Joseph Cheung, P.Eng. Greetings to all ASPE BC Chapter members and non-members. I hope all of us are practising the government health guidelines during this 2nd wave of the pandemic as British Columbia undergoes restriction orders on social gatherings. For this reason, our pre- liminary schedule for the ASPE BC Chapter Christmas in-person Decem- ber meeting will be cancelled as per the unanimous votes by our Board of Directors during our November Board meeting. Also, we will not be holding our technical meeting in December since ASPE will be hosting 2020 ASPE Digital Experience, which will have both online technical seminar for continual education and digital trade show experience. The registration is free for all ASPE members and all members are encouraged to participate in this online event. November 14 marked ASPE BC Chapter 45th Anniversary as the Chapter was charted on November 14, 1975. As Chapter President, I have re- submitted Everett Crowdis Life Mem- bership Nomination since the Life Membership Bylaw was amended to any retired person who has been a Member in good standing for a mini- mum of 25 accumulated years. Ever- ett definitely meets this criteria since he has been an ASPE member since 1973 (47 years membership) even be- fore the Charter of this BC Chapter in 1975. Everett’s nomination for the Life Membership would be the first for the Chapter. Drainage Requirements for Elevator Pits

By Joseph Cheung, P.Eng.

Elevator pits drainage questions and answers on the ASPE Connect Open Forum brought back memory of my first design of a drainage system for a hydraulic elevator proposed for a low-rise building many years ago. I learnt about an ele-vator pit which could possibly be filled with hydraulic fluid if there is a leak in the hydraulic system or water from an acti-vation of a sprinkler head inside the elevator shaft. After consulting with a senior plumbing designer, review the code requirements and research for the design details, it included a drain in the elevator pit, and an oil interceptor and a sump with a sump pump located outside the elevator pit. The ar-chitect reviewed the proposed drainage requirements for the hydraulic elevator and decided to change the elevator to an electric elevator and a non-combustible elevator shaft and elevator.

The elevator design demands coordination with various pro-fessional disciplines and the responsibilities are outlined in the matrix of a recently updated Professional Practice Guide-lines for the Design and Installation of Elevating Devices published by the Engineers and Geoscience of British Co-lumbia (EGBC) on September, 2020 (EGBC, 2020). The coordination required for the plumbing designer include:

• Provide drains in the firefighter elevator pit.

• Avoid running pipes above elevator machines in the elevator machine room and in the hoist way (B44 – 2.8.3.4).

Elevator designs in British Columbia and many other Juris-dictions in North America generally adopt ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators as the referenced standard for their safety codes. The CSA B44 describes the requirements for both electric and hydraulic elevators and their specialized elevator applications. The elevator pit is required to be constructed of noncombustible floors and to prevent any entry of ground water into the pit (CSA B44 - 2.1.2.2). Permanent provisions shall be designed to prevent accumulation of ground water in the pit (CSA B44 - 2.2.2.3) which would result with a drain in the pit. If this drain is below the lowest invert of the building drain, a sump pump would be required. The design of these drains/sump pump would be required to meet the applicable plumbing code and provide positive means to prevent water, gases and

odor from entering the hoistway (CSA B44 2.2.2.4).

Since the elevator pit should be designed to prevent water accumulated in the elevator pit, what would be the require-ment for the size of the floor drain and the drainage flow rate? The common approach is to size the drain to the flow of a sprinkler head. However, as per NFPA 13 sprinklers are not required at the top and the bottom of the elevator hoist-way if the elevator shaft is of non-combustible or limited combustible construction and the car enclosure materials meet the requirements of CSA B44 (NFPA 9.3.6.6) and the elevator mechanism does not contain combustible hydraulic fluids (NFPA 9.3.6.2), respectively. It thereby concludes that pit drains are not required in the elevator pit if the elevator shaft and the car enclosure are of non-combustible or limited combustible construction as per CSA B44. If the elevator shaft or the elevator enclosure is of combustible construc-tion, sprinklers are required at the top and at the bottom of the shaft as per NFPA 13. Thus, elevator drains/sump pumps would be required. Also, oil interceptor would be required if the elevator operates with hydraulic fluids.

Fire fighter elevators are designated elevators as required by the Building Code typically for high-rise buildings. The ele-vator safety code CSA B44 has specific requirement for ele-vators provided with Emergency Operation in that elevator pits drains/sump pumps shall be provided with a capacity to remove a minimum of 11.4m3/hr (50 gallons per minute) of water (B44 2.2.25). This would have significant impact on the sizing of the elevator pit drain. As well, if the drain is below the invert of the building drain, a 50 gpm sump pump with sufficient pumping head would be required to remove the potential water accumulated in the fire fighter elevator pit.

In conclusion, elevator pit drains would not be required in elevator shafts of noncombustible construction. The com-bustible constructed elevator shafts are required to be de-signed with elevator pit drains/sump pumps, which would have a capacity based on the sprinklers located at the top and the bottom of the shaft as per NFPA 13. The elevator shaft designated for the Fire fighter elevator typically required for high-rise buildings shall be designed with elevator pit drains/sump pump with drainage capacity of 50 gpm as per CSA B44 2.2.2.5.
