Objectives : the over all the objectives of this program are to provide enrolled students with:

A. Advanced and in-depth knowledge forensic medicine , toxicology and related basic medical sciences so that the graduates will have strong back ground and knowledge necessary for their career in forensic medicine and

B. Advanced methods and techniques in forensic medicine and toxicology biomedical research to enhance their capabilities of conducting advanced research in this

a- The applicant must fulfill the general university requirements for admission issued by the faculty of postgraduate studies.

b- The applicant should hold a BSc or equivalent from accredited university in The following majors :

- Medicine.- Dentistry.- Pharmacy.- Allied health sciences.- Nursing.- Biology and molecular genetics- Chemistry

c- There will be an interview for evaluation of expectations and interests of the applicants as well as to determine which remedy courses should the applicant take in order to provide the student with necessary back ground for advanced courses.

d- Successful completion of TOEFL or other English proficiency exams required by set by faculty of graduate studies .

3- Requirements for awarding MSc.Enrolled students will be awarded the degree master of science (M. Sc) in forensic medicine following successful completion of 34 credit hours as outlined previously and fulfilling the following requirements

a- Student must pass all mandatory and elective courses.b- Student should maintain a minimal cumulative average c- of 75%..d- Student must present an original dissertation in one of the Physiology

branches.( for thesis track )e- Student should defend his / her dissertation successfully.f- The student should pass the comprehensive exam (M 798) at the end of the

program (For comprehensive track )

Course Description:

(M 721) Advanced Biochemistry (3cr): Fundamentals of biochemistry including structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates; metabolism and regulation of metabolism; quantitative treatments of chemical equilibrium, enzyme catalysis and bioenergetics; the chemical basis of genetic information flow.

(M 740) Experimental design and Biostatistics (2cr): This course introduces statistical methods commonly used by biologists from the viewpoint of application. Methods include student t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA), correlation and regression analysis, nonparametric analysis and an introduction of multivariate analysis. The course will focus on the basic understanding of the statistical concepts, use of computer software (Statistical Analysis System, SAS) to do the analysis, and the interpretation of statistical results.

(M 762) Instrumentation and Research Methods (3cr): This course introduces with theory and practice of modern methods used in the study of effects of chemicals and toxins from the molecular level to whole animals. Techniques covered include: physical and biochemical methods for study and determination of chemicals and toxicants, namely, HPLC, GC/MS, spectrophotometery, fluorometry, electrophoresis, chromatography, and other laboratory methods . The objective of this course is to introduce the theories, principles, and methods of conducting qualitative and quantitative research in Toxicology and forensic sciences. Additionally, Research methods covered in this course will include literature review, formulation of research questions, statement of hypotheses, selection of subjects, research design, data collection, and data analysis. Students will generate and develop their own research interests and produce an original proposal for research in their field of specialization.

(M 765) Cellular and Molecular Toxicology (3cr.): This course examines the cellular mechanisms that mediate xenobiotic toxicity at the cellular, biochemical and molecular level. The course emphasizes the mechanisms through which toxic chemicals act to evoke cell injury and cell death and the mechanisms through which toxic chemicals interact to evoke toxicological manifestations. Students will have the opportunity to examine the application of the scientific method to the study of the fundamentals of cellular structure and function, as well as to investigate the molecular transmission of information from generation to generation and the integration of cells into whole functioning organisms.

(M 769) Ethics in Research (1cr): an examination of integrity and misconduct in life sciences research, including issues of data collection, publication, authorship, and peer review.

(M 770) Laboratory in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (3cr): Basic recombinant DNA techniques: methods for growing, isolating, and purifying recombinant DNA and cloning vectors, DNA sequencing and sequence analysis, Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Methods and technologies utilized for sample electrophoresis and interpretation of STR data obtained from the analysis of nuclear DNA and sequence data obtained from mitochondrial DNA are emphasized. Exercises may include: DNA and RNA amplification, isolation and analysis; molecular genotyping and DNA sequence analysis; DNA cloning; chromatography; electrophoresis and spectroscopy.

(M 780) Introduction to Toxicology (3cr): This course will teach basic concepts in toxicology such as definitions, area and scope of toxicology, toxicant interaction, mechanisms of cell injury, carcinogenesis, oxidative stress, toxicological responses to biochemical, functional, and morphological changes. In addition, this course provides a comprehensive overview of the basic principles of toxicology and the practical aspects of forensic toxicology. Students will learn to define the toxic agents most commonly resulting in legal problems in our society.

(M 781) Principles of Forensic Medicine and Foorensic Science(2cr): The course covers and Deals with medico-legal investigation of death and injury due to natural causes, accidents, and violence. Covers analysis/investigation of transportation injuries, of homicides/suicides due to various causes, rape, or injury; methods for identification and guidelines for quality control assurance. Forensic terminology, anatomy, and physiology of the human body with emphasis on the understanding of the underlying pathology of traumatic and sudden, unexpected deaths encountered in forensics. Bone growth and repair as it relates to child abuse, structure and function of the heart relating to sudden deaths, and anatomic areas of the brain prone to hemorrhagic lesions following trauma. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and Differentiation between deaths from asphyxia.

(M 782) Medico-legal lows (2cr):  The course concentrates on principles and concepts of legal and ethical aspects in medical science, and introduces participants to the basic approach to law and legal process to contemporary issues in medical care including malpractice, hospital privileges, confidentiality, natural death, abortion, consent/authorization for treatment, human experimentation, and peer review.  Common misconceptions about malpractice law and the rights of physicians and the rights of physicians and patients as well as the legal mechanisms for resolving disputes are examined including the role of expert witnesses.

