Mixed-Use Low Rise

The Oasis is a mixed use building in Kansas City, MO. The project included a bottom fl oor for retail and commercial and two upper fl oors for residential and related services. This structure is intended to act as a potential base for a second phase highrise addition.

Located in the heart of Downtown Kansas City, one of the challenges addressed in the project was the disparity of public spaces, restaurants, and retail stores, in contrast to an abundance of Offi ce buildings. The goal of this project is to provide attractive spaces for mercatile businesses to inhabit and for the community to utilize, thus acting as a catalyst that ignites further development of downtown.

Mixed-Use Low Rise

The intention behind this design is to offer an inviting and open courtyard, while providing a visually sturdy base for a phase two high rise addition. As well also providing green space for both the inhabitants and the public.

The facade is pushed out from the structural grid and supported on cantilevers in order to achieve the stepping of the exterior shell.

Glazing systems are placed at the top of each exterior wall and turn back to meet the next level, offering more daylighting, and upward views of surrounding Highrises.

Monastery

Students were challenged to design a monastery in Warr Acres, OK. The project included an offi ce/classroom building, a main sanctuary, dormitories, and living center.

The project focused on site design, how to work with and manipulate a site. Including parking design, building location, contouring, and landscaping.

The primary challenge of the site, was how to address the overgrown creekbed that divided the two sides of the given area. The solution presented by this project was not to minimize the effect of the creek but rather to maximize and exploit it.

In order to do this, operable dams were added at each end in order to maintain an appropri-ate water level. One downhill at the North end keeping water at a visibly attractive height, and one uphill at the South end to prevent fl ash fl ooding during a rainfall.

The exploitation of two distinct sides forced a designated approach to the chapel. Guests will park, walk through the tree canopy, and over the creek as the Chapel form reveals itself in-side the canopy, becoming a visible goal to be reached.

The naturally growing, yet well maintained greenery of the waterwat is symbolic of human nature as one attempts to reach holiness. In contrast, the strictly ordered lanscaping sur-rounding main structures is a symbol of purity and the traditions held dear in Catholocism. One can only reach true holiness and purity, but enduring and rising above human nature in order to reach it.

Monastery

The Chapel and Support Building were designed as a symbol of religion in the lives of a congregation. The design took shape adhering to the premis of rigidity and ideality of form, while also maintaining complete transparency.

The monk residences are designed to be offset from the water line protected by the tree canopy, in order to allow both enjoyment of the natural views, as well as a sense of privacy.

The form of the monk living center is intended to react to the residences as a focal point and gathering space.

Collage Museum

Students were given the challenge to design an International Museum of Collage, Assemblage, and Construction at a sight on Main Street in Norman, OK.

This design is based on the layering of spaces using circulation paths and variations of transparency, a refl ection of the artistic method of collage. Additionally, it was important to maintian and enhance the essence of downtown.
