Oral Surgery for the General Dentist
This course will review the diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient selection for basic outpatient oral surgical procedures for the general dentist. Surgical techniques for exodontia, prosthetic surgery, biopsies and frenectomies will be discussed. It will review the assessment and management of the medically compromised patient in the office, perioperative management of the surgical patient, surgical exactions, and the importance of management of third molars and other impacted teeth. The evaluation of the edentulous alveolar ridge for implant dentistry, socket bone grafting and the basics of implant dentistry will be also be discussed. Learning objectives: Understand the importance of pre and perioperative management of the surgical patient
Understand the principles of simple and surgical extractions
Examine basic surgical pre-prosthetic procedures including tori removal and frenectomies Understand the importance of management of impacted third molars
Evaluate the edentulous alveolar ridge for bone grafting for implant dentistry Understand the basics of implant dentistry
Understand how to manage post-operative complications
Dr. Maria B. Papageorge is a tenured Professor and Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery. She is also Associate Dean for Hospital Affairs and Chair of the Department of Dentistry at Tufts Medical Center. She has been on the faculty in the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery since 1986.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College, and her DMD degree and MS degree from Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. She completed her Advanced Education Training in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and a fellowship in Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery from Tufts and Tufts Medical Center.
Dr. Papageorge is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, Fellow of the American Association
of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and the Academy of Dental Sciences. Her extensive research and clinical interests include cancer, maxillofacial reconstruction, orthognathic surgery, and implant surgery.