(M 783) Special Topics in Toxicology and Forensic Medicine (2cr): This course will involve a series of lectures and discussions on new advances in Toxicology and Forensic Science. Special Topics in Forensic Science Course covers material on new and varies areas of development which are not routinely presented in existing courses. Student research papers are required

(M 784) Toxicology and Forensic Science SEMINAR (1cr): Seminar series to introduce recent advances, methodology and terminology in toxicology and Forensic Science. In addition student will conducted presentations, to report their progress during their degree research.

(M 785) Poisonous Plants(2cr): The student by the end of this course will be able to identify the major poisonous plants locally, their uses and benefits, to understand their toxic mechanisms and diagnoses and programs of management of diseases caused to humans and animals. Also to educate animals owners about types of these plants and methods of prevention and safety.

(M 786) Pathology (3 cr): The goal of this course is to provide the student with the opportunity to develop a sound knowledge of the etiology, pathogenesis, morphologic changes, and functional consequences of pathologic processes. This course introduces the fundamental concepts underlying the basic manifestations of disease at the cellular and tissue level. Specific topics covered include: cellular pathology, inflammation, vascular disturbances, neoplasia and immunopathology. These areas provide the prerequisite information necessary for detailed study of disease processes affecting organs and organ systems. The course material is presented by means of formal lectures, microscopic slides (laboratory) and gross specimens.

(M 787) Chemical Toxicology (3cr). This course in chemical toxicology dealing with both chemical hazards and exposure. Overview of empirical data relating to the toxicity of various classes of chemicals for test organisms, followed by study of toxicity at the cellular level, including studies of interactions between toxic substances and enzymatic systems. Initial events in enzyme induction and mutagenesis. Study of predictive capabilities in the areas of structure-activity relationships and mechanisms of enzyme induction, followed by assessment of mechanisms of exposure to toxic chemicals.

(M 788) Advanced Cellular and Molecular Biology (3cr): Lectures in Fundamentals of modern cell biology. Including structure and function of biological membranes, membrane transport, cellular organelles, protein transport and processing, nuclear structure, the cytoskeleton, signal transduction, cell death and mechanisms of cellular transformation. Additionally the course will cover the

molecular genetic basis of normal and aberrant cell growth, cytoskeleton, extracellular matrix, lipids, signal transduction, oncogenes, and growth factors

(M 789) Family violence(3cr): The students will cover the history of family abuse, types of abuse and the terminology used. To know the rules govern the violence and the rights of all individuals including those in custody. Also to be able to identify the risk factors and thd strategies to deal with them since WHO has classified violence as a category of disease affecting the society at large.

(M 791) Projects (3cr). An examination of the development and present state of knowledge in selected research areas of toxicology. Research project involves experimental design, data collection and analysis, written report and oral presentation. Students will be required to attend seminars and tutorials on topics related to research. Limited enrolment.

(M 798) Comprehensive exam (0 hours).

(M 799) MASTER'S THESIS (9cr). The student will choose an adviser after completing one semester in the graduate program. The student and the adviser will select a "master's level" research project. By the end of the first calendar year in the program, the student will submit a proposal to a selected research committee on the topic of his/her research to be conducted during the second year. The student must complete the research project and submit a manuscript reporting the data to his/her research committee.

(PH. 720) Environmental Health (3cr): Upon completion, student should be able to understand the effects of environmental agent on human health, to appreciate the short-term and the proximal long-term effects. Also to know the mechanism of toxicity and the tests for diagnosis. Finally the student should be familiar with the regulation relevant and prevention and general safety as well as regulations of compensation.

(DENT 789) Forensic Dentistry (1cr): Student needs to know the importance of several branches of dentistry in the field of forensic medicine e.g. identification especially in unknown & decomposed bodies since teeth are known to resist extremes of temperature for long time even after burial. Also to familiarize the students in the importance of teeth and jaws in estimation of age.Nowadays other significance of dentistry is relevance in bites e.g. differentiate human from animal bites & the manner i.e. circumstance of its occurrence.

(PHAR 731) Advanced Natural Products Chemistry Skills (3Cr.):New natural products as well as new topics in natural products will be studied in this course. Topics like microbiological conversion og chemical compounds, fungus, algae and microorganism secondary metabolites, marine natural compounds, activity guided isolation and fractionation will be of certain emphasis.

(PHAR 743) Hospital pharmacy and Communication Skills (3Cr.):This course covers a detailed discussion of the practice of hospital pharmacy including the different duties of the hospital pharmacists, namely: organization of the hospital and hospital pharmacy, purchase and inventory control, the pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, the Hospital Formulary, unit dose system, preparation of intravenous admixture services, patient education and counseling. Skill communication with medical staff and patients will also be covered.

(PHAR 745) Clinical Toxicology Cases (2Cr.) Selected cases involving intoxication with drugs, chemicals, insectides, pesticides, animal and plant toxins will be discussed. The course also includes presentations by students of various interesting case reports in clinical toxicology cited in medical journals. Emphasis will be given to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of intoxication

(NUR 745) Forensic nursing (3cr). This course presents an overview of the development of forensic nursing as a specialty formally recognized by the American Nurses Association. Forensic nursing, simply defined, explores where nursing practice has a high likelihood of overlapping with the legal system (i.e., child and family abuse, sexual assault, and death investigation). Students will be introduced to a variety of forensic nursing roles as well as how forensic nurses work collaboratively with many disciplines within the justice systems. Principles of thorough evidence collection and preservation will be highlighted. Students will be introduced to expanding career opportunities in this rapidly growing nursing sub-specialty.

(NUR 747) Psychology Assessment & Counseling in Forensic Science (3cr): The student should acquaint himself with different medico-legal cases affecting the mental health and the proper ways of dealing with such cases, counseling and the liabilities in regard to courts of law especial the diminished responsibility, consent dangerousness and compensation.
