Friends and family of Jules Resnick memorialized his 518 volunteer hours with a welcoming bench.

Sasha Jaffarove, right, led the Young Maker’s Program at the Downtown S.C. Library.

The Live Oak Branch Honors a Lost Friend By Laura Vanderslice

Jules was such a dear man and a highly valued volunteer at the library. His very first assignment was on Jan. 17, 2006,

opening day of the newly renovated Live Oak Branch. Later, in a volunteer profile, he was quoted as saying, “It was pouring rain. About all I did was stand there and point to where the parking spaces were.”

But that day in the rain did not discourage him, and our Branch was fortunate to enjoy this “volunteer extraordinaire.” He filled book requests, took care of our bulletin board postings, shelved CDs and just about anything else we asked him to do.

Sometimes we’d be mixed up about which day he was coming, and I’d turn to my coworker and ask, “Is it a Jules day?” We are fortunate to have had many “Jules Days”. Between March 2012 and March 2017, Jules volunteered 217 times at our Branch!

We are so honored to have this bench at our library in memory of Jules. We miss him and this will be such a wonderful way to celebrate his life and love of the library.

A Young Friend Loves Mentoring at your Library!

“It has always been a passion of mine to be able to mentor and help be a guide for young minds. To

allow them to reach their goals by catering to their unique learning styles while still allowing them to have a passion for learning,” says Sasha, a student from Pacific Collegiate, who mentored in the Young Makers Program at the Downtown Santa Cruz Branch.

“The Santa Cruz Library helped making this dream into a reality (by) providing the necessary resources for this project.” She added.

And Friends made this program possible by keeping it supplied with materials such as batteries, motors, LED lights, arts and craft supplies.

“I’m glad that this program puts smiles on the faces of young brilliant minds as they each struggle through different problems and thought processes,” says Sasha.

Sasha graduates this year and is moving on: “I hope to acquire a PhD, so I can do research projects I feel that would be quite fun.”

Meanwhile the Young Makers Program will continue while supplies last! Consider a donation today to your Friends.

Denise Ward Creates a Shared Experience at the Aptos Branch

Denise had an idea for creating community! The Aptos Branch should sponsor an Our Community Reads program. What

better way for individuals to share an experience but by reading the same book? And not only did Denise present the idea to her branch’s Friends, but she offered to chair the committee.

For 10 months, she pulled the committee together, organized the book selection process, planned events, made community con-nections, found partners—and made a huge impact on the Friends and the Aptos community.

Born a Crime, by Trevor Noah, was the selected book. Approximately 500 participants took part in 14 separate events, including a film and speaker’s series, a Trivia Night, a poetry slam, book discussion groups and art exhibits. We discussed themes such as being different, racism, bullying, and poverty… And we had a lot of fun!

Your Friends in Aptos will sponsor this program again next year, under Denise's leadership. We couldn’t do it without her!

If you would like to create a program for your library, contact your [email protected].

Denise's hard work and leadership skills were apparent at every 'Community Reads' event.
