Preface

On behalf of the organizing committee and the international program committee, we are glad to

present this final program and the proceedings of the 5th Conference of the European Federation for

Information Technology in Agriculture, Food and Environment and the 3rd World Congress on

Computers in Agriculture and Natural Resources Joint Meeting (EFITA/WCCA 2005).

Held at the Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD), Vila Real, Portugal on July 25-28,

2005, this Conference is the result of a cooperative effort between the European Federation for IT in

Agriculture, Food and the Environment (EFITA) and national and international organizations with

interest in research and use of information technologies in agriculture, food and the environment. In

2003, the conference venue and organization were agreed during the EFITA General Assembly decision

in Debrecen, Hungary, and through the Memorandum of Understanding for International Cooperation

on the Utilization of IT for Agriculture, Food and the Environment signed by the Asian Federation for

Information Technology in Agriculture (AFITA), the Pan-American Federation for Information

Technology in Agriculture (PanAFITA) and the European Federation for Information Technology in

Agriculture, Food and the Environment (EFITA).

This conference provides a forum for professionals working in the agricultural, environmental and

rural sectors to exchange information on applications and developments in the use of Information

Technologies. The Scientific Program Committee received 301 abstracts from 47 countries. The

Committee selected 179 oral presentations and 40 poster presentations. We would like to express our

gratitude to those who sent works to us. The conference program includes 50 technical sessions and 5

keynote speeches by distinguished experts in their fields.

The congress location, Vila Real, is in the heart of the region of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, which

is characterized by the extraordinary beauty of its landscape and its protected areas. The Douro valley

is also famous for its vineyards that produce the famous Port wines. Please do enjoy both the

conference and the beauty of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro.
