Come Holy Spirit fill the hearts of your people

The major festivals that mark the end of Eastertide all fall in the first half

of this month Firstly we mark the Ascension of the Lord 40 days after

Easter and then nine days after the Ascension of Jesus and 49 days after

his crucifixion the Jews were doing what they always did this time of

year preparing for the Feast of Ingathering or Harvest It was held 50

days after the Passover and with it life in Israel looked set to return to

normal with Jesus well on the way to becoming just a memory

So no one paid any attention to a small group of Jesusrsquo disciples who had

gathered in a house in Jerusalem There were only about 120 of them

and they were quiet and kept to themselves The Jews if they thought

about it at all would have assumed they were still grieving their lost

leader But the disciples far from grieving Jesusrsquo death were eagerly

awaiting for him to send them a present a promisehellip Though they did

not understand exactly what it might be

All they knew was that Jesus was alive and that before He had ascended

to heaven He had told them to go to Jerusalem and wait there together

for ldquothe promise of the Fatherrdquo (Acts 14) He had said ldquostay here in

the city until you have been clothed with power from on highrdquo (Luke

2449)

These disciples though they did not know it then were already acting as

the future church ndash the ecclesia which literally means lsquocalled-out onesrsquo

For those disciples stuck together together they waited for Godrsquos

blessing

As with them so with us today even though each conversion is intensely

personal we are not converted to be alone in our faith Far from it

We are not saved to solitude but to a life in the fellowship of the

Church Jesus has ordained that His followers TOGETHER be His

family on earth His witness to the world

But it has never been a family built on likeness ndash the believers in the

house that day came from very different backgrounds ndash from right-wing

conservatives (Matthew) to radical left-wing zealots (Simon) There were

some straight-forward fishermen and even women for good measure

3

From the day of its birth Jesusrsquo family would include all kinds of people

who would find their unity in Him

The first thing the disciples did was to get down to the business of

praying They did not try and unite themselves by long discussions with

each other It was the ldquodevoting themselves to prayerrdquo (verse 14) that

brought them together

Today the Christian Church faces the same challenge ndash of making Christ

known We can do ldquobusiness as usualrdquo in our strength and by our

resources But great manifestations of Godrsquos saving healing and

restoring power come only as Godrsquos people ldquostay for the Spiritrdquo and

ldquowait for the promiserdquo as Jesus commanded (Luke 2449 Acts 14)

Each of us would do well to ldquoask seek and knockrdquo for Godrsquos fullness day

by day if we are to enjoy His full anointing of power on our lives and

ministry We all lsquoleakrsquo and need the continual in-filling that comes from

abiding persistent prayer

It was out of the context of prayer that this earliest form of church in

Jerusalem was preparing for the coming of the Holy Spirit on the Day of

Pentecost For Godrsquos fullness in our lives and awakening in our church

today we must believe that He is able and willing to fulfill His highest

purpose for us He wants to give us His ldquogood giftsrdquo namely His Holy

Spirit in fullness

That day in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit arrived in all His fullness

