Lots of thanks...

I give thanks today for the School program that just sent 12 students on their way tothe "wild high school days" and moved the rest of the students into the next gradelevels. The whole faculty deserves a great big thank you for all of their efforts. Some of the faculty has had some of the children for all of their years at O'Toole. So make sure you say thank you to Pat Hofkamp, Marysol Gomez, Yvonne Lenhardt,Natalie Kistner, Debbie Butler, Diane McKillip, Mary Bruni, Anne Melone, PattyCLough, Sally Hennessey, Marijean Rex, Charlotte Skocz, Pat Fointno, Barb Hanifin,Kathy Daniels, Barb Rook, Chrissy Milazzo, Jane Pagan, and, all of the extended dayand special class teachers (Spanish and Gym) for all of their efforts this year to helpour students grow into good, moral, and educated citizens. Eighth grade may beout, but hold on for one more week. Kudos to one and all!

And while I am on the subject of giving thanks, I don't remember whether or not Igave a thank you shout out to the RE department for another good year under JanePagan's guidance. Jane's leadership has been steady for some years now. Let'skeep on churning out the best Catholics - those who love the Church because JesusChrist gave it to us to love as the Father loves - the same way He loves each of us.

I also want to give thanks to all who have sent me cards when I celebrated my 13^^anniversary. The bulletin article printed in the May bulletin took many peopleby surprise. I received much support from this flock and you must know that 1ameternally grateful for that. I cannot apologize for my feelings, nor can I makeexcuses for the way others see me. However, just trust me when I say that 1amgoing to take my growth as your pastor one step at a time. Thanks again, everyone, for your continued love.

I do hope that everyone has made their appointment to have their pictures taken forthe parish pictorial directory. TyArseneau and his team are really putting a lot ofeffort into making this project super successful. I know how important it is to becalled by name. I know how hard it is to remember people's names when I haveseen them over and over again on Sundays at Mass. Be a part of making ourcommunity EVEN MORE welcoming and friendly than it alreadyhas been for a long time!

Thanks again, everyone! Hope you don't melt overthe summer!

Ca My dad could whistle soloudly you could hear Its

piercing sound three blocks away. When we heardhis signature tune, we'd come running home. Thatwas just one way my dad was a good shepherd tous. He also guided us to Ignore the calls of those

who would lead us into bad behaviors and instead

to listen to God's call to live a life worthy of beingcalled Christian.

You can help your children become attuned to God's call by familiarizing

them with stories from the Gospel; worshiping with the community onSundays; and praying regularly at meals, bedtime, and In good times andbad. O'TOOLE SCHOOL NEWS!!

So much is happening these last few weeksof school. The third, fourth, and fifthgraders were visited by a special petnamed Dusty and two ladies from

P.A.W.S. in Tinley Park. The students learned all about the shelter and the rescue animalsthat live there. After the visit, the students made thank you cardsand talked about how they take care of their own pets. Many of thestudents are considering asking their parents to adopt a pet or helpout at the shelter.

As is the tradition for our first grade class, baby chicks hatched lastweek and are now on their way to the farm. The fist gradersstudied the life cycle of the chicks and waited patiently for twenty•one days, watching and turning the eggs in the incubator. The

chicks spent a week in the brooder box in the classroom with the students taking care ofthem. The students learned about God's precious gift of life and how we must beresponsible and care for all life. The eighth graders spent a day at Great America, so exciting! All of our eighth graders are prepared for high school, thanks to our wonderful teachers, caring parents and of course, all the hard work and effort they have displayed overthe years at St. Lawrence O'Toole School. Everyone was accepted at the high school of their choice. We are so proudof the graduates.

ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Go and Make DisciplesFather of life, your Son returns.Co-creator and intimate partner,he ascends to sit at your right hand.He has conquered sin and death, his hands marked by the wounds of

his love.

As the Lord passes from our sight,we practice lifting our hearts, that we might rise with him one day.Now he calls us, as he did the

first Apostles,to go and make disciples throughout

the world.

May we know you are with us always.May we follow without fear.May your Kingdom come.We ask this through our Lord

Jesus Christ,

your Son, who lives and reignswith you

in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen.

Sunday, June 1, 2014Announce the Good News

Today's Readings: Acts 1:1-11; Psalm 47:2-3, 6-7, 8-9 (6);Ephesians 1:17-23; Matthew 28:16-20. While the RisenOne departs from the company of the disciples, he is abandoning neither them nor the Church. Today the ChurchsingsPsalm 47 withgladness: "Sing praises to God, sing praises."The Gospel issues a missionary command: "Go thereforeand make disciples of all nations." This is what Jesusintended for the Church: an outward direction. Reflect on

the new dismissals found in the third edition of the Roman

Missal—words of Benedict XVI, "Go and announce the

Gospel of theLord," or "Go in peace, glorifying the Lord byyour life." We are called to do this by virtue of our Baptism.

Christ has shared in our human, fragile nature, and hewill call us to be with him, at the right hand of the Father inglory. The Ascension of Christ links us to our longing to be

united with him in his reign forever, and to the joy of experiencing him still with us until the end of time. Christ is thehead, and we are the Body, but our hearts ascend with him,

so there is no division between head and body, because we,the Body of Christ, cannot be separated from Jesus, thehead. After the Ascension, the Apostles learned to experience his presence in a different way—a way that allChristians after them have worked to learn also.

Take lime ihis week to reflect on the Apostle's Creed, which captures the essence of this solemnity in the words,"He ascended to heaven, and is seated at the right hand ofGod the Father almighty." Gathered together in the BlessedTrinity, may the Church continue to proclaim with one voice,"Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia!"

THIS WEEK AT HOME

Monday, June 2Saints Marcellinus and PeterThese two early martyrs are included among the saints in theRoman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I). The Church has alwaysesteemed its Apostles and martyrs who witnessed to the faithwith their blood. In this Easter Time, we have heard the sto

Tuesday, June 3Saint Charles Lwanga and CompanionsCharles Lwanga is the patron of victims of torture; he wasmartyred in Uganda in 1886 for refusing to renounceChristianity in a country led by a corrupt ruler. In the firstreading, as Paul travels to Jerusalem, he knows that imprisonment and hardships may await him. Holy martyrs of theChurch, hear our prayer! Wednesday, June 4Honor Your EldersPaul's speech in today's first reading admonishes the community to care for its elders who "keep watch" and "shepherdthe church of God." All of us are called to care for our elders.

We can learn from cultural groups who have a great tradition of revering their older members. What will you do tocare for and honor the elders in your life? Today's Readings:Acts 20:28-38; Psalm 68:29-30, 33-35a, 35bc-36ab (33a);

Saturday, June 7Come, Holy Spirit! As we conclude Easter Time, our focus is now on the comingof the Holy Spirit at Pentecost, and the Spirit's role in theChurch. The Eucharist sustains the Church for its missionaryactivity. Like the disciples, we are called to come out frombehind closed doors and forgive, reconcile, and welcome in afragile and broken world. How will you allow the Holy Spiritto shape you into a vessel of peace, hope, and reconciliation?Come, Holy Spirit! Today's Readings: Acts 28:16-20, 30-31;Psalm 11:4, 5 and 7 (7b); John 21:20-25.
