Joseph Hindley was born on 10th March 1806 in Antrobus, and baptised (son of George

Hindley) at Great Budworth Church on 30th March 1806. BGBGBBBBBGG

He was the fifth of eleven children of George and Sarah Hindley. Joseph learnt from his

father’s trade and became a shoemaker.

On 25th January 1827 Joseph married Sarah Knight at Grappenhall Church and they began a

large family of 14 children. 1826 was the year that his father, George, moved to Barnton

and so it is likely that Joseph and Sarah became the occupants of the Antrobus family home.

We are grateful for Joseph’s foresight in making a written record of the birth dates of him,

Sarah and their 14 children, albeit it would seem in 1878.

By the time Joseph was 45 (in 1851) he was a Master Cordwainer (worker of leather) and he

was living at Reed House Cottage, Antrobus (possibly the original family home). He must

have had a thriving business as he employed two apprentices and a two journeymen.

Joseph spent his life as a shoemaker in Antrobus and he continued to live in Antrobus during

his retirement.

His wife, Sarah, died in 1890 and Joseph died in 1892, in his 86th year. Their grave is with

Joseph’s father George, in Great Budworth Churchyard. For details see George Hindley (1775-1849)

The picture on the right is likely to be of

Sarah Knight and Joseph Hindley. It was

found amongst papers connected with Sarah

Knight. Unfortunately there were no names

on the photograph. Another clue is that the

features of the man in the photo are very

similar to pictures of Jonas Hindley, his son.

Sarah Knight inherited a bible from her father

(now with Dave Jowitt) that lists some of her

family members.

“The New Testament” of our Lord and

Saviour Jesus Christ, translated from the

original Greek, was published in 1793. It was

printed by Mark and Charles Kerr, Edinburgh,

His Majesty’s Printers.

Entries in the Bible include:

Sarah Knights book 1822.

1805 William Knight was born on 30th Sept.

Sarah Knight was born June 7th 1809

At 6 o’Clock At Night.

1820 John Knight died February 7th aged 43 About a yard of the (house?)

1823 Mary Knight died February 2nd aged 34.