Peter stood up and preached the first ever Christian sermon to the

astonished Jews in the city So - the Jesus their rulers had crucified at

Passover was not dead after all That Jesus WAS the Messiah and He

was alive 3000 were converted that same day In the power of the

Spirit the Church was born ndash and growing fast

We are hoping that we will soon have a pioneer minister in this parish

and the opportunity to lsquoask seek and knockrsquo for Christ can be ours in

new traditional and unknown ways The Holy Spirit may know we just

need to tune in find out and be part of the growth in this part of Godrsquos

Kingdom

I for one canrsquot wait Fr Paul

Parish Priestrsquos jottings for May

Lent Holy Week and Easter

Thank you for our journey together as it was a wonderful prayer filled joy-

ful and thought provoking time From the number of comments that I have

received I believe that a lot of you have felt the same

This would not have happened without the involvement of you all and so for

what everyone did both seen and unseen thank you on behalf of us all The

seasons were well and truly captured nurtured and then released for and

with us all

Ascension Day

This falls on Thursday 5 May and there will be a Sung Mass at 730pm that

evening It is one of the rare occasions when we come together for a major

feast day during the week and so it would be good to see as many of us as

possible gathering to celebrate Christrsquos ascension to heaven to be seated at

the right hand of God To continue the celebrations you are invited to the

Vicarage for a drink after the service

Friday MassParish Lunch

The first Friday of the month is 6 May and so there will be a mass at midday

Roberts Centre Foodbank

Please continue to support the work of the Roberts Centre by placing arti-

cles in the crate at the back of church Non perishable food and other arti-

cles that will help disadvantaged families in our city It is often surprising

things like sugar tinned meat and long life juice that they run short of

Coffee morning

The next coffee morning is on Wednesday 18 May from 1030am A won-

derful opportunity to get together in the warm late spring weather One

day it might be balmy enough for us to have tables outside

Parish walk

I wondered if people would like to join together for our second annual walk

of the parish boundaries on Saturday 14 May starting at 10am at the church

It is the time of year when traditionally parishes have marked their territory

in a variety of ways and so a walk would be ours (with a pub lunch and an

ice cream too)

9th May Pachomius - the patron saint of administrators

Have you ever worked for a disorganised organisation You know the

scene your boss lives in a mild panic your goals and deadlines keep being

changed your colleagues whisper darkly in corners emails contradict each

other meetings lead to more confusion and you go home each night with

a headache

And so it is that Pachomius should be the patron saint of administrators

everywhere For back in the 4th century without a computer or even a

mobile he managed to run eleven separate monasteries like clockwork

Pachomius was born into a pagan family in Upper Egypt at the end of the

third century and as a youth conscripted into the army On his release in

313 he became two things a Christian and a hermit (probably craved

some peace and quiet) But Pachomius was no loner and when other

monks gradually sought him out he did with them what he did best he

organised them By 320 he had founded his first monastery

Pachomius seems to have had exceptional powers of administration no

doubt perfected by his years of disciplined army life By the time of his

death in 346 he presided over nine large monasteries for men and two for

woman Each monastery was divided into houses according to its craft

such as agriculture tailoring or baking

Pachomius knew how to delegate each house had its own leader He

knew how to keep in touch he held team leadersrsquo meetings twice a year

Pachomius knew about supply chains food and drink never ran out Pacho-

mius knew about marketing he found buyers for their produce in Alexan-

dria Pachoimus knew about delivering a vision a daily pattern of work

and prayer and sleep was set in place to make sure that the monks and

nuns could devote themselves to God for hours each day in prayer and in

memorising the Psalms and other Bible passages

Pachomius knew how to help people get things done No wonder his Rule

went on to influence that of Basil and Benedict Certainly administration is

listed by St Paul as a genuine gift of God and prudence and clear forward

planning are highly prized in the Proverbs

24 John and Charles Wesley - evangelists and hymn-writers

John and Charles Wesley were the founders of Methodism Two of nineteen

children born to Samuel and Susannah Wesley of Epworth Rectory in Lin-

colnshire in 1703 and 1707 their father was the local rector while their

mother was a spiritual inspiration to her many children

Both John and Charles went to Christ Church Oxford (1720 and 1726) John

was ordained and Charles and some friends formed a ldquoHoly Clubrdquo while still

at college It consisted of men who dedicated themselves to Bible study pray-

er fasting and good works Such regular disciplines soon earned Charles the

nickname lsquoMethodistrsquo The name stuck

Both Charles and John felt called to the mission field and so in 1735 they

sailed to Georgia Their time among Indians in America was not a success ndash

they struggled for any real spiritual authority in their ministries Feeling fail-

ures they returned to England in some depression John summed it up ldquoI

went to America to convert the Indians but oh who shall convert merdquo

Then the Wesleys made friends with some Moravians They stressed that

salvation cannot be earned but must be received by grace through faith in

Christ Charles was the first to experience this lsquotruersquo conversion when on

