lord.” “Lord”

is another name for God. God gave us His Word, the Bible, so that we can learn what God wants us to do. One thing God wants us to do is love others. We can show love to our friends when we play games. Let’s pretend we’re at a bowling alley!

➥ Vicki, you are doing a good job helping by picking up the fallen blocks. What are some ways you help your friends at school? (Share toys. Help friend who has fallen.)

➥ Neal, what are some ways you can help at home? (Set the table. Feed the dogs.)

For Younger ChildrenMake a number of bowling alleys so children do not have to wait long for a turn. Make each alley just a couple of feet long.

For Older ChildrenShow children how to set up 10 blocks in the proper bowling pin formation. Children record number of blocks each child knocks down.

Play to LearnScience Center: Sand Search

CollectBible, 4x12-inch (10x30.5-cm) white paper, mark-er, rubber band, shallow cardboard box, sand, 1- to 2-inch (2.5- to 5-cm) paintbrushes; optional—coins, crayons, small blocks, etc.

PreparePrint Bible verse on a sheet of white paper, roll up tightly and secure with rubber band. (Optional: Prepare a scroll according to Art Center directions.) Fill box with a layer of sand deep enough to hide scroll you prepared. Hide scroll. (Note: If you have a large class, prepare more than one setup or take children outside to a playground sandbox and hide more than one scroll.)

Do1. Children use brushes to brush sand and find hidden scroll. Assist child who finds scroll in opening

and reading scroll.

2. Repeat as time and interest allow. (Optional: Hide coins, crayons, small blocks and other items for children to find.)

Talk About➥ In today’s Bible story, the men cleaning the Temple

found a scroll. Let’s search for a scroll the way scien-tists search for things from long ago.

➥ Scientists use brushes to find things buried in sand. Using brushes helps the scientists not to break the objects they are looking for.

➥ The Bible says, “Teach me, O Lord.” “Lord” is another name for God. God teaches us when we read His Word, the Bible. In Bible times, God’s Word was written on scrolls like this one. Pray briefly, Dear God, help me to learn from Your Word, the Bible.

For Younger ChildrenInstead of using paintbrushes, younger children simply reach into sand and search by hand.

For Older ChildrenPrint “Teach me, O Lord” on paper scraps, one word on each scrap. Children hide paper scraps in the sand, use paintbrushes to find papers and then put them in correct verse order.

Listen to Learn2 Chronicles 34:1—35:19

CollectBible, Bible Story 19 pictures from God’s Story for Me Poster Pack #1, Preschool Music #1 CD and player, ball.

Greet Each OtherChildren stand or sit in a circle. Are you wearing something green today? Clap your hands if you are. Repeat with other questions and motions. Are you a boy? Put your hands on your head. Do you have brown hair? Reach for the sky! Be sure every child has an opportunity to respond.

Tell the StoryOpen your Bible to 2 Chronicles 34. Tell the story using the pictured motions (keywords in bold) or show Bible Story 19 pictures.

How do you help clean up here in our room? Listen to hear what some people found when they cleaned God’s Temple.

For many years, the book of God’s Words had been lost. God’s Temple was broken down and dirty. But young King Josiah loved God. One day he said, “It is time to clean the Temple. We need many helpers to make the Temple clean and beautiful.”

Many people came to help. Some helpers swept and scrubbed the Temple. Swish, swish went their brooms. Some helpers fixed broken furniture. Bang, bang went their hammers. While the helpers worked hard, the Temple leader picked up some-thing covered with dust. What is this? he wondered. Poof! He blew off the dust. “It’s a scroll,” he said. (A scroll is like a long rolled-up sheet of paper with writing on it.) Carefully he unrolled the scroll. He read a few words. Then he told the king’s helper, “Here is a scroll with God’s words written on it! King Josiah will want to see this!”

The helper ran to the king’s house. “Look at this, King Josiah,” he said. “The Temple leader found this scroll! It has God’s words written on it.”

King Josiah listened to one of his helpers read God’s words. King Josiah loved God and wanted to obey God’s words. He invited all of God’s people to come to the Temple. Boys and girls, mothers and fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers came to hear God’s words. King Josiah unrolled the Bible scroll and read God’s words. The people listened.

King Josiah and the people promised to obey God’s words. As long as King Josiah lived, he and the people obeyed God.

Lesson 50

Talk About the StoryWhat did King Josiah do with God’s words? (Read them to all the people. Helped the people know how to obey God’s words.) We can obey God’s words, too. God’s Word teaches us to love others. Jenny, what can you do to love others in our class? When you are a good listener, you are showing love. Who can you show love to at home? How can you help your dad?

Sing to GodLet’s sing a song about some of the ways we can show God’s love to others. Lead children in singing “Love Is” (track 13 on CD). God’s Word, the Bible, teaches us to love others. Who are some of the people you can show God’s love to?

Hear and Say God’s WordHolding your Bible open to Psalm 119:33, say verse aloud. “Lord” is another name for God. When we read the Bible, we are learning what God wants us to do. Lead children in repeating the verse several times. As the children are repeating the verse with you, point to one child. Children say that child’s name instead of the word “me.” Repeat until every child’s name has been used.

Pray to GodWe can ask God to teach us to show love to others. Invite volunteers to say this brief prayer individually or as a group: Dear God, please help me learn to show love to others.

Praise to GodChildren sit in a circle. Let’s think of friends we can help. Roll ball to a child. Child holds ball and names a friend. Child rolls ball across circle to another child who names a friend he or she can help. Continue until all children have named a friend. Now let’s think of people in our families we can help. Children name family members when they receive the ball. For a greater challenge, children name family members and the way they will help them. God wants us to show love to each other. I’m glad we can help our family and friends.

Option: If you take an offering during this time,

explain to children that giving money is one way

to show God’s love to others. Briefly describe one

mission project your church uses offering money

to support.
