Jonathan Sdao: An Overview of the Game of
Hockey
Jonathan Sdao has played hockey for several junior
hockey teams. Hockey is a sport that dates back to
1875, when two nine-player teams played the first
organized indoor hockey game at Victoria Skating
Rink in Montreal, Canada.
The game has many different versions. They range
from ice hockey to field hockey. When played
professionally, the game consists of twenty players.
A hockey team consists of two goalies, six defense,
and sixteen forwards. When a game is in play, each
team has five players out and a goalie protecting
their net. Each team member has a specific goal in
mind with the common hope of scoring the biggest
amount of points in the three twenty minute
periods. Forwards are trying to put the puck in the
net while defense are trying to stop that from
happening. Goalies are restricted to an area called a
crease. They are the last line of defense of the goal.
The National Hockey League (NHL) is the largest
league of the sport. It consists of thirty teams from
the United States and Canada. Hockey players from
all over the world try to prove their skills in hopes of
making one of the teams.
An NHL season consists of eighty-two games for each
team. They lead to a grand championship playoff,
which determines the winning team of the series.
The top eight teams from each of the two
conferences play each other in a best of seven game
series. The first place team plays the eighth place
team, the second place team plays the seventh place
team and so on. The winners from each series play
against each other until there are two teams left. The
winning team is then named the Stanley Cup
Champions. The Stanley Cup is the trophy that most
hockey players that Jonathan Sdao met dream
about.