Pentecost Sunday 21st May 1738 he wrote that the Spirit of God ldquochased

away the darkness of my unbeliefrdquo

Only three days later on 24th May 1738 it was Johnrsquos turn As he wrote in

his journal ldquoIn the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate

Street where one was reading Lutherrsquos preface to the Epistle to the Romans

About a quarter before nine while he was describing the change which God

works in the heart through faith in Christ I felt my heart strangely warmedrdquo

John and Charles Wesley then devoted the rest of their lives to sharing the

Good News of Jesus Christ ndash and turned England upside-down When the

established Church threw John out he took to the fields preaching to coal

miners and commoners His itinerant evangelism took him 250000 miles on

horseback and to preach over 40000 sermons His small ldquosocietiesrdquo attracted

some 120000 followers by the time of his death

Charles became the most prolific and skilled hymn-writer in English history

writing hymns that are sung widely today such as ldquoLove Divine All Loves

Excellingrdquo In all he wrote nearly 7000 hymns

The legacy of the two brothers lives on As well as Methodism their teaching

has widely impacted the holiness movement the Pentecostal movement and

the charismatic movement

Wordsearch Clues and Answers for May 2016 - Rogation Sunday

The first Sunday in May is Rogation Sunday This is when many parishes still

lsquobeat the boundsrsquo Rogation means an asking of God - for blessing on the

seed and land The practice began with the Romans who processed around

the cornfields each Spring singing and dancing sacrificing animals in order

to get rid of evil About 465 AD the Western world was suffering from

earthquake and storm Mamertius Bishop of Vienne aware of the pagan

custom ordered that prayers should be said in the ruined or neglected

fields Thus lsquobeating the boundsrsquo became a Christian ceremonial It arrived

in England early in the eighth century Each Spring led by the priest a little

party from the parish would set out with a Cross to trace the boundaries of

the parish Theyrsquod implore God to keep their corn and roots and boughs in

13

good health and bring them to harvest In the days when maps were

scarce lsquobeating the boundsrsquo helped remind everyone just where the bounda-

Sherpa Tenzing ndash son of Everest

Tenzing Norgay ndash known best as Sherpa Tenzing ndash died 30 years ago He

and Sir Edmund Hillary were the first people to reach the summit of Mount

Everest

Over nearly 20 years he had been on every expedition that set out to put

a man on top of Everest By 1953 he had probably spent more time on the

mountain than any other human being - and had come within 1000 feet of

its summit Yet he almost missed out The first pair to attempt the summit

in 1953 turned back only 300 feet from the top because of a faulty oxygen

cylinder

Many Buddhists regarded Tenzing a brilliant climber as a reincarnation of

the Buddha For others his significance was simply that he was virtually the

first humbly born Asian in history to attain world recognition Tenzings

original name was Namgyal Wangdi but it was changed by a high lama

ldquoNorgay means fortunaterdquo

At the summit of Everest Tenzing dug a hole in the snow and put food in it

as a gift to the mountain gods Hillary buried a crucifix Tenzing spoke sev-

en languages but never learned to write although he authored several

books by dictating them

Kingdom

The first Sunday in May is Rogation Sunday This is when many parishes still

lsquobeat the boundsrsquo Rogation means an asking of God - for blessing on the

seed and land The practice began with the Romans who processed around

the cornfields each Spring singing and dancing sacrificing animals in order

to get rid of evil About 465 AD the Western world was suffering from

earthquake and storm Mamertius Bishop of Vienne aware of the pagan

custom ordered that prayers should be said in the ruined or neglected

fields Thus lsquobeating the boundsrsquo became a Christian ceremonial It arrived

in England early in the eighth century Each Spring led by the priest a little

party from the parish would set out with a Cross to trace the boundaries of

the parish Theyrsquod implore God to keep their corn and roots and boughs in

good health and bring them to harvest In the days when maps were

Barbershop evangelism

There was a barber who felt he should share his faith with his customers

more So the next morning he decided Today I am going to witness to

the first man that walks through my door

Soon after he opened his shop the first man came in for a shave The bar-

ber sat him down and then fled to the back of the shop to pray God

please give me the wisdom to know just the right thing to say Amen

Then the barber approached the man with his razor knife in hand ldquoRight
